Yeah, just tap the pictures, I was being all fancy and stuff...
Essentially you end up with a RP0 with a set of 4 USB hubs in a case, the case and hub cost €16 and the RP0 for €5.

So, they arrived yesterday, the hub and the case.
Not too bad, 7 days from order to arrival, from the crazy swinging guys in the Czech republic!

Anyone here have problems with the Bluetooth in RPi3 at all? I've had mine about a month now and have tried EVERYTHING to get it to link up to my 8bitdo controller's with no success at all. They do work when they are connected via USB but that's not what I want.

    I'm starting to think I have a faulty RPi3 :(

Haven't gotten my hands on one of those controllers yet, but they're fairly fiddly to set up. Did you get it working with Bluetooth on an older RPi?

    Thanks for the reply Tomo.

It's my first pi tbh. I've followed all the guides to set the Bluetooth up in the terminal with updates etc, but keeps failing for some reason, but wifi is working fine on the pi3 with no problems at all.

I have loaded in retropie a few times with no problems too and when I go to set up my controller's in the Bluetooth it does see the controller and links up with them but just does not work when I go out of the Bluetooth settings and still only works when I use it via USB connection, just not what I want really.

Kinda driving me crazy now, it's such a simple thing and I can't get it to work at all, that's why I'm thinking maybe the Bluetooth on the board is faulty, if after this amount of time trying, it's still not working, but everything else is working fine.

Couple of probably useless suggestions, could you try and bluetooth connect your phone to your Pi, although it can't find anything to do with my phone when it finds it, my pi bluetooth has no problem recognising it and connecting to it, presumably that suggests whether bluetooth is working more generally or not.

Other useless suggestion, have you followed Floob's guide on youtube, not completely accurate as its for 3.4, but worth a stab?

Apologies if both the above are obvious, I've only just got my pi 3 and don't have anything as fancy as an 8bitdo controller.

    Off this particular topic.
I've seen a seller on Adverts trying to sell Pi Zeros for 50 euro. I was going to sell mine on there, with case and pins and connections etc, was going to stick it up for 35 (which after free postage would have made me about 8 or 9 euro). Had a wave of guilt for profiteering though when I looked on Pimoroni and you can something very similar for £16.50 delivered brand new (though I have a nicer case!), loads in stock. https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/raspberry-pi-zero

I'll hang onto mine I think and wait for Zero4U (as found by CiDeRmAn) to come out with a version to their hub for the latest Pi Zero and have a perfectly clear conscience :D

The fact that it's registering in the setup menu would lead me to believe that the onboard Bluetooth isn't faulty, just seems to be an issue with the controller registering in retropie. Haven't had much experience with retropie myself. Are there any controller setup options in the retropie menu?

I have to just say, we've had some unpleasant exchanges here regarding people who buy in stock of cheap but in demand items and then sell them at a premium, having deprived would be owners of stock with their purchases of multiple units in the first place, those people who couldn't get the item via normal means take their temper out on the "profiteers".

Capitalism in the first class I'm sure but it does act against the natural tendency here of co-operation, synergy and all that togetherness stuff.
Something like a €5 computer that was deliberately made to put a versatile device in the hands of creators whilst avoiding the temptation to load the cost with profit margins, but then has scalpers load the prices anyway, it makes me feel sick tbh.

That said, the PiZero isn't as cheap as it lets on, by the time you get a micro SD, PSU, powered USB and mini HDMI adaptor, it gets the cost closer to that of a standard Pi rather rapidly, but €50 is really taking the p1ss.

Just on the 8bitdo controllers, there's a big thread, or whatever they call it there, on Reddit.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Turns out I wasn't going mad, seems there was a bug in retropie 3.7 with Bluetooth. Just updated to 3.8 there and success! All my 8bitdo controllers work now.

God that was driving me nuts!

OK question, just saw odroid c2 looks much stronger then the pie 3, 2 GHz processor and 2gb DDR ram.

Anyone done a retropie/emulation station set up with one? Or is the pi just better for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Finally jumping on the Pi bandwagon and slighlty unsure of a few things. Will be mostly using it to play games with bluetooth controller, and Kodi as well perhaps.

1.Whats the best Pi to get right now? I've seen different bugs have been mentioned with RetroPie and just checking if the newest Pi is better at handling it.
    2. How have people found the bluetooth controllers? Any specific one that's working out best?

    Thanks for any advice folks.

