Sorry but I did mention we have been through all this.

Himself was talked through all this stuff by the main mechanic on the phone and it didn't fix anything... I was willing to pay for anyone to fix the car and all I get is the same thing, Haynes manuel, look up videos.... Im not a mechanic, his not a mechanic, I just don't understand Im like here I will pay you to come fix the car and its like wow there horse no don't do that, lets talk...

Sorry I am not being smart tis just like saying stuff like this when we have already tried it and again if it was that easy to get someone to fix it in Cork would ya not think I would have got one...And no, not really, you knowing beetles and telling me about it is like me reading you a bedtime storey..

So we have established that you want someone to fix it, and you dont want a walk through on the phone to fix it. Fair enough.

So lets cut to the chase and find out exactly the condition of this car now.

In post 12 you say something on the car cracked, and there is oil all over the place. Can you elaborate on this at all. Has additional damage been done since the non starting issue.

    1. Does the ignition light come on when the key is in the ignition.
    2. Does the car try to crank when the key is turned to engage the starter.
3.. Does it try to start, any firing or backfiring at all.
    4. Any heavy clanking/banging when trying to start.

    5. Has the NEWEST mechanic any news for you.
    6. Is the newest mechanic familiar with classic beetle engines.

have a look at this previous post,
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=59052107

there are a few names and numbers on it, none in cork, BUT they may be able to give you the name of someone in Cork.

Unfortunately after so many involved already, other mechanics may be reluctant
to get involved, as they dont know what mischief has taken place before them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,646 ✭✭✭Milly33

Im just not talking about it anymore it is too hard.. That's just an excuse, the only mischief was what the mechanic told us to do over the phone. Rather than getting his ass down to look at her... needless to say his so in the black books too

You have people here that want to help you. At least 6+ beetle mechanics are following this thread.

When you,ve stopped throwing the hissy fit, let us know. And we,ll get the bug
    on the road.

It isn't a hissy fit it is saying how it is.... Everyone wants to help but I am not listen to advice down the phone or to you tube videos. As mentioned she is with a mechanic now so hopefully he will fix. It he is good I will be sure to let all know if he is..

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 5,094 Mod ✭✭✭✭kadman

    Well Huston....do we have ignition;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,646 ✭✭✭Milly33

Nope the comoputer says no.. Spoke the mechanics yesterday so they arent really used to working on wagens but he is trying his best. They have been busy this week so he has said he will give her full attention next week. Said he got her started one morning and a crap load of black smoke came out of it.. He is going to strip down the carburator and take it from there

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 5,094 Mod ✭✭✭✭kadman

If he got it started, and black smoke came out of the exhaust, too early for a carb strip down,
at this stage. Better to tweak the carb for a running idle. Seeing as it was running before.

Carb rebuild kits for these cars are readily available, cheap. And easily fitted, if they are
    stock carbs.

Strip downs at this stage, sounds like money. I hope I,m wrong. If they are not used to
vw,s, they might end up on a fishing trip. If you need any pointers, get them to ask here.

I think you should call down and have a chat with them.

If you are offering to cover my travelling costs, and day, I,ll consider it.

Or move your car more northwards.

Must pop over in a bit, I was out sick yesterday so back today.. Word on the street is that there is a mention of the Compression on one side of the engine? There was a mention of the engine not being in good shape which cant be right..

Fecking fed up now to be honest. Very disappointed in Mr man I shall not name the mechanic I had, as if he had fecking just worked on her she would be up and running by now none of this crap going on.. So so pissed off with him

Sounds like you are going through the mill on this one..

Can you tell me if they have the car started and running on its own??

Ask them for the compression readings they have taken so far

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 5,094 Mod ✭✭✭✭kadman

So is it fair to say at this stage,

that you have had quite a number of mechanics looking at this engine, and to date,

none of them have told you whats wrong, and what you need to do to fix it, and what its likely to cost you.

And if thats the case, you need vw experts to look at this now for you, not regular mechanics.

Yep well that would have been what I wanted from the start but my own VW specialist mechanic let me down and what am I to do then. Really heartbreaking stuff, I am gutted that he let me down as I trusted him. Pondering now is it time to park her up and get the full works done but again need to find someone trust worthy to do the work

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,172 ✭✭✭✭jimgoose

Most mechanics these days couldn't be bothered their hole doing proper component-level debug and you would do well to listen to someone like Kadman, who knows old aircooled VWs backwards and sorts them out simply because he loves them. Now - was it by any chance nearly out of petrol way back when it was filled up? There is a low-pressure fuel line going from the tank out front all the way to the carburettor on the engine, and they are notorious for getting blocked, especially now that all the old aircoolers are so old.

