It is well known that north Africa was once verdant and well-watered, as is most of the sub-Saharan part of the continent. But what was this now-arid zone like when apes made their first appearance?

According to the article about early gorilla fossils, there is no sure evidence of sub-Saharan mammals from 8-9 million B.C. Would some climatic element have been responsible for that?
