The damp in there after so long derelict would make it expensive to fix up.

Can't imagine much of the sellable materials are still inside it like pipe work.

Did they get planning permission in the end for the large extension. They built bigger than they were allowed at the time and that is why it never opened.

Who owns it ? NAMA ?

Eventually, however it was never going to open as a hotel at that stage. Was it not a rebuild after a fire rather than an extension?

Someone applied to turn it in to a nursing home but I believe that's dead too.

Tougher went in to NAMA and they appointed receivers left right and centre so I'd imagine they own it. Petrol forecourt business was sold off sharpish to a Top franchiser

I've heard from locals that the nursing home idea is running again. Probably just gossip.

It was a rebuild after the fire. I was a being a smart ass. The old place was leveled and they got permission for a bigger place but they went way over the allowed square feet in planning permission. All that was before the economy finally burst.

Hotel was built way way way bigger that planning was provided for, but retention was granted in 2009.

Not much news about it since. So no knowledge of who owns it. - It wouldn't surprise me is Tommy Tougher regained control of it at a knockdown price as it was very much a pet project of his.

Blockstar, a nursing home operator sought to change 2 of the bedroom blocks to a nursing home, but all other aspects of the hotel planning would have remained which would mean about 80 bedrooms, massive conference/function centre of almost 100,000 sq ft, fitness centre with pool and 800 parking spaces.

Nothing showing on job sites, so opening isn't imminent. Probably a full fitout is required.

I heard that it was going to be turned into a rehabilitation centre for people with injuries, heard that a Limerick man had bought it and that they are working on it at the moment.

Blockstar are the company from limerick, but planning for nursing home / respite care was rejected.
There was intention to open the hotel in 2012 and recruitment started and wedding brochures printed, so my guess is that with the hotel / conference / events market booming, it will open as a hotel as originally planned.

I love the "friend of a friend, who knows" type comments.

You usually find them in the daily mail and are almost always unfounded.

    From the horses mouth.

Tommy Tougher has simply organised a clean up of the site on behalf of the owners, Blockstar after Kildare CC informed them that the site as it stood was considerably littered.

That's it - nothing more than a spring clean of the outside to keep the council happy.

The overall plans remain as a hotel and either a nursing home or recuperation facility combined with the hotel, but nothing will happen on this front in the short term.

Strange that he would organise it on behalf of the owners? Is he one of the owners then ??????

not that I'm aware, but he does - or a family member does - own the Toughers Bar and restaurant next door.

Wouldn't be unusual. Council want it cleaned up, owners contact TT and ask for it to be done. TT sends them the bill.

Other news - The new owners of the industrial park plan to re-build the entrance road with work starting in a couple of weeks. Proper job being done and road will be closed off for a few days.

During closure people will divert down the old road at the fuel station entrance - past kellihers electrical and the tyre place, turn right at the tyre place and then left to re-join the road next to the NCT centre.

That road surface was terrible when I had to go to the fastway depot about 4 years ago...

No harm, road surface is terrible there. some massive potholes, could do some serious damage going to or from your NCT if you're not careful.

Got email to our warehouse today.

Works on new road surface commencing immediately.

    Measurements being taken this week.
    Going to tender next week.
Road to be built to take up to 1000 hgv movements per day.

Works will be completed before end of April.

Also works are being carried out at rear of hotel site with extension for new stairwell built on one of the blocks due to change to nursing home.

    New planning applied for.

162 bed nursing home + specialist care centre. ( recovery from operations that don't need acute hospital care aka mount carmel in Dublin)

Ditching entertainment/music venue in favour of film studio - being beside a music venue was one of reasons for nursing home refusal last time.

Better entrance for nursing home, substantially more landscaping too.

Lets hope it gets permission and comes back to life. Hotel would still be there. But only about 80 rooms.

I heading to punchestown next week and sort of thought that this hotel would be open, but seems it's still closed.

Any one know why such a large hotel is still closed?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

I think You will find the answers above. From what I know, never reopened due to not having planning permission for the extension that was built. Cannot imagine after being idle for so long the interior is in a good condition.

It was impossible to find any accommodation next week in Naas or Newbridge, but just got a room in Silken Thomas which I believe is great location and probably better in a way. (Wife will enjoy the outlet shopping)

But pity such a huge building lies idle. Surely it could be used for Ukrainians whilst they settle here

Not without a multimillion euro investment. At the very least I'd imagine its infested with vermin. To say nothing of multiple winters without heat
