    Smithwick's.

Anyone who drinks Heineken and Budweiser needs to have a look at their life.

Corrs light is even worse. That's single dad territory right there.

Nothing worse with people sneering others for what they drink...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,521 ✭✭✭✭mansize

    Really?
So they should drink something they don't enjoy the taste if when there is an alternative in front of them.
Should I drink heino or Guinness just so I don't have people like you sneering at me?

If there is a blond beer or a Weiss beer there next to the carlsberg, I'll be having a pint of that.

Nothing wrong with 'craft' beers. Just becuase you don't like a few dosent mean you can be all superior.
I don't like onions so I don't ask for them.

The beer snobs are well and truly out in force in this thread.

I drink Budweiser because I like it. Who cares if you don't?

People have different tastes. Shock horror.

That's one of my pet hates, absolutely can't stand people who look down on other's taste just because their own tastes are more "refined" or "cultured".

If I'm enjoying a nice bottle or two at home, I'll always go out of my way to try some highly-rates craft beers, but if I'm off on a night out, you better believe I'm swilling cheap tack all night, and there's not a thing wrong with that.

    Anyway, top 5:

    Rochefort 10
    Of Foam and Fury
    Sierra Nevada Torpedo
    Leann Folláin
And a perfectly pulled pint of Special (Smithwicks with a Guinness head for those who haven't heard of it)

I don't think its snobbish to like something different from the usual,I drink miller and coors in my local on a Saturday night as thats all they have that I like. But their not my favourite.I drank nearly every beer mentioned so far over the years, including bud for two years when it first came out.
But if I have the choice and the money ,which I always don't ,then I will pick the good stuff.

Plenty of them drinkers of the big brand. Notice at what group the first couple of digs in the thread were aimed. You don't have to drink craft beer to be a beer snob. Staunch Guinness drinkers are the worst of the lot, imo.

Agree with the poster who said if all the beers are served cold and you've had a few drinks already there isn't that much of a difference in the taste. Would normally drink Coors or Heineken myself as they are on sale in pretty much every pub/off licence in the country so it's a handy one to order, a lot in here seem to hate Desperados but I think a few cold bottles are lovely. Have tried a few others such as Blue Moon, Cute Hoor, Creans.. They're all nice beers but I wouldn't think they're nice enough to justify paying an extra euro or so for each pint. If I'm going to Lidl I would buy Tyskie as I think they're a nice beer in large bottles.

Would drink pretty much any beer that was given to me to be honest so I'm not that fussy, Carlsberg is probably the only one I can think of that I wouldn't drink.

Carlsberg is a horrible tasting beer.
    As are many other mainstream
    Beers.

I was at the Alltech craft beer festival in the convention center two weeks ago.

It was a great way to sample 1/2 pints of great beers and ciders

It's not just taste anymore for me.the big larger brands leave my stomach very acidic.feel way more rough the day after a night on bud vs a night on guiness.

    Way more acidic than what?

Your stomach is already a very acidic environment with an average pH of 2.

I don't get all the hate for craft beer drinkers . I enjoy my craft beer & it's not so I can lord it over anyone, it's just that I want some verity in my beer & not be constantly served the same boring five beers . It's like hating someone for wanting a Chinese or an Indian instead of bacon & cabbage or stew .

Its not the drinking of craft beer that causes me issues, its the attitude of some people that drink craft beers.

The whole "oh I don't drink that mass produced slop" as if they are suddenly some kind of connoisseur because they drink something that was brewed in a hippies welly.

Its wankerism of the highest calibre.

Anyway, on topic, Guinness is my drink of choice. I find if I drink anything carbonated I feel terribly bloated after 2 or 3 pints. On the rare occasion I'm in a pub that doesn't sell Guinness I'd have Beamish or Murphys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,182 ✭✭✭nyarlothothep

So many to choose from but here are the best ones imo.
    1. Old Dominion Oak Barrel Stout: I like how the flavours dance on my palette
    2. St Stephanus: Same reason
    3. Chimay Red, Blue, Gold and White: a wonderful allrounder
    4. Straff Hendrik: Powerful and robust, not to be denied.
    5. Erdinger Blonde and Ruby: A good staple beer.

