Very warm here today in West Clare. Quiet unpleasant in heavy clothes.

Feeling very warm here as well in the sun - though most of Dublin isn't, so I'm quite lucky.

By unseasonably cool conditions next week, are we talking unseasonably cool in which of the following kind:

    - December 2010
    - January 1963
    - May 1996
    - April 1989

I'm thinking May 1996 (definitely not December 2010 and January 1963 at least :pac:).

Why can't it be like this for the rest of April? :(. COLD AIR , we wanted you at Winter but now we don't want you, feck off until the end of November.

    My predictions

March - Very dull, cold and wet. - Dullest March on record
April - Very cold, dull and wet. Potential cold snap. - Coldest April on record and maybe dullest in over 24 years
May - Average temperatures but sunny and dry. - Nothing remarkable

    ^ I hope not! LOL

Well I am half right so far.

    March

    Dull - X
    Cold - ✓
    Wet - X

    April

    Cold - ✓
    Dull - ✓
    Wet - ✓

And May is looking like a cold first half followed by a possible warm second half though it could be just average! If it works out like cold first half then warm second half, I will be bang on for average temperatures in May.

Given today, I suspect that as long as it's sunny and not too windy, it'll not *feel* too cold. Of course, that's a lot of 'ifs'

How long is next weeks cold expected to linger? I seen a big blocking high next week to our N'west on the forecast today , I really hope it pops down for a visit.

Nice day. Pity I'm work with broken aircon. Went out for lunch. Gloriously mild (perhaps even warm without the breeze) in the sunshine.

Mad fact about the weather here at Grange

It has been an exceptionally poor April so I wouldn't fear if I were you.

    ^^^^^^^^
I would not call this april exceptionally poor, the temps have been on the cool side but its been not all that wet.

Lovely day here today in the east ,cooler then in the west ,current temp 13.8c.

OH YES IT HAS BEEN WET...!!

    My totals this April

    1st: 3.6mm
    2nd: 19.5mm
    3rd: 8.4mm
    4th: 4.5mm

    ^ that's already 36.0mm (92% of my monthly LTA)

    5th: 0.0mm
    6th: 5.3mm
    7th: 2.9mm
    8th: 9.7mm
    9th: 0.0mm
    10th: 0.0mm
    11th: 39.2mm

    ^ now that's 93.1mm (239% of my monthly LTA)

    12th: 0.0mm
    13th: 0.0mm
    14th: 1.4mm
    15th: 3.8mm
    16th: 0.0mm
    17th: 0.0mm
    18th: 0.2mm
    19th: 0.0mm
    20th: 0.0mm

Recently, it has gotten a lot better but the first 11 days (most of them) made this month very poor here.

As you can see from my April statistics up to now

Rainfall: 98.5mm (253% of the LTA)
Mean temperature: 7.0c (-1.2c below the LTA)
Sunshine: 92 hours (64% of the LTA) - it has gotten better recently but still duller than usual by this time of the month

By this time last year, I was up to twice that sunshine total around 170-180 hours - and it was my sunniest April on record.

You can tell a big difference between the first and second half (not done yet so of course not as wet/sunny) also

    Rainfall

    1st-15th: 98.3mm
    16th-20th: 0.2mm

    Temperature

    1st-15th: 6.9c
    16th-20th: 7.2c

    Sunshine

    1st-15th: 58 hours
16th-20th: 33 hours (already - compared to the first half)

So I think I know what I'm talking 'bout when it has been exceptionally poor here.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,562 ✭✭✭Billcarson

    ^^^^^^^
Second half of the month should make up somewhat from the wetter first half which should balance things out in the end .

I should say if you are already way above your LTA rainfall well clearly it will go down as a very wet month. But the number of wet days is what also should be considered. So a very wet first half for your location and a much drier second half doesnt seem exceptionally bad to me OVERALL.

This has been the best day in a long while!

I'm getting excited now and the possibility of something exceptional that could be remembered years from now!
I'm not interested in summer in April and when did an Irish summer ever begin in April anyway?
-7.7c (Markree, Sligo, 15-4-1892) is the one to beat. ;)

A question that has been on my mind, has been 2016 been as windy as 2015 or even windier?

    Here are my record positions

    2015

January - third windiest in my records
February - sixth windiest in my records
March - fourth windiest in my records
April - sixth calmest in my records
May - fourth windiest in my records
June - second windiest in my records
July - third windiest in my records
August - fourth windiest in my records
    September - pretty average
October - third calmest in my records
November - third windiest in my records
December - second windiest in my records

    2016

January - fourth windiest in my records
February - fourth windiest in my records
    March - pretty average
April - sixth windiest in my records

^ Well it has been a very windy start to the year and is actually kind of along the line as 2015. Springs meanwhile

2015 - fourth windiest in my records
2016 so far - ninth windiest in my records (nothing remarkable)

April 2007 and April 2011 is when an Irish summer began in April. Plus NO NO NO, I'm not getting excited. Me want warmth. It's not the time of year for that kind of air mass.
