Any more on Jerry Flannerys (Catherine St) knocking into the building next door? Wasn't there word that he was looking to have a live music venue?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,034 ✭✭✭Vanquished

He submitted a new application recently. The last application was refused due to noise concerns I think. This could be another protracted affair!

Dolans v Flannerys new live venue not enough room for two

Why wouldn't there be enough room for two venues?

Surely the popularity or success of gigs in either venue would come down to the acts that are booked.

I woukdn't actually agree with this view bit if there isn't room for two then why moan in a previous post about one guy operating in three venues.

I dont think therea enough room for 2 full time venues but new young promotors or other peole who may run some events cant get into the market or castle

Dolans have contacts build up over the years and you can be sure if a new venue was to open they would protect them.Ive even noticed dolans the last 12 months or so have really improved there marketing
Cobblestones have cut back music and tryed to be a gig venue
I know dont agree Dolans have 2other venues to run gigs aswell but Mick Dolan is well liked in the music scene
Dont think Jerry Flannery has the same repspect

Always thought you could run a decent festival in Limerick with Thomond Park, King John's, Dolans and The Milkmarket

The Band Steps coming to TP Friday 6th July.

    Who's excited???

    Will they sell 1,000 tickets?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,926 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

I'd say it will be like the Aslan gig and played in the marque next to the dug out bar.

They'll need to link up with a few similar nostalgia acts to attract a crowd. Maybe the last few members of S-Club 7. I'd say even McBusted would have been a bigger attraction at this stage.

They wouldn't even sell out The Library.

Cost and demand, I'd imagine. You'd want a megastar to be able to sell out Thomond Park.

True and let's be honest - apart from the dinosaurs (like Bruce - who I'd pay into because I'm a dinosaur myself), there is no such thing nowadays.

The music industry is decimated by spotify/youtube etc. and now wants flashinthepan efforts that it can control.
It doesn't want megastars telling it what to do. You'll never see such acts rise again.

Honest to god, I though the name of the act was "The Band Steps" and that they were somebody I'd never heard of. Also wondering what a band step was in general.

I disagree. Throughout the 80s and 90s the music industry wanted "pop acts" that they could control and make an easy buck. But in that time we have seen a lot of great bands come through. I am not even going to mention to mega bands like U2 Metalica Queen standard because obviously they are all huge. But what about Nirvana Oasis Blur who in the mid 90s era of boy bands, made it big. In fact bigger than any manufactured crap in the same era.

The nougthies gave rise to Snow Patrol Kings of Leon and The Killers who all made it pretty big.

I dont think the music industry can stop real bands.

As for Thomond Park, they need to get someone in to manage the events there. Maybe set up a weekend festival for during the summer. The August bank holiday they could have a few bands playing in one day or over two days.

The Killers Franz Ferdinand Kodaline Bellx1 Glen Hansard (with the Frames). Those kinda acts could easily be attracted. Add in a few cover bands and local acts to fill up a 2 or 3 day event and it would easily sell out the festival. It could bring 20k people to each day of the gig. Or if it was lets say 10k both days from outside limerick it could lead to a potential 20k people wanting to spend money in Limerick over the course of the weekend where many of them will try to stay in hotel accom. Add that to a bank holiday weekend where bars are open late and you have bars making a killing also.

I just cant understand the lack of ambition

20k won't fill Thomond Park for a concert. It would look like the Bob Dylan gig which was terrible for all sorts of reasons. Very few acts sell out stadiums any more and thats why most of them are kept in Dublin. How many stadium gigs are in Cork and Galway these days. (That ginger lad excepted and heard Thomond and the RDS were not used due to possible rugby commitments around that time).

The marquee in Cork or the Arts Festival tent in Galway only hold a small fraction of what would be required to fill Thomond, or even make it look busy. I'd eat my hat if Glen Hansard sold out thomond park. Did his recent gig even sell out?

    Ambition by who??

