Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi.

In 1993, both arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday were in both the FA Cup and League Cup Finals. Does anyone know if this ever happened before or since?

Not the same season but Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the 97 FA Cup final and the 98 League Cup final.

Not exactly the same, but in 1971-72, Cork Hibs played Waterford in the last game of the season for the title (so, a league "final") and the same teams played a week later in the FAI Cup final.

Waterford won the league 3-2, having been 2-0 down with ten minutes left. Hibs won the Cup 3-0.

Hi Paz-CCFC. I would not count the league but you brought up another topic. Any case of the same 2 teams playing each other in the FAI Cup final and LOI League Cup Final in the same season?

1996-97 Middlesbrough reached the FA Cup final and the League Cup final. Defeated in both.
    Also relegated the same season.

Don't get me started on the points reduction.

The FA Cup started in 1871/1872 whereas the League cup only appeared in 1961

1992-93 is the only year that both finalists in both cups were the same, Arsenal v Sheffield Wednesday

Spurs were in both in 1981–82
United were in both in 1982–83, 1993-94, 2006–07
Everton were in both in 1983–84
Middlesbrough were in both in 1996–97
Liverpool were in both in 2000–01, 2011–12

So in 55 years there are 10 occurrences of a single team appearing in both finals, 1 every 5.5 years but it's only happened once in 55 years that both teams were in both finals.

This occurrence also happened once in the LOI.

In the 1986/87 season, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers were in the finals of both the FAI Cup and League Cup.

Very good spot, Worztron. I went through the list myself, but was caught out by the results being reversed.

Also, in 2013, Shamrock Rovers played Drogheda United in both the League Cup and Setanta Sports Cup finals. Rovers won both in Tallaght. Drogheda also competed in that season's FAI Cup Final, losing to (Sligo) Rovers. Some blow to lose three cup finals in one season!

I remember watching these games as a kid with Wednesday getting beaten in both. After the FA Cup game one of the reporters was outside the ground as the crowds filed out of Wembley. I'm not sure why it stuck in my memory but a Sheffield Wednesday supporter shouted into the camera, as he walked past, "We'll be back". 23 years on and they still haven't been.

Just to add some more detail - Spurs won one (FA Cup), Man Utd won one in 82/83 (FA Cup) and 06/07 (League Cup), Everton won one (FA Cup), Boro lost both in 96/97, Liverpool won both in 01/02 (after penos in the League Cup), won one in 11/12 (League Cup)

It was Stephen Morrow that Adams dropped. Morrow broke his arm and was out for the rest of the season, including missing the FA Cup final. Morrow was actually carted off to hospital before the medals were presented and he only received his before the FA Cup final.
