I bought a 2008 BMW X5 last year from Sarsfields motors.
Car checked out fine when I went to look at it, got an ok trade in for our Lexus and was happy out.
The car was freshly valeted and running away in the parking lot out back for me to inspect.

The following morning at home I spotted the rear passenger side was sitting way down. Ended up being a slow leak in the rear airbag, which cost over €700 to replace. This would be very evident sitting idle overnight in a forecourt, but they cleverly covered it by running the car and getting the compressor to bring it up to level. Didn't get any joy when I rang to complain. Only engine and gearbox came with 3 months warranty.

Also, I realised on the way home from buying the X5 that I left my Rayban sunglasses in the Lexus, they actually rang to say the same and said they would post them down. No sign of them after a week or two, so rang them. The salesman who I was dealing with and contacted me, said they were on his desk and would send them the next day. A few weeks later, no sign, rang again and he said they could not find them. After many, many phone calls over a few months I just gave up. Even sent one of the people I know in dublin to collect. I think they just decided to keep them.

I would not buy another car or deal with them again.
    says enough about them

always surprised that Sarsfield claim all their cars have FSH , no matter how old the car is - some very high mileage cars. They seem to sell a lot of cars but have heard nothing but bad things about them.

I mentioned the timing chain failure in my post so thanks for double posting and I told him to avoid that particular engine. It's a big blight on them to have that engine problem but I didn't exactly ignore the issue.

In that case Im not sure what you mean by it being a "fine car" despite the fact its clearly not?

Not directing this at you but it just sounds like a typical, generic, pub talk statement from somebody who hadnt a clue about cars

So if I seen a private bmw for sale a bmw main dealer would carry out inspection for 200? That's probably worth it in long run , thanks
they may do, I would way prefer to get it done with a specialist though, god knows what apprentice bmw might use and given that its a several year old car, they will probably tell you to replace everything, bring it to chelmsford motors ranelagh, Valdas from valdas motorconfidence or Bloomfield motors off the S.C.R

Op how often do you do your long run and what is the roundtrip km?

Yea I'm kind of worried about how easy that might be to do... Lotsa dodgy places over service history....

Would u or anyone on this site have experience of the 523i m sport petrols?

I do 65km each day, I'd only bring it once or twice a week at most though... Well I say that now ha ha

    I know of a 2007 520d MSport for sale.
Blue with half black leather (standard seats). Factory 19" 172M (spyder Wheels), sunroof and mud flaps. 116k miles on clock with full documented service history (BMW and motor confidence in Dublin).

Excellent a condition and kept immaculate. Consistent runs to the country with work so not all city mileage and hers the best thing, it's and LCI car cosmetically from the factory but it has the older 163bhp nine so no timing chain issues. Breather filter changed regularly so no clogging and swirl flaps removed.

Asking 11k based on condition and history.

Only selling as he bought an F10 today.
Genuine seller, has an 04 E46 couple with not 40k miles on it, in the family since bought new in Joe Duffy BMW so genuinely genuine ;)

I am not an expert on these or any cars but timing chain issues aside, which is a massive embarrassment to any manufacturer let alone a premium brand, the 520d is a great car to drive and be in, even with the 4 cylinder engine. Sure, it's not as good as the petrol 6 cylinder (which I have by the way) or the bigger diesels it is more powerful than 90% of cars on the road, as fuel efficient as many much smaller cars and I drove one a couple of times and I would say apart from absolutely caning both cars, there would be no noticeable difference in performance between it and my 525i. Power delivery is different due to petrol v diesel of course, but despite being a petrol only owner all my life, I like the diesel power delivery. If you go at the lower end of your search OP you will get an 06 with the 163 bhp engine which was not the infamous, I will go as far as calling it disgraceful, 177 bhp engine. Loads and loads of change out of your budget, you could easily but 2 for your budget. If you are buying any later than that go for a 6 cylinder petrol or diesel. They tend to be a bit cheaper than the 520d so total ownership might be the same or even less depending on your circumstances like mileage and driving style. Personally the one I would go for is a 525i or 530i. Euro is coming back against the GBP, it might be possible to look at UK cars again soon. Post 08 petrols not expensive to tax so would be a good buy, that's where I am going next.

    Not on Donedeal yet.
Deffo in the high side but I guess you get what you pay for. It would be one of the cleanest straightest cars for the year.

There are cheaper ones on Donedeal but manual and not as clean

He'd have a 07 530d taxed for 2 years, 2 years warranty and enough left to cover his insurance for €11,500.
Can't see a 07 520 making that kind of money.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,852 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

op in your situation I would probably go for an 06 or 07 2.5 petrol... you get a far nicer engine and more expensive car new than the 520d. If you wife is only doing short runs, the diesel doesnt really benefit as it takes diesel engines longer to heat up and a 65km round trip is nothing...

Possibly, we will see how he advertises it I suppose.
where would he get 2 years warranty? BMW AUC will not sell an 07 car, even if its an LCI one at this stage.
Lowest 2007 530d Sport on donedeal now is €10,250 and its a pre LCI version with 290k km on it.

Although there is a nice LCI 530d for €10,950 with small dealer warranty.

Read earlier in the thread, you can buy the warranty yourself that a lot of garages resell as their own.
Also know a chap who bought an F10 530d this week that needs to sell his 07 LCI 530d ; )

That's like a Mapfre one. Can cost €450+ but not worth a lot with a list of exclusions the length of your arm. With BMW warranties, you have to be in warrantly to extend it. Our quote for the E60 520d with 21k miles on it was €790.

Nice, any reason why he didn't go for the 535d? After owning both, the 35d is noticeably better imo of course.

They must've seriously increased their warranty prices. I covered an E92 M3 for less than that price a few years ago. When I sold the car they even refunded the premium to me :)

We didn't take it tbh. Left the quote in with the service history so it's floating about out there with the current owner, malahide/howth area I believe.

Sold it that year (2013) for a new F10. That's under warranty until this summer so it will be interesting to see how much it will cost to extend the warranty on this one.

Advertised on Donedeal for €11,300 and sold in a week for €10,850. Do I wasn't too far off. Guy who bought it said he looked at 12 cars and all rubbish!

Good going, 530 is still there, tax seems to frighten everyone even when it's taxed for the year. : (

Considering the OP started the thread 9 months ago, I think they may be sorted.
Either way, have you got a donedeal link?

    Hi,
I am thinking about buying a 2012 BMW 520d M Sport Estate from UK. Any advise/comments?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,852 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

have you done the maths to see the potential savings and if it indeed worthwhile importing?

Apologies, it's a UK car but dealer is paying the vrt. It Costs about 24k with 100k miles on it.

Is the timing belt an issue on 2012's?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,852 ✭✭✭✭Idbatterim

so a bmw dealer is importing it for you?

Bought a 2013 520d se auto touring with a good few extras for €27k last July. 80,000km. €24k is too much for a 2012 with that mileage. What sort of warranty are you getting?

  • Registered Users Posts: 51,224 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

A BMW dealer wouldn't retail a car with 100k miles on it as the mileage is too high to qualify for their approved used BMW warranty.

Just a 3 month warranty. It's being sold by a used car dealer not an authorised BMW dealer.

From my research 23k - 25k seems standard enough for 2012 520d. But I could be mistaken?

I'm thinking that I'll get an independent assessor to look at it for me. Does anyone know if that's worthwhile?

Also any advise on timing chain? Obviously a concern.
