Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    To be fair.

If you charge 3 times a week for free, we are talking €250 per year. Of course it makes a difference.

And even if it didn't make much of a difference, and if the new EV owner would have to go out of their way to charge for free and waste his time waiting for his car to charge, there are much nicer ways to try and explain that to him than people here have done.

Save €250 in order to spend 3 entire days of your life waiting at a public charger. Talk about miserly behaviour!

Is that what we're supposed to do? I've been doing it wrong so. I park in the local town car park, plug in to the post, then my wife and I go for a leisurely stroll down the main street and have lunch. We come back to the car nearly fully charged. Oh and we save the parking charges too. :D

I'll pay you €500 a year to keep my car fully charged.
    €250 a year is nothing.
Relevant to the price of these cars it's nothing.

I just spent that on a type 2 extension cable.

Thanks Unkel. I’ve tried always to be polite and acknowledge any info/advice given by yourself and other experienced EV drivers. As for aggressive, yes that came not from myself.
For clarity, I DO know how inexpensive & convenient home charging is. I’m not yet an EV owner (due to shortage of Ioniq/Leaf) and am tied into my electricity supplier u til next January and paying 15.33 per KW with no night rate. Yes still hugely better than Petrol in my Prius and free public charging isn’t going to make anything other than a tiny nominal difference other than adding something to the credit side of a hefty financial EV outlay that for the record I can comfortably afford.
Thanks to all who have been so helpful and apologies to those who find my post worthy of aggression in response.

    Back to Ioniqs

I requested my grant for the home charger install yesterday and collected my Ioniq last night.
First day.. 100km covered just tootling about. No need to charge last night, covered the 70 odd km with ease at 120km/h this morning into work. Only 1 other EV using 1 of the 4 spots so I plugged in.

The advice to avoid EV's without non-public charging is going to become out-dated very quickly.

A Kona 64kWh will give you 400km of range, average annual driving distance in Ireland is 17,000km or 326km per week.
That means for well over 50% of the population, one public charge a week is enough to cover their needs.

We had the Ioniq for 9 months before our home charge was fitted, we live in an area with 4 CCS FCPs in a 20km area. For ourselves, we needed to charge every 3rd day or 4th day in the summer.
    Times are changing.

One thing, I would warn about is that surviving on the public FCP network is more expensive than you think. We were spending €20 per week on Coffee/McDonalds whilst sitting at FCPs, compared to the €6 a week we now use to charge at home.

That marks the last time I write a message on my phone. Last time I posted this it made Zero sence.

Anyone suggest a roof rack or a bike rack for the IONIQ. They do exist out there in the big bad world. I was wondering did anyone have any experience with them or where to buy them? Thanks.

That’s a good idea, never thought if that. From previous posts I picked up that the home chargers can’t be decided until you know what type of EV will be on the other end. As still waiting to see which becomes available first, Ioniq or Leaf I’m on hold currently.
With a 9-month wait for installation of home charger which because of the associated grant, I think can’t be ordered (?) until the car purchase is done, I might as well see if I can go into night rate now with existing electric supplier.
    Thanks again 👍

For the new leaf or the Ioniq you can get the same charger (Tethered type 2)

Just make sure your charger is 32A. It will charge Ioniq (28kWh) from empty to full in about 4 hours. Leaf (40kWh) in about 6 hours.

What do you mean a 9 month wait for home charger install? Any electrician can install one, it's the same as installing any outside waterproof socket. I had mine installed before I got my car, and that was under the old scheme, where the installation was free, but I could only use one supplier.

I've requested my letter of approval and contacted Nigel Daly already for a quote
We've an Ioniq and (soon) another EV perhaps an older leaf. But will make sure it's also 32a/7kW capable.
I'll have to get an untethered unit as the older leafs are type 1 and the Ioniq is type 2

But 32a is the most important as it allows relatively fast charging at home. With a 16a post you'll be waiting 8-12 hours.

Our 9 month wait was due to a complicated install with on-street private parking, and the cable ran under the pavement to a pedestal.

Normally you'd be looking at a 2 week wait, and could use granny charging on your driveway.

Can you share what was the delay?
I'm in a similar position myself. Assigned parking spot in a complex.
Now it's only about 15 foot from my meter to the spot.

Wow that must have been a pain. Thanks for that - 2 week’s I can hack - it’s the ongoing stalling by my local Nissan sales guy and the increasingly rare Ioniq that’s holding me back now. Many thanks 👍

    Here you go, https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=104941705#post104941705

Probably could of made it go faster and pay slightly less now.
Nigel Daly has introduced metal poles for holding the standard rolec charges.

I would love the EO Mini on a small pole. Would look very neat.