I'd also include Delirium Noctorum but since someone has already mentioned this fine beer I will not include it here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,342 ✭✭✭Filmer Paradise

    1. Moose Drool

    2. Donkey Slobber

    3. Ass gravy

    4. Aberdeen Angus Cow Piss

    5. Warble Fly

Only one of the above is real & I had a few bottles of it once.

Mainly Hino & Guinness for me.

    Sorry to be boring.

The anti-craft beer issues always seem to be a bit fake to me. It seems to be that people have a stereotypical image and are happy to hide behind it.

I drink craft beers primarily because I prefer the taste and there's more variety. Becks recently brought out an IPA and while it's nice, it's simply not a patch on any of the others I've tried.

In Dublin, you go into any pub and it's a mostly a combination of Millers, Carlsberg, Bud, Heiniken or Guinness. I've no issue with Guinness - I just don't like the taste - but at least it's different to the others. If you put the others in front of me without lables, I'd struggle to tell one from the other Apart from Bud, which always felt a little bit more watered-down to me. They simply don't taste as nice as the craft beers I've tried.

That said, having lived in Germnay for a few years, you can't really not feel a bit restricted with the choices back home.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

    In no particular order:

    Peroni
    Guinness
    Spaten
    Tyskie
    Duvel

In Ireland, there are a few Polish beers are worth a try:
    Zywiec
    Tyskie
    Tatra

Not a big home drinker. Happily my local has a reasonable selection of different stuff.

Particular favourites are Hersbrucker , Sierra Nevada , Sierra Neveda Torpedo and Lagunitas.

I enjoy most IPAs with a strong flavour.

However, the best beer I have ever tasted was in a bar in Lexington Massachussetts. Rapscallion Honey Ale was the name of it. Only available locally unfortunately.

And who's denying Straff Hendrik and could you specify what it's doing to challenge this?

    Sierra Nevada
    Brewdog Punk IPA
Camden Town Brewery Camden Pale Ale
Deschutes Brewery Mirror Pond Pale Ale
    Old Crafty Hen

Haven't had a real beer in around 8 months though, so honourable mentions need to go to Erdinger Alkoholfrei and Brewdog Nanny State.

    Schneiderweiss Tap 6
    Grevensteiner
    Guinness
    St. Bernadus Abt 12
    White Gypsy Dunkel

The White Gypsy Dunkel was on cask in Alfies (a pub in Dublin run by the Galway Bay Brewery folks) and it was top stuff. Had 2 pints after work and then went back for more a few days later and they had run out. The chap said it was a limited brew and may not be available again. Great great beer

It's too expensive to drink the good stuff here. €10 for 4 bottles of any good beer minimum. When I was in Canada it was $13 roughly for most 6 packs from small independent breweries, all 500mls. This is with minimum pricing on alcohol in effect. I don't understand the pricing here, I can get 8 Tuborg for €10 but if I want the same amount of anything good it's €20 minimum. Every other country I've been in has better prices for the majority of alcohol than Ireland. Ok I've not been in Paris or the likes but even Berlin and Vienna are cheaper despite being more affluent than us.

Berlin and Vienna are not more affluent.
Irish taxes on income are low, medical care is free, taxes on property and water almost non existant, so the disposable income of someone on the average industrial wage is about €500 more per month in Ireland than in say Germany

When people are basically gifted €500 each of spending money more than you have in Germany, then naturally prices in Ireland will be higher as folks actually have more money to spend.

Sure even the dole is double the amount in Ireland than Germany.
And even pensioners in Ireland are on the pigs back, with a gigantic tax free allowance on private pensions, and then a raft of allowances that you could only dream of abroad

anyhow, Ireland is more than affluent enough to justify the exorbitant beer prices and from unemployed to pensioners, the cash is there to pay for it.

I drank it years ago and actually enjoyed it but I can't stress how bad it was earlier. I struggled through 3 cans and gave up and done beer run number 2 and I'm now enjoying a few Sierra Nevada Pale Ales.

Such a difference it's unreal, although twice the price but it's worth it in my opinion