Just fiddling around with my RP B+ the other day, refining the games and emulators on offer, when the wifi decided to stop connecting to it, at least from the PC side.
I mean, the RP itself is still broadcasting away, and it can still connect to the internet but Filezilla, Cyberduck and even a terminal window from Putty won't connect.
Don't know what is going on.
Powered it off, powered it back on, took out and reinserted the dongle (waa hey!) still no luck.
Very annoying, as I just need to take off a few of the emulators that don't work well on the older hardware, before I hot glue this thing into the little Sony TV.
Control-wise, and because I already have one doing arcade duties in the cabinet, I settled on the simple option of a cheap Argos wired PS3 controller, which is working perfectly with everything, at least so far.
Power supply, now that's a question, Kerbdog suggested finding a 5v point on the TV's own PCB and draw the power from there, meaning no need for a second PSU for the RP, but I'm not so sure, could be just as handy to shorten the TV's own power cable, pop a slim two socket adaptor on the back and run a single cable from there, not the neatest or prettiest, but it'll work and I won't have to pressure Kerb to do any more soldering!

I know it's not strictly on topic so apologies.
Found a very cheap USB/ethernet hub that works well with my pi zero. (powered by the pi using a micro to USB adapter)

    http://s.aliexpress.com/yQfuIbAr

3 USB hubs and the RJ45, about 3 euro and the seller I used delivered in just under 2 weeks.

Sounds a bit shilly that post but thought it was pretty handy for the money and makes my zero a bit more useable.

Going to put retropie and a few games on it now.

Gotta give a tonne of credit to the youtuber "Floob". Videos can be rather long for the info inside but the bits that are there are pure gold.

Decided to go down the multi SD card route for now as it gets messy mixing arcade and console games imo. So I got his attractmode SD card image for my arcade setup so nice preview videos playing while selecting games, similar to hyperspin.

Followed his vid on setting up my 8bitdo arcade stick although I had issues with getting retroarch to recognise it. Turns out retroarch sees completely different button numbers than the under lying system and emulationstation. Once I figured that out I just had to rebind the keys for retroarch.

Then finally followed his tutorial on adding bezel overlays, scanlines and curved monitor effects for a few hundred games. Which suits my current setup with a 1080p widescreen lcd.

Now just to curate a good collection of games to play :D:D which knowing me I'll spend less time playing that tweaking the layout!

Oh no such luck. Im running a cobbled together setup. So pi, 20 inch screen that my laptop hooks up to when I'm not "arcading" and my sanwa 8bitdo bluetooth arcade stick (which is very responsive!).

Some day when I stop all travel plans I'll own a proper cab. A boy can dream... :o

I thought that was quite reasonable, will get a bit of a play with it and I can always use the pi for something different if it doesn't work out.

Yes, but the analogue sticks give you better control in games with analogue controls, and the twin sticks are of a great benefit when playing the only game worth playing Boulder Dash Robotron!

Hello guy, Any help would be epic.

I have a problem, "so many controller isses lol", Using retro pie 3 + on board bluetooth.
    using wireless ps3 controllers.

I have 1, went to a friend house for some 2 player fun, work grand connected it up, and it just worked perfectly.
go over again, but forget my controller this, so I use his two controller.
problems start here. All 3 work on emulation station, but only 1 work during games "random 1 will work, in an emulator, its also reading as both player 1 / 2 controlling both"

Ive tryed uninstalling/reinstalling the ps3 drivers, Ive tryed deleted the retro arch config file, and no look, anyone ran into this.

So I got me a nice lil 14 inch Sony CRT and decided to grab a composite cable and scart to plug the Pi in and .. it plays.. but it's not real pretty. Reading up on it apparently I need a HDMI to VGA 15khz converter and then something like the UMSA which just seems to add to a list of possible problems. Now actual consoles are out of the question as I had to fight for the space for the TV. So I'm not sure what to do. I'll keep the TV for now, maybe the console issue can be revisited later.

Hi. I bought a rasberry pi with all the games and kodi preinstalled. Im an absolute luddite when it comes to tech hence buying it ready to go. I bought it so I could play games from when i was a kid. But....its really pixelated for snes and megadrive games. Any way someone here could help me out? Is my tv too big? Id love to get this fixed in time for christmas to suprise the bro.

Setup Amiberry last night and I'm very impressed with it actually. Boot time to Amiga interface is about 3-5 seconds on the Pi 3(before and overclocks). It's basically the Winuae interface(so UAE) and supports hardfiles, CD32 and all that good stuff.
As its based on the DietPi linux dist its very snappy and even supports the Pi LCD touchscreen.

Now planning on 3D printing an Amiga related case and sticking the Pi in that.
