Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Suggestions on MacBook Pro 2nd HD

    Hi folks,

I'm planning on replacing the disc drive on my 2010 17" MacBoon Pro with a second hard drive; I do a lot of audio/video work so would really be a boost to have a system and work drive within the one MacBook.

I've seen the MCE Tech 'OptiBay' enclosure that will allow the second drive install, but it's pretty pricey with shipping from the US and I'm wondering what the advantage is of it over some of the more generic enclosures?

Would be great to hear from anyone that has done this upgrade and could possibly recommend alternatives.

    Thanks! :)

Can't see what benefit you'd get for a premium enclosure over a more generic one. Buy a 256GB ssd, and a 1TB 2.5" Hdd. And you have yourself a sweet setup.

    Thanks for the reply Alan.

The impression the 'OptiBay' page gives is that there is overall better integration or compatibility. Of course, they'd naturally try and make that out to be the case to sell more units.

I don't know about better integration? Surely it'll just appear in Mac OSX as another drive regardless of the caddy you use? I wouldn't buy into that.

Do you have any links to the alternatives?

Another thought, the machine is 6 years old, good going for any laptop. With an SSD and this extra disk you'd probably hope for another 2 years? If even... I reckon there's something to be said with going for the cheaper option if the machine won't be expected to last 2+ years.

I mean it'd be great to get way longer out of you mac, but I reckon 2 years is a reasonable expectation.

Yes, it's been my faithful workhorse! A year or two more is exactly what I'm hoping to get out of it. RAM is maxed and I've got an SSD in as the primary drive at the moment. I'm adding the second HD as I'm doing audio for video work, and I'll have better performance if I have the system/audio/video data all running off separate drives (primary/secondary/external respectively).

Haven't reached the 25 posts threshold so can't post links unfortunately. Alternatives I've seen on Ebay seem to be mostly Shenzen sourced/manufactures. The 'look' right though and claim to fit my MBP model.
