I know nothing about the politics but who are those responsible for Drogheda kept being overlooked despite being the largest town in Louth?

It is geared towards Gateway towns as part of the National Spatial Strategy. Dundalk is a Gateway town while Drogheda is not. Dundalk is also the county town.

Drogheda is a commuter town, a suburb in the Great Dublin like Swords.

Resources are being targeted towards towns that can be regional employment hubs and be a focus for investment from multinationals.

Only the "chip on the shoulder" types in Drogheda can't see this.

Drogheda has excellent public transport links, so there is little to stop Droghedians from hopping on a bus or train and enjoying the renovation money. In particular, there are frequent train services to Dublin from Drogheda, while train services from Dundalk are much more limited. So makes sense to spend a bit more on Dundalk as we do not have such easy access to the capital.

What? It has nothing to do with proximity to, or ease of access to, Dublin. It's funding towards Gateway status towns countrywide, as part of the National Spatial Strategy Plan. As already explained.

Drogheda is beyond help. Cutting losses and investing in Dundalk is the wise choice.

Are you really that unaware of the National Spacial Strategy Plan? You need to read up on the concept so.

Gateway towns act a a regional hub to surrounding rural areas.

Therefore, Dundalk is considered a gateway destination for employment purposes to the people of Louth, Monaghan, Cavan, and north & east Meath.

It is an interested document if you want to educate yourself.

In fairness Dundalk needs all the help it can get. It has the college, the new innovation campus and a whole host of other resources that drogheda relies on Dublin for.

Drogheda is just a satellite town of Dublin. Its a place for people who work elsewhere to live. Sad fact but it gets truer every year as the heart of the town dies.
You can see it by the closure of usual town services, like shopping, food, cinema etc, purely as there's better facilities 20 mins up the road in Swords and the city centre.

Why drive 15 mins to Scotch hall or the Laurences centre and negotiate the disaster of the towns traffic system when you have the Pavilions 20 mins away just off the motorway?

...and how did Dundalk get Gateway status? Nothing to do with Dermot Ahern holding high cabinet position.

Drogheda really could've done with some of that money for refurb... :(

Read the plan. Location, location, location. Plus Third Level College, plus industry/business background.....

Fair enough, let's make Drogheda county Dublin so if they are so smart. :)
it's near Dublin when it suits some but far when it doesn't and that's the truth, in fact the location of this town is a curse.

And there will always be better facilities in Swords if people continue to ignore what's in the town. It's a crazy situation that you have a town less than 30 minutes from an International airport and yet do not have many multi-nationals in the town. I think Drogheda has been poorly served by the IDA. They should be looking at attracting one of the big pharma companies to Drogheda. Just look at the investment BSM and Alexion are making in West Dublin at the moment. That sort of investment would dramatically transform Drogheda.

Drogheda became a commuter town, but via Dublin Airport, I regularly meet people on flights from Brussels and Amsterdam from the general Drogheda area who are away for 2 weeks at a time then home for the weekend. A case in point is where I work I met another guy who lives less than 500m from where I was living in Drogheda.
