Needs a bit of luck now Harrington but can't see him getting that shot to force a playoff.

    C'mon Paddy!!!

That chip was inches from going in, perfect line. It's all over unless he can hole his second shot on the par 4 last. Terrific effort.

I see that the Race to Dubai rankings have been updated and Padraig's winnings from today have not been included. I presume this is because he got an invitation to the tournament rather than qualifying from his RTD ranking?

Great performance by Padraig. He'll be disappointed not to win it, but he's right back up there just now. Let's hope he can carry that form forward, win a couple and maybe qualify gain for next year's Ryder Cup!

Didn't see much of it - but was looking at scores , he was making plenty of birds - meaning he was putting well.

That means he was scoring in an area he hasn't been. If that is a real change for Padraig - it is a game changer for him.

But one week doesn't make any certainty about that.

    But great to see.

He's shown enough signs over the last year or two that he's still got a lot of good golf in the tank. He was flushing it from the tee today and his putting/short game looked great. Injury stifled him recently enough so if he gets a free run at it I see no reason why he can't do very good things on the European tour next year.

Not being in the WGC's and 2 of the majors will be a big hindrance to getting into the RC, but so far so good.

Early days - but there are other ways into the majors if he has a good season ?

    Looked it up

Yes will be hard to get into masters - not impossible but win in US.

They are included. He only made three other cuts on the EP this year.

    European Tour....

The results don't seem to be included. The total of 311,005 is the sum of everything excluding the Turkish open. He won over 500k from just Turkey and the Scottish Open where he was 4th. I was thinking it was something to do with the invite also but that was a wild guess.

A total including Turkey would have him at 60th in the rankings.

You'd have to assume they are not included. Would be pretty farcical to have him eliminated from the RTD tournament, get a sponsor invite and allow those points to count. That would be pretty unfair on the lesser known people.

Thats weird. It shouldn't matter on what basis a player is in the field. McIlroy got his first European Tour card from a good finish at the Dunhill Links - where he was an invitee.

Top 70 RTD players qualified for it. In other words, anyone outside of the top 70 is eliminated from the RTD. It would seem very unfair on the 71st person if Harrington was able to gain an invite through his name and allow money earned to count towards that competition thus allowing him to compete for the prize.

Naturally, the money still counts towards Ryder Cup, European Tour card etc. Just not included in RTD calculations.

He's at the Nedbank next week. Any money earned doesn't count towards the RTD (obviously).

Why were his Scottish Open winnings excluded?

There weren't excluded. The point being made was that his total earnings of €311k could not include Turkey as he won over €500k between Turkey and the Scottish Open.

I read even before the competition that however he did wouldn't count towards the race to Dubai because he was on a sponsors invite but that he was targeting a good finish in a tournament he obviously fancied to do well in as defending champion for world ranking and Ryder cup points....he did well on both counts...open and shut case to me, points didn't count...simple...

On a side topic, did they change the format or status of the tournament? Was a reduced field and rose seem to get a massive winners cheque...about 900k I think? If I recall, paddy "only" got about 300k last year for winning which is about what he got for being 4th this year...does that sound right?

    He wasn't the defending champion.

He won in Portugal last year. This was Turkey.

Surely the unfairness applies equally to anyone chasing a Tour Card - which affects far more players than the RTD.

Well, that's tournament invitations for you!!!! They are not based on fairness. Same on PGA; get an invite, win comp = 2 year exemption.

If Harrington had won on Sunday would it have gained him an exemption? Presumably not.

    For the European Tour, yes.

Not to this years R2D standings, as he is eliminated from that already. But they do count towards Ryder Cup & OWGR

The rankings on the ET website are titled "Race to Dubai" but go all the way down to 250 or so and show those inside the top 100 who get cards for next year.

Harrington is listed as having won €311,000 which ranks him at 117. Without exemptions from other criteria, that would leave him without a card. The €311,000 does not included his winnings in Turkey.

So is this the official rankings or not? Are there other cases where players won money on invitations that is not shown on the RTD rankings but counts towards their card?

Is there another ranking for that purpose?

Does he not have a 10 year exemption for winning the open in 08 which runs out next year?

Yes, I know but the point is that we have a player who won €296,000 that has not been included in his total for the rankings. If it happened to someone without such an exemption, would he miss out on his card?

Don't know much about this whole race to Dubai thing but was this an out of regular season event though? The Rolex series is it? There was a reduced field so I assume the top whatever qualifies plus a few invites, one of which was paddy....couldn't be ar$ed looking it up...so if this was an out of season event as part of the end series, then it would make sense that his earnings don't qualify for the race to Dubai. But maybe if it was part of the regular season it would? Just guessing here....
