Yes, normal to have a lot of helicopter traffic out there. Not sure if it was further up this thread or elsewhere, but I saw someone saying recently that FR24 coverage in that area had been improved, which might explain if you're not used to seeing them there.

Yea I've not seen so many before up there..

Also see that EI9019 is approaching the coast of Scotland now on the way back to Dublin from China with the PPE supplies...

I'm curious! How would these be a threat to our security and under sea cables?

This aircraft type is there to communicate directly to Russian submarines which are operating in the area. There is speculation that Russia are looking to probe the ability to hack and/or disrupt subsea cables off the Irish coast.

    and
    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/russian-agents-plunge-to-new-ocean-depths-in-ireland-to-crack-transatlantic-cables-fnqsmgncz
Ireland is the landing point for undersea cables which carry internet traffic between America, Britain and Europe. The cables enable millions of people to communicate and allow financial transactions to take place seamlessly.

Garda and military sources believe the agents were sent by the GRU, the military intelligence branch of the Russian armed forces which was blamed for the nerve agent attack in Britain on Sergei Skripal, a former Russian intelligence officer.

The article is not of great quality , they don't even have basic information correct. I would think the aircraft id there to test response times and project a bit of power. can you tell me how you know the aircraft is there to communicate with subs, is it not a bit of a give away as subs are supposed to be operating in secrecy?

Just saw EI - GEY on short finals 24 SNN ..... don't see many 330's around here .....

And to extend the analogy, hang around the doorway and hassle the customers who are trying to legitimately get in and out...

The proper analogy is that they are casing the joint. Which is less of an analogy and more like exactly what they're doing.

He knows because that is what the Russians have said themselves they are doing. The aircraft will have multiple missions within the mission. It’s main mission will be to test comms with their Sub fleet, while simultaneously testing air defences and likely snooping UK mil comms and and hoovering up radar data.

Would the safety of transatlantic flights be jeopardised? Does it force transatlantic flights to alter course etc?

    Potentially, and yes.

Aircraft-to-subsea comms used to require the trailing of an extremely long VLF antenna behind the aircraft. Among specialist types so equipped have been certain USAF EC-135s, US Navy EC-130Qs and the present-day E-8s (the latter being based on the Boeing 707 airframe). Is this still the technology used by Russia, does anyone know?

Yes it is, photos of one of the aircraft clearly showed the towed antenna cupola.

Departing Shannon this morning after 2am, RFF8461, Russian Air Force Antonov AN124-100, Reg:RA-82038, 12th Military Transport Aircraft Division, 224th Transport Squadron, Seshcha AFB, Moscow. This is the aircraft that delivered medical aid to New York City.

I just see that EI-105 departed over a hour late.
Seems odd with such little traffic. Did they encounter a technical fault?

Possibly slot restricted at the destination.

It's the new PC-12 that was delivered to the Irish Air Corps yesterday.

Hardly any aircraft taking off here in Luton obviously but of those that are they all seem to be A330 cargos which here I'm only used to hearing in the wee small hours. These days they're coming and going across the day.

I have been wondering how they’re filling the roster as many seem to be operating for a bigger part of the clock. Could be a small opportunity for some airline pilots going through tough times if cargo operators need to staff up?

The cargo operators will be staffed for their needs, why hire more staff if you don’t have the aircraft to use them?
