Why do we even bother having a hospital in sligo?. My GP is referring me to a urologist for tests. There is a urology department in sligo general hospital (or whatever its called these days) but I am being referred to Galway hospital, because apparently it's a shorter waiting list and that I will get better results from Galway hospital. So even though I live in sligo and they have a urology department in sligo hospital I have to travel all the way to Galway. And then I suppose if I do need to have something done or more tests I will have to go over there again!

Oh, quit your griping. Shorter waiting list and better results? What in the blazes are you complaining about? We have a hospital in Sligo because we need one here. You should be complaining that the Sligo area isn't being treated fairly. By the way, I am also seeing a specialist in Galway, and the Sligo hospital staff have been champions about coordinating with them. Look on the bright side. You could always have to put up with the American health system, like I did until two years ago.

I am highlighting the fact that I live in Sligo - yet I am being referred to Galway, when I could be easily seen in Sligo General who has the same department - whats your problem?

Oh, I guess I'm just so happy to have access to halfway decent care for once that I don't have time to bitch that I have to drive to where I get it.

Having a department is one thing. Having a specialist is quite another. They have Urology specialists in galway. They don't in Sligo - Simple as

    Would you still prefer Sligo?

Only in Ireland would they grant a hospital 'University Hospital' status, without the accompanying funding or facilities to reflect it. It's nothing but a complete insult to the general public living within the catchment area.

ah, OK - wasnt aware of that I must admit. I just assumed there was a Consultant in the Sligo Hospital , especially as there is a department there

One of the urologists visits from Galway a few times a month to help clear the long waiting lists afaik.

I had my appointment with the urologist in Sligo just before christmas. It just took few mins. I had to wait 18 months for it though. Have to back again but I don't know how long I will have to wait for the next appointment. So with the waiting times so long, you are prob better off going to Galway.

I wonder then if I go to consultant in Galway, that every future appointment/follow up appointment (or surgery if needed) would mean I would have to travel to Galway each time then?, like if you get seen in Galway then you cant be seen in Sligo any more once youve attended Galway, if you know what I mean? - I suppose I should have checked with the doc.

They refer a lot of people to Galway yet Galway can not cope with the volumes of people attending, look at the cancer services for example!! I was waiting for a out patients surgical appointment in Sligo and was waiting for over 12 months, I got a letter saying that I could attend the same appointment in Hollywood Co. Down!!!