Firstly congrats to all for a great thread & I'm hoping to buy an ev in 19. Secondly what happens when you pull into a fcp but find all points are being used and one car has completed their charge but the owner had gone off for lunch or a walk as an earlier poster stated and abandoned his car with people waiting.

the Ioniq disconnects (ends the charge session) at 94%. I believe in that situation it is safe to just unplug the cable from the abandoned car and plug yours to start charging, the only problem might be the cable length...

how do you know what % the other car is at on a fast charger? Is it displayed on the charger itself somewhere?

  • Registered Users Posts: 111 ✭✭jeremy_g

as said, the car disconnects/ends the charge session at 94% -- no blue led lights blinking -- otherwise most of the quick/fast chargers will display the state and time charging

600 km done on my first weekend with the car.
Coming from the leaf, the GOM is super accurate!
And, the difference in fast charging speed is phenomenal. I was charging at an indicated 52kW all the way to about 75%. Exponentially better than my leaf, it's a completely different experience. I drove from south wexford with 100% to Navan fast charger with no range anxiety at all, motorway speeds and the cold AC on the whole way.

If you're an Ioniq driver you will not be able to charge in the right-side bay if someone is parked in the left.
The cable disconnects from the ioniq at 94% as this is when the session stops.
CCS2 is supposed to lock the cable to the car as per type2 protocol but it's a mixed bag. The i3 locks to the car, but the ioniq does not. Obviously its better that it doesnt!

    Glad you like your Ioniq!

It ain't no Tesla, but it really is a pretty damn good car for the money :)

Do you mind sharing the distance of that journey, weather conditions, time of day, how much battery/range you had left on arrival, etc.

The reason I ask is because I'm beginning to think I'm getting less range that most people here.

    Where was your starting point?

You will, but you have to park in a slightly unusual way - horizontally, taking up about 3 parking spaces. I've done it several times :p

Not that it matters much, as only one car can charge at a FCP anyway. If there's a Leaf in the left bay, you'll have to wait.

It very much depends on the conditions and your driving style. If you take it handy on motorways (in good weather) and let the car coast, your range will be enormous. If you set it to adaptive cruise at 130km/h (125km/h real speed), you won't see much more than 160km even in summer

    Yeah, that's my rationale too.
It's the best non Tesla EV out there currently for the money(Although I do expect this to be eclipsed by the Kona, depending on price point).

I wanted a model S but couldnt make the figures work, my max was 40-42k all in and I couldnt get one below that. Oh well, on to the model 3 in 2020!

I didn't take precise notes (very unlike me!) but it was 180km from where I left in wexford (relative's house, rural location, south of Ferns). Arrived with no range anxiety, possibly 14% left, from memory?

It was the late evening, we arrived in Navan around 8.00-8.30 or so. Weather was good, ambient temperatures around 15 degrees and no rain.
I could have easily done 200km or more on that trip.

If the IOniq had a Tesla badge they'd be big news.
When I saw the first few video reviews of the Ioniq , along with some of the real world views here on boards , I then decided to get rid of my cheap 2015 experimental Leaf, as it didn't seem to be at the races efficiency wise, compared to the Ioniq.

However I see somebody seems to have traded in a lovely Ioniq into Windsor Belgard , presumably for p a Leaf 2 , bad decision methinks.

    That's a hybrid :p

    Linky

I doubt anybody would trade in their Ioniq EV for a L40...

Only 1138 Ioniq EVs sold worldwide in April, it's the first sign of the battery shortage we've been hearing about.

Hyundai originally planned 1200 cars a month, in September last year they increased this to 1800 per month. Looks like the numbers are back to the original target for April.

What is worst imho is that 50% of all Ioniq EV are kept in South Korea. This severely limits the spread of Ioniqs world wide. The car is well known now throughout the world for its qualities (not so much back in late '16 and very early '17 when you and I bought our cars) and it would sell 10 times, maybe 100 times of current production figures. At full RRP, or even more.

Hyundai is already the mass car manufacturer with the second highest margin per car (after BMW). I actually invested some money in Hyundai a month ago or so, but I cashed in after a very quick 15% rise in stock value within a week and a bit or so.

Spotted my first Ioniq hybrid on the road last night and I'm nearly sure it was a plug in, though I know these are rare. I could be wrong. It had a hatch at the front passenger side adjacent to the BlueDrive badge which I thought was an odd placement given the fully electric has it at rear passenger side. Any idea if that's the plugin or plain hybrid?

The PHEV has that plug on the wing, the BEV and non plugin HEV don't

So it was definitely the PHEV

Great thanks. It was a couple of cars ahead of me in traffic so I could only get a glimpse of the back end to see Plugin on the back, had a good look at the passenger side when they went into a filter lane to turn right and I drove on though :D It was the light grey/milky silver colour, it looked great.

230km range shown on the dash today after charging this afternoon. That's a first for me :)

Heavy foot as always, sports mode only, but I guess I've done very little motorway driving over the past few days (just N4 to N3 and back on the M50 a few times)

228km for me this morning. Hoping to get back to last years high of 248km.
