Do you think May 2014 or 2016 was/is better?

We had nearly 140mm of rain in Castlebar in 2014 and a lower mean temperature, of course things could change in the next two weeks, but 2016 has been far better so far.

In terms of temperature wise, 2014 and 2016 have been quite comparable so far actually here at Grange.

    May 2014: 11.4c
    May 2016 so far: 11.6c

And of course, May 2014 was the dullest May on record in many places beating 1999 in those places. It feels like 2015 was duller though!

I have to go as far back to 2008 to get a mean like 13.2c in May when I had 13.9c, my warmest May on record. Man this really shows how May stinks since then (2010 exception and MAYBE this year... just maybe).

Taking the national mean into account, we are on par with 2011 for the first half of the month with the mean temp on currently on 11.8c, just as it was in the first half of 2011. This value is 2.2c higher than for the same period in 2015.

Next week is looking fairly warm and mixed. There are two possible scenarios

    - Ridge building to the east and lows pushing across the country from time to time (much more certain)
    - High pressure pushing northwards from the continent

But even if it stays unsettled, as Tomasz Schafernaker on BBC said,

    "At least it's not cold"

Dark cold windy here rain on and off. The few good nights we got last week starting to disappear rapidly.

That low pressure system on Saturday looks alot more intense on the latest bbc weather forecast especially for west/northwest ireland...

Somebody mentioned a story in tabloids about (another) heatwave next week. Is there any substance at all for these claims?

Yeah if we get even 20c this week, they'd call that a fecking heatwave. NO there's no heatwave.

It said on bbc weather the weather dosn't look like it will be settled now for next week especially in north west (ireland/scotland) but they did say signs are that it might become more settled at the end of this month

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,615 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

The BBC are making Saturday's low look something more like you would see in November - pretty similar to the one on November 21, 2009 actually .

Saturday certainly looks like the worst day in the next week, Friday won't be lovely though either. Still think there's going to be a decent amount of sunshine in Dublin, and the temps are pretty high, so it won't feel too depressing. Winds are going to be ****e though!
