Followup - So, the engineers are here as I type, I can't get on to the newly live 5g ready site in charleville, but they are picking up 50mg from a legacy site slievereagh so are going to install and connect me to that. They have said all legacy sites will be upgraded in the next few months, is that fairytales? I do have 14 days cooling so will see how I get on for next few days...

While they're there, ask them if any/many sites have/will have fibre to the mast.

And also if the router and antenna are 5G equipment, other posters here will know if it's the same equipment as they have for 4G/LTE. That'll indicate whether they're using "5G" as a marketing or techncal term.

Afraid they've just gone, but they've said the equipment they have installed are the latest so we wont need a new installation when the site is upgraded

Thanks. It seems they may have moved from Cat 6 LTE equipment to Cat 12 but the manufacturer's site makes no mention of 5G.

When did you order? You have 14 days from when you order that’s when it starts not when it is installed.
They are deinstalling mine in the next few weeks

So it looks like there will be a Gardai probe into spy risks linked to Huawei 5G mobile networks https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/gardai-to-probe-spy-risks-linked-to-huawei-5g-mobile-networks-gf72fjwfg

Imagine are basically betting on Huawei gear and the NBS been cancelled.

With news that the NBS will be signed off this week and potential issues with Huawei these are nervous times for imagine. They've made 2 big gambles and if both of these fail they will be out of business in a couple of years time

If the NPB actually happens and FTTH get's rolled out throughout rural Ireland, Imagine will have no choice but become a reseller of FTTH like Sky, Airwire, Vodafone and Digiweb. I can't imagine Bolger giving up that easily, there are many things we can say about him but one of those things is he has huge determination and will stop at nothing to keep Imagine in business and doing well.

NBS is more a less a done deal now according the the Sunday Times, the Sunday Times doesn't get story's wrong https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/green-light-for-3bn-rural-web-x299kk376

Hopefully it really does happen this time, there's been very much uncertainty over this for years. If we get the green light and start seeing spades in the ground, it will be a huge relief for many people here.

You would think though that any customers currently with imagine would take the easy option and switch to imagines ftth, imagine might even waive the contract cessation cost as a carrot. All depends if imagine can offer competitive pricing though.

I don't think there is any chance of them becoming a FTTH reseller. They actually sold their landline based customer base to Magnet in 2016. If the wireless part if the business fails the company will fold IMO.

Nah, they'll just sue the RAN vendor again.

I would think given the choice of folding the company and utilising its customer base to resell FTTH, they would seriously consider the latter.

yeah I can't imagine Bulger giving up that easily if rural wireless get's replaced by rural FTTH.

Before that even happens, he would probably cut the cost of Imagine's service to make it seem more competitive than lowest tier FTTH plans. He ain't going to give up his wireless dream or business without a serious fight.

I'm on the Old Kilcullen mast and while it went through a period where it was essentially unusable for a few hours every evening, it seems to be a little better now. Having said that, I inadvertently kicked off a software update on my laptop yesterday evening and my son's in-game ping immediately shot up to ~3000ms, rendering his game unplayable.

I don't use the Imagine router (long story) so I have no idea if it is still locked down.

Also, that mast is showing as full on the website. Are they offering you a slot on it?

Here's my speeds every four hours for the last couple of weeks. Note the obvious dips at 21:00 most days.

Hey yrrag1974. Yeah, it is still pretty much the same. It does slow down significantly in the evening, but it doesn't actually grind to a halt unless something saturates the connection (e.g. downloading updates etc.). General browsing/streaming tends to be OK.

I have no idea where this mast sits on the priority list for the "5G" rollout, but if that happens, it might help a bit at peak times.

They're still decent speeds - I'd be happy with them. Compared to my 8mb eir!! He said the mast is due to be upgraded this year sometime but I'll take that with a pinch of salt! How close are you to the mast?

I have to say I debated a LONG time over whether to join or not based on the feedback on this forum but so far so good. Old Kilcullen mast - so not new and good few established users on it.

Fantastic during the day - 50 / 60 Mbps down.

Drops to between 5 and 20 around 8 or 9 at night. That's acceptable for me given its the only alternative to fibre and still better than my 8 Mb (in theory) eir line.

Mast hasn't received the upgrade yet so hoping for a further improvement when it does.
