In regards to the knee injury situation, I am not a doctor but I have done both my knees in badly so I have some experience.

If its swelling badly then get it scanned. It's best to get these things diagnosed or you end up like me, limping around for a week on 3 broken bones and a torn acl, medial and patella tendon and doing irreparable damage.

If its just a strain then let it heal and if you are worried about it then bulking the muscle around the knee is something you should consider. Squats, Lunges, Romanian Dead Lift, Knee Extensions will all help bulk the muscle around the knee and make it stronger. I also wear a good knee sock, you can get them on Amazon for cheap, I find them better than a support as there is a lot more maneuverability but they provide extra support.

Anyone know the best place to sell second-hand gi's?

I have an Vulkan Pro-Light A3 (Black) and a 93 Brand Strauss A2L (White top/grey pants) that I don't fit in anymore/never have despite what lil' old White Belt me thought regarding sizes :pac:

They're hardly used and just taking up space in my wardrobe but I'm not aware of anywhere that I could realistically sell them? Adverts? Donedeal? A page on Facebook? Anyone have any recommendations?

I'm currently nursing a knee injury that I received when I was swept with this sweep (The "Assis Sweep", apparently) and my left knee twisted as I fell.

It's over a week later now and I still get sharp bursts of pain when I move my knee and probably have about 60% mobility in it. I can go down stairs with ease but raising it as well as twisting it still cause pain.

Can anyone recommend how I can prevent this injury re-occurring when I'm inevitably swept with this sweep again? Or was it just a once in a blue moon type of thing?

Currently drilling this sweep a lot. Currently finding it hard to hit on bigger lads.............its definitely me as the smaller higher belts nab me with it handy enough (#white belt woes). They cant see anything wrong with what I'm doing though.

May mind me (and others) knees:D

    I do it both ways.

I find that doing it your way is less likely to result in an actual sweep, but if I do hit it, (usually on someone not expecting it) I still have the foot, prime for a straight footlock.

When I reach across, I find the sweep more effective, the trade off being I loose hold of the foot, and have to scramble to get the foot back.

I'd imagine that's more down to your execution that the one hand being stronger.
The foot needs to be hard agaisnt your hip. This happens more naturally when you reach across, but there's no reason for the same side grip to be looser. Elbow tight.

Went back to training last night. Couldn't mount. Couldn't armbar or triangle. Could barely rotate for a single-leg.

    Physio booked for Friday. :(

Me too, it also means that its very easy to transition to full X. I generally use this to bait and get them to open up and then go for full X.

If you are doing this sweep it's vital that you really clamp the leg between your knees and push away so they cant stack you. Always make sure your outer leg is on the hip as if it crosses the top of their leg that's a DQ for knee reaping.

I kind of like the cut of Sponeybarger's jib. "I'll walk you down and show you what death feels like". :P

Well he is 100% right as Ryan would murder him, so technically he will show him what death feels like.

Won't do much walking when Tonon rips his leg off

It turns out I've torn my meniscus and I have cartilage damage in the "top" of the knee. ACL/MCL/PCL/LCL/ABCDEFG are all fine though, thankfully.

5 weeks off the mat recommended. Still feeling slight pain in it when walking or stationary for a long time (like my desk at work) but it is improving.

    Also going slightly mad. :pac:

Start taking Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin and MSM/Collagen. Myprotein used to do a combined supplement which I found to be quite helpful. I also take Omega-3 oils plus I try and add Turmeric to as much as possible (this is a natural anti inflammatory).

I have tendonitis in my shoulder rotator cuff, feckin killing me after training but doing some good strengthening exercises and it's getting better.

I’m 5 months off the mats myself and going crazy, doctor delayed me getting a mri referral for over 2 months as he was sure it was a “soft tissue “ injury. Appointment with a specialist now in two weeks, physio reckons I’ll be getting a scope on the knee.

Just realized it’s the first time I’ve posted in here!

Brotherhood of the Bad Knees :pac:

Rest up lads! Appreciate the supplement recommendations. It's something I'm really interested in- I've been reading about Magnesium lately for post-training soreness and muscle recovery.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,339 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

I was taking magnesium. Never had issues with soreness, but at not be related.

Should I be taking collagen and glucosamine firbthis injury?

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,339 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Went back to training last night, very cautiously. Played a very passive game when rolling, but managed to hit two moves I was studing during my downtime. A brabo from bottom position and an armbar from Z-Guard (didn't get the top as partner defended well to run down the clock).

So didn't feel like total lost time.

Great to hear you're back training. I've also been watching a rake of video while off the mat. I feel like I'm best friends with Ryan Hall and Caio Terra at this stage :pac:

I'm hoping to be back properly next week.
Was down last week at one of the beginners classes just to see how the hand/wrist held up. Plus 3 months away pretty much ****s your cardio :)

I've also been doing some homework to pass the time, mostly stuff from side bottom and in their guard, as that's where I seem to spend most of my time.

Also been looking at wrist locks, seeing as I'm allowed to do them now.

I take hydrolised collagen and would definitely recommend to anyone who trains.

First time poster on the thread.

Started training BJJ back in May, and i'm a proud white belt(hooked) but the last 2 months i'm really suffering with pains in my elbows(i'm working on my armbar defense i swear) thumbs, middle fingers and lower back.

Now i better point out, i only started doing any form of exercise in Jan this year, before that i was a 30+ year old fat slob. so i guess i really am pushing my body to the limit.

Does anyone have any tips on how to relieve the pain?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,902 ✭✭✭MagicIRL

My advice: See a physio. I use "Personal Health" in Rathmines, Dublin.

Is the pain constant or only after training? If it's after training it sounds like you're obviously doing something to aggravate it (you've probably guessed that)

Normally, in an armbar for example, the damage is done as soon as the arm is straight, not when the pain starts. The pain comes afterwards, like... extra-damage being done.

Tap early and often and see if that helps to relieve anything.

The thumbs/fingers sounds like straining from gripping too tightly all the time. You only want to grip tightly when you've intent, otherwise you'll be constantly straining the tendons in the hand.

The lower back is definitely a common jiujitsu complaint. Argos sell a €12 foam roller. Buy it and use it to roll your back before and after every class.

Again, speak to a physio and they'll be able to really guide you in a diagnosis.

The pain in the lowerback and elbows are constant( i do suffer from psoriasis on my elbows too, so hopefully the elbow pain isn't actually arthritis) the thumbs and fingers are the next day after training, and depending on how hard the session is, could last a day, or a couple of days, but i guess i can live with that kind of pain.

I have a back baller, just don't use it enough, i guess i should start going on it daily for the lower back.

    Thanks for the reply.