The simple fact of the matter is if a promoter thinks they will make money they will book an appropriate band. Thomond Park don't book bands. They provide the venue to promoters.

Glen Hansard and the Frames, BellX1 wouldn't come next or near filling Thomond Park.

Instead of answering to you both separately here it goes.

I gave an example of bands that as a combination of two or three, would sell out thomond park in a festival type format. Bellx1 Glen Hansard and Kodaline for example would sell out Thomond as a one day gig. As for Glen, he always sells out his gigs and that is alone withohut the frames. Anytime the frames play they will easily sell out

There are plenty of acts that will be/ rumoured to be touring next year and would easily sell out Thomond by themselves also

Garth is one of the of course acts that could do a couple of gigs around the country now that he has bad water with Croke park.

Then there is Elton John who would be in the same light as Dylan. He also played in Limerick a long long long time ago in fact.

Pearl Jam would easily sell it out and are touring in 2018. They could be playing cork though so it depends on if they want sentiment (cork) or a big stadium which they would fill in Limerick.

As for Thomond no organising the events yes thats true. But it doesnt take from the fact that they can fish for these events that seem to happen in Waterford Galway Cork Kilkenny and the backcrack of nowhere. These events happen all the time outsde Dublin but thats because people with initiative actually work hard for them.....................

Thomond park as a venue is failing not because the promoters dont want to use it. Its because the events people in Thomond are not marketing it properly

100 % agreed these bands cant fill venues 1/5 the size of TP. They need to think of whats happening currently in pop music not 20 years ago. Keep dolans and cobblestones for those bands past their sell by.

    Acts that would fill TP:

    Rihanna
    Katy Perry
    Taylor Swift
    Kendrick Lemar
    Eminem
    LCD Soundsystem
    Daft Punk
    Beyonce
    Radiohead
    Foo Fighters
    Bjork

    The list is endless..

Elton, Pearl Jam? Are you serious! Old people don't go to gigs..

What needs to be remembered about TP, is that they have/had a contract with Aitken Promotions rather than MCD, who control the vast majority of big acts coming into the country. MCD aren't really bothered sending big acts outside of Dublin.

How about Bob Dylan, Bruce, Sting. Who went to those gigs and sold them out???

Your post is nuts. You first say they should think about now and not 20 years ago and then name acts like Bjork..................

I agree that some of those gigs would sell out. Although I would question most of them to be honest.

Are you saying that The Killers Franz Ferdinand Kodaline Bellx1 and the frames wouldnt sell out a venue of 4000?????? (1/5th of TP)

Franz Ferdinand fair enough probably wouldnt alone these days (they did sell out the Aviva many moons ago) but they would easily add attraction to a line up of similar acts.

The Killers are just back from a long break and are selling out big venues all over

BellX1 and The Frames have sold out huge venues all over.

The difference between what I am saying and what you are is, I am saying there should be a one day festival type gig rather than one big act.

If you have one big act you are relying on selling 20-24k tickets. If its a bunch of good but not super acts you will a better chance of selling it

But then again I dont know why I am even talking to you about this you think Pearl Jam wouldnt sell TP but LCD Soundsystem would

Bjork has a new album out this month Her last album was top ten. Bob Dylans 2017 effort barely made the top 40. Its been 15 years since Sting had a top ten selling album.

All of those bands together yes would fill TP but none alone would IMO. LCD sold out MSG in minutes. As i'm sure Pearl Jam would but they haven't put out a new album since 2013 so yes my point is someone current is needed not another act for the 40-50 somethings. But then again I dont know why I am even talking to you about this you are obviously from a different era.

I love the idea of a festival type gig. It's hard work though organizing that. And doesn't camping play a big part in the whole festival experience? There's Green space to the left of TP and the back of LIT that would make a grand campsite. Joint venture between LIT and TP. I've definitely had worse ideas😀

    Old?

Pearl Jam would sell Thomond in minutes, so would Elton..

It’s a 30,000 stadium.. anyone who can sell the 3arena quickly would do Thomond fine
