usb to sata cable - optical drive

I was wondering of I connect a salvaged slot loading optical drive to a simple USB-Sata cable (2.5") will it work or does there need to be a controller board?

If its like one of the SSD kit units then itll work just fine assuming it can power the drive, which can be hard to determine.

That's the cable ED_E was referring to above, I got one as part of the migration kit with a Samsung SSD drive. It's not possible to say if it will work, especially on a laptop as some USB ports don't pump out enough juice to power a motorised drive. If it's a desktop you should be ok.

Do you have a portable HDD that connects with a USB cable and has no other power source? If one of those works then you're ok.

Draw varies from device to device. Unless you knew the HDD pulled more than the ODD you can't make that conclusion.

The old hd works in a USB caddy so its probably worth a punt. I'm think I've seen those cables with double USB lead so might get one of those to increase power.

I was looking for something similar to use with some spare 2.5" hhds I have and came across this:

It's worth getting something with the second usb connector - it will certainly work with the cd drive and gives you the ability to use 2.5" hds too.
