    US troop charter
No expertise here, but wondering why would they fly such an unusual course?

    What's unusual about it?

I thought they flew straight-line great circle routes for efficiency, that’s all.

They more or less did but the oceanic track portion (to 15w) must be rigidly followed until the domestic (Shannon) ATC boundary is reached.

Just wondered, looking at all the movements on Flight Radar, if Dublin and Cork are the only airports that do not operate on Christmas Day?

    There must be others surely.

Kerry, Knock, Aldergrove, Belfast City, to name a few.

For the post part it seems to be an exclusively Irish thing, but don't you dare suggest that it's an anachronism – you'll get people jumping on you for begrudging staff their hard earned day off :)

I develop Superior Solitaire when I'm not procrastinating on boards.ie.

Yup, Dublin and Cork fully closed today with Shannon open basically as an emergency runway.

There seem to be more flights going out of Heathrow today than last year though.

Dublin open for emergencies today too, APFS staff all on duty plus DAA search unit staff and tower controllers

Compared to an average Friday or Sunday can anyone guess or know how many more flights there were today out from Dublin?

No idea about today but average Friday is over 600 with Saturdays probably 450ish. Normally a Wednesday in winter would be 500-600. A busy summers day is 820.

I am not sure why you think there would be more movements? If anything I would say there were fewer flights - for a start none of the foreign short haul airlines that usually base aircraft overnight here had aircraft on station here over Christmas.

Aside from that it’s just a normal day’s operations at the airport.

Anybody know why the Dublin to Philadelphia flight seems to have taken up a holding circuit off the west coast? Are they turning back? A321Neo EI-LRB

Just about to land in Dublin. Rescue 1 standing by.

Not sure what the problem is.

Going to be a heavy landing with hot brakes. Pilot said he would be rolling to the end.

    Edit: Landed safely

Update: It turned back and is landing in Dublin , a lot of holding going on while it lands.

    Down now

EI115 appears to be back on its way, still operated by EI-LRB so issue must have been easily fixed. Better to be delayed an hour or two than suffering a messy cancellation.

Panpan aircraft on approach to Dublin (listening on LiveATC but haven't heard which one yet). Some air space being made for the aircraft.

Edit: looks like a Cessna Citation Mustang C510 coming in. Not hearing anything from them on ATC.

One engine out....callsign *FPH - didn't get all of it.

A Ryanair from Oslo to Stansted is squawking the 77's on approach and seems to have done a few circuits before lining up for the final approach

Edit all other approaches seem to be holding

Anyone managed to find the Tokyo - Istanbul flight that Carlos Ghon used?? There was a post on French twitter with the Istanbul- Beiruit bit, switched off about 1hr before landing. Probably not the same a/c as the Tokyo sector.

Suggested online that TC-TSR flying Osaka-Istanbul may have been the flight.

British Airways says three people who died in a car crash in Stanwell near Heathrow last night were off-duty cabin crew who worked for the airline. RIP

Interesting tracks for the DC10 N17085 being used to combat the wildfires in Australia.

No sign yet of the Global Supertanker 747 yet but maybe the DC10's are doing a good enough job.

    Very interesting planes.

Only one DC-10 operating from Richmond but maybe there is another one elsewhere? https://flightaware.com/live/airport/YSRI
There are a couple of 737-300s and an RJ-85 as well.
