EI3843 landed on Second attempt at Cork, due fog.

Really relentless today in Cork. 15:08z update fog in 200m (RVR's 250m all points)

That's below CAT II minimums so FR9948 (FAO-ORK) holding.

And FR9948 is off to Shannon.:o

How come some planes try to land and others don't ?

Is it down to the size of plane, the technology onboard, amount of fuel onboard, experience, all of the above ?

In this case it was simply because the visibility dropped so rapidly.

Usually differences depend on the ILS rating of the plane, whether it's CAT I, CAT II or CAT III.

I'm probably not the best user to explain this, (although considering I know everything i might be) someone else may jump in.

FR908 making an approach at Cork.

On approach to Cork it reported that it needed 300m RVR at all points, so they did not accept the approach with RVR's of Touchdown 325m, Midpoint 250m and Stopend 275m.

After conversing with his station manager, the pilot clarified the situation to needing 300m at Touchdown, 175m at Midpoint and 75m at stopend. By the time he realised this, the RVR had dropped to 275m at Touchdown. Gone back up to 300m now and an approach is being made.

    Edit: Landed

Issue with ILS now at Cork, Warning light on Localiser. Both the Localiser and Glidepath are now off air.

Kinda fecked now if this fog keeps up.

STK82C (Which is EI3728) requesting push back, ATC informing them they may not get back into Cork this evening as the ILS is U/S. (Unserviceable)

FR9947 will also be operating Shannon-Faro instead of Cork-Faro this evening, owing to an earlier diversion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,193 ✭✭✭✭JCX BXC

EI723 near now, informed CAT I and II ILS is U/S on 17 pending engineers, and RVR's are below CAT II minimums anyway at 250m. I'd assume EI723 will hold waiting for an a CAT I ILS approach RWY35 (RVR Needed is 550m I think, could be wrong)

    Off to Shannon.

EI926 SNN-AGP queried with Cork while passing near the aerodrome regarding the ILS situation and will call them in Malaga.

ILS about to become serviceable again, EI3833 inbound. RVR's 300m.

Engineers not quite ready to sign off on the ILS, so EI3833 routing to the hold. RVR's now 375m at all points, and EI3833 has 90 of hold fuel.

Ah Jasus! This is why you need to know your company SOP's and Ops manual. Basic schoolboy stuff a professional pilot should know:confused:

Used to love this stuff! Required minimum RVR for a Low Vis take off was 125m based on the runway lighting. No instruments required. However a Take Off Alternate was required as you couldn't land back if there was a problem. The take off alternate would normally be SNN or even KIR as long as the Wx was above minima.

Runway 35 has a shortened approach lighting system, unfortunately this pushes the required minimum RVR up to 750m.

RYR36QD from BCN-DUB currently out as far as Mullingar heading towards Longford to avoid cells/CB's to the east

That's very far out! Looks very weird.

Changing RWY to 16 now due weather at DUB.

Wind is 160 degrees 18kts G 28kts and there is large cells west of RWY10, so both of these factors.
