Hi, just had a question I figured someone here would know,(might have been covered, apologies if it has), I was flying out of dub on sat 17th very early in the morning, was still dark, and I noticed a Boeing 747 parked up, not sure how often a 747 would visit dub but I haven't seen one before, flying back today and I'm fairly sure the same 747 was still parked up, I didnt recognise the paint scheme, just curious really.

FR805, Stansted to Knock turned around north of Cavan and is heading east.

Edit: Heading west again. Dense fog at knock currently.

After a long hold near Dublin, its back on it's way.

EI3675 EDI-SNN seems not to be heading towards Shannon anymore. The fog in Shannon is almost cleared.

Edit: FR805 and EI3675 are now both on track for Shannon.

BE655 EDI-NOC going around at Knock, due to crew qualifications they can only make a CAT I ILS approach, and they hit a dense patch of cloud on the approach. Repositing for another approach.

Edit: Entering the hold for 10minutes instead.

This PC-12 just flew over my house. I had to look on FR24, as it sounded unfamiliar. I don't recall ever seeing a PC-12 flying over my way before.

I wonder what the story with this 767 is. It departed Bahrain.

It looked like it departed Weston. I just don't recall having ever seeing one myself, other than in photos.

Stood beside a few of them. Very beautiful Aircraft up close.

Piper Meridian is very similar so could be mistaken for a PC-12 in the air and in the ground

NOAA's Gulfstream IV now on station monitoring Hurricane Matthew.
Some interesting looking additions to the nose and the tail.
Its also fascinating to see this amount of free airspace in what is usually an extreamly busy area.

Just looking at EI-385 from LHR-SNN, it climbed to FL 380 but just remained at 380 for around 5 mins. before starting it's descent:

Why do aircraft climb so high for such short sectors when max altitude is only maintained for 5 mins. or so?

More efficent than flying at 20,000ft or something.

More efficent than flying at 20,000ft or something.

Well, I think we all know that 20,000 ft. is uneconomical for a jet airliner but my question was why an A320 would climb to FL 380 for a cruise lasting just about 5 mins.

I'd have thought it would burn a lot of fuel to climb so high, only to start it's descent after such a short period in the cruise. Hoping for some informed input from air-crew or similar.

Sorry you're stuck with us. :)

While it's using more fuel to get up there it's using bugger all on the long glide back down.

It may be that that's the agreed flight plan and ATC instruct the crew to stick to this, there are only certain flight levels etc you can use when travelling a certain direction etc. Other air traffic/ planned flight routes play a part in how high/ low you climb to/ cruise at

Just 50 meters visibility at knock airport currently. Thick fog. Overcast at 100ft. Stansted flight due around 0915 will almost certainly be diverting

RYR69UX, STN-NOC going into the hold at ENULA, right hand pattern 2 minute legs. If visibility doesn't improve their off to Shannon
