Thompson TOM1204 Newcastle - Funchal showing as diverting to Dublin. It performed its U-Turn just off the south coast

Is that a blip? Why so low?

guessing in the absence of any other information, they've got a pressurisation fault, and are trying to clear it, with the option to divert to Shannon if they can't clear it.

They've just turned South as I was typing the original message, so looking even more like a diversion to Shannon, and possibly staying off shore to avoid high ground and possible turbulence.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Looks like its on its way into SNN.

Not sure what's going on with the UA76, it's gone past the Shannon approach, but maintaining 10,000, not showing any unusual squawk, but definitely not heading towards Newark, so doesn't make sense at the moment, unless it is a FR24 error, and the aircraft is being test flown after maintenance repair in Belfast.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Possible Nose Gear issue, burning off excess fuel before landing

Is this speculation about the nose gear? Anything from ATC?

  • Registered Users Posts: 305 ✭✭lovelyhurler

Listening to ATC he's going to be circling for another hour, and confirms that he has an issue with the nose gear.
Wants to do a low approach for inspection.
Due into SNN at 13:40 local.

Would be happy with that source, and it makes sense, burn off excess weight/fuel before landing. Might take a while, they'd have had pretty much full tanks when they launched from BFS, so could be there off the Clare coast for a while yet.

Not speculation, confirmed on ATC a few minutes ago, they were considering DUB but chose SNN to burn off fuel along the west coast.

At about 12:45 UA76 quoted another hour and fifteen minutes before a 500 foot flyover for a nose gear visual inspection from the tower.

99% sure I heard them say 13:00. Would they be operating off UTC?

Makes a lot of sense, there's 757 maintenance in Shannon, a long runway, and in all honesty, a lot less disruption to other traffic while they perform the low approach and then landing, while Dublin could and would have taken it if necessary, Shannon is as well equipped in all aspects, so much less disruption to traffic flows.

Trust all goes well for them, can't be pleasant for anyone on board, but burning off excess fuel also makes sense, just in case the suspect problem turns into a real problem.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Aviation uses GMT aka "Zulu" as it would be impractical and unsafe to have to clarify time zones.
