I'm an Irish contractor working in the UK under an umbrella company. Under the umbrella I can write off a number of expenses including accommodation (property in my name in Ireland), travel to and from work and food. A number of other expenses can be written off such as airline ticket to and from Ireland (permanent place of residence).

Just recently I have secured a pay rise but need to find some way to try and reduce my tax bill. Can anyone suggest other things to write off so to speak. I was thinking about pension contributions, software such as mobile phone and iPad which can be classed as necessary items for work.

Is this the best way to do this under the umbrella or would anyone suggest perhaps setting up a limited company?

Any suggestions would be great.