But to be honest I am more worried at this point about this "cracking" and oil everywhere malarkey. Can you tell us more about that?

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 5,094 Mod ✭✭✭✭kadman

I,d like to know all about that cracking mallarkey as well,

And you,ve been asked about it before. So fess up please. I
just want to know exactly what damage has been done.

So if you answer some of the questions asked, it,ll help
others to see if they can offer a solution. Like I,ve said before.

Has any of the mechanics offered a reason for your breakdown,
or a solution to fix it. And did your " Vw specialist" offer his
    reason .

Will you be leaving it in the present garage, for their offer of a
    fix.

I get ye are trying to help me I will answer the questions the best I can below.

But what I need is someone who knows what they are doing to come and fix the car as in physically come down and fit it...

I am not being mean here, but can you imagine the mechanics faces when I go in and tell them what to do when I myself have no notion what to do.I can give them pointers that I have got from here but that is it... If they don't listen I am in no position to tell them how to do their jobs as I cant do their job...

Right so the cracking, not sure what happened here himself was out working on it and came in saying that he had to stop as he thinks a pipe cracked and there was oil spilling out underneath.

Regarding the storey, twas ok so she is driving fine then,

I go fill her up (she wasn't low low on petrol I know better than to do this) and the min I take off I know something is wrong.
She stops flat just as I pull into the car park for home.

No. 1 person comes to take a look and they say (this is my dad) it must be the fuel pump. So I go and ring the mechanic telling him what happens and he agrees that the fuel pump makes sense. Pay for new pump and have it sent down to me.

New pump is fitting and she's still not going, in between the battery goes dead so I have to get a new battery. (an auto electrician got involved with this too and could not figure it out)

Back onto Mechanic asking what to do or what does he think. I do say at this point, I think it might be better if he could just fixt the car. He keeps saying no no sure tis simple to fix blah blah there is only so much can be wrong..And that he should be able to talk to himself over the phone to sort the problem.

From there himself took off those screws (sorry again im not a mechanic don't know what they are called) in the engine by the fuel line. Cleans them up, puts them back on nething.. Get some petrol from the line into the carburettor is it? To kick start her and she will go but die again..

Mechanic still insist tis an easy fix and wanted himself to strip the carburettor, which he wasn't comfortable doing as we don't have the space to do this. Tis pissing rain most evenings and we are in the back of a carpark and he doesn't know that much about them..
Mechanic keeps it up at this stage again I tell him I don't care I will pay for the towing up to him €400 and he keeps saying no no that's silly if there is no need. Im like take the money.

Himself took one last go at it the last time and then this crack happened and he said he is lost with it, cant figure it out.

Im fed up with said mechanic at this stage well beyond pissed off, like I love my wagen and he will bring me to tears for not just coming to pcik her up. Like I will cry and my heat is a black boulder...

So had no other choice but to try mechanics next door to me. Tired to call the place on Marybourogh hill and go no answer from them..
Asked another chap in Ballinlough he said to google it which was so helpful.

So I was out sick yesterday and must pop in there now to see the update today with them next door but this is what they mentioned, to lets say the chap I know who owns the place who was in there. Ill know more defo after work when I get the chance to go in..

Just rang the main mechanic again just to ask him what would he think if it was compression and he can tell im pissed off at this stage and said sure maybe tis time I get her up a little too late now for me, as I don't like crap like this..

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. Puts things into perspective.

    By the description
Get some petrol from the line into the carburettor is it? To kick start her and she will go but die again.
from you. It appears that my original diagnosis on fuel supply might
appear to be correct. Again mentioned by another poster recently.

    So question is now,

    Where is the car now.
Do you intend to remove it from the existing garage.
If you did, where would it be in order to examine it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,646 ✭✭✭Milly33

Hello yes that would be it what you said ( :) ) about kick starting her.

Yep everything points towards the fuel but no ones seems to be able to figure it out..

She is next door to me in work. In fairness they went up and towed her down here, so they are trying just they have been busy so she is top priority.. I am going to call in there when I finish for an update. I have put down what ye have said on a piece of paper and I hope he doesn't feel like I am being smarts by showing him this.

If they cant fix it, im back to her sitting in the car park until I find a mechanic who can.

Or even at this stage from seeing how badly she looks after two months in the rain and they way people have left her im half thinking is it either time to get her fully re-done, or the unmentionable....

So if someone came to look at it, it would be in a carpark.

Is the engine complete at this stage, has the last mechanic that was at it.
Taken any item off, had a go at fixing it.

And how far from Tullamore in Offaly is this car now located.

    Thanks

I think a few good pictures of the engine bay may also help anyone who has plans to look at it.

Can't understand how so many have failed to get it going.
