    I was reading a book about the eruptions in Iceland and how they and other volcanoes influenced the climate ("An Island on Fire"). The book also mention that the year 1816 was beset by unseasonable weather due to the eruption of Mount Tambora. The wiki page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer

    This looks to be a good introduction to this and its subsequent historical effects, for instance the sunsets that influenced Turner

    Just to put the year into context, 1816 was the year after the Battle of Waterloo. Interesting fact about the Turner sunsets too...

    Looking at the temperature chart, it would seem that Ireland and Scotland escaped the worst, while France and much of what we now call Germany were the coldest.

    Hm, it's a strange chart in a way though, it's the difference between the average temp for that summer and the 1970-2000 average temperature (a time of increasing temperatures) .. showing the 1815 chart and maybe a few more from that time would help to really see how bad it was
