I work in IT, I don't define myself as an "IT Person" - I love history, politics and debating, all things which you can find in After Hours. Most of my life I've spent working outside the Technology Sector - if you work in McDonalds would that make you a "Hamburger person" out of interest? :-D

Good point. Among my interests are history, some politics, aviation and chess. IT for me is a job, not a hobby.

Funny as well that IT people are like I work in IT blah blah and I have a iPhone blah blah. Probably loads of people here with cool jobs who are too cool to say what they do unlike IT people.

The profession does have some relevance in this thread, though, since sometimes the IT person is only able to access Boards from work because they're an IT person. Boards isn't blocked where I work, so I don't need to "run a bypass" on the firewall. (I did unblock Netflix for the receptionists over the Christmas holidays, when they were the only ones who were going to be in the building... :) )

Someone sounds salty about IT, bad experience with the local techie? Did they ignore a ticket you submitted?

I work in IT too, we're all here because we're on top of everything..............or hiding from our problems :pac:

I've said it before, but... a Renaissance Nerd should be well-able to Nerd about a variety of subjects, not just complex computer/engineering stuff.

The modern Nerd should be able to hack on computers, household electrics, car-servicing/basic repair, infant excrement-management, maritime navigation, bawling-child plamásery, truck-driving, Kenjutsu, dressing, table-manners, decent port and/or brandy, Ulster Fry cookery hi, and pint-lofting. Specialisation is for insects and sterotypes are for the school-yard. :D

I'm in a 5-star hotel in Riyadh on a business trip. I finished a customer meeting earlier and am waiting to fly home tomorrow morning. Ordered a fillet steak, fries and a banana split half an hour ago on the company's expense. I'll send a few follow-up emails later and then spend the rest of the evening watching YouTube videos and Skyping with my wife. Around 30% of my work is like this.

When I posted my frustrations about the IT profession in a thread here last year I was subjected to prolonged and nasty abuse.

Yet here we have people who work in IT boasting about slacking off work. This is a profession that doesn't have a good reputation amongst those of us who work in the core profit generating parts of an organisation. I'd humbly suggest that more time is spent making IT systems cost effective and reliable in the way electricity, telephony and other utility services are provided to us, instead of arsing around on the Internet.

It's a damning indictment of a profession that still sees itself as being innovative, when in reality it's rapidly approaching middle age and not exactly excelling in even getting the fundamentals right.

I have a walkie talkie and I wear a throat mic so I look like a secret service person.

I'm only rostered to work Fridays and Saturdays at the moment. I have other work to do but I can do it any time as long as it gets done, so that's a lie in every day of the week.

You mightn't have to worry about it much longer. My brother is over in Wall Street replacing cocaine-snorting Gordon Gecko wannabes with KDB analytics systems and a few (short) scripts. :D

I work 9 to 5 hours but have to come in late to a customer site as I am under pressure . I am as we speak temperature mapping an oven at 250 degrees. I am on boards until the temperature profile stabilises and them Im out the gap.

IT tried to block a heap of stuff there a few years ago like boards, facebook etc. There was uproar and they had to undo it all again. Think they took it upon themselves as even the bosses didn't agree and thought it was bad for staff morale etc to have such a nanny system in place. If people are getting the work done then who cares if you go on boards or facebook for a while everyday.

It likely had nothing to do with being a nanny system, some social media applications carry the highest security risk.

We have facebook blocked for most users, because unfortunately a lot of people are stupid and will start clicking on all sorts of links that pop up in their feed. Not because they're not allowed to look at facebook. They can do that on their phones on the free wifi no bother.

Sounds like its the stupid people that are the highest security risk. Maybe get rid of them so the sensible people can still have it all.

No because they were still allowing people have 30 mins per day on on sites on the ban list so I doubt it was a security thing.

Anyway they undid it all after no more than a few weeks, all that's blocked now is gambling or the other obvious things you aren't going to go into at work :P. In fact the blocking software ended up being less sensitive after than before and I can get into some websites that were being blocked before due to their topic being betting related but not actually betting sites themselves.

No, not at work. It's currently 21:24, 26 degrees and i'm sweating the arse off myself just lying down.

Will be working again tomorrow, but Im in a call centre at a really busy time of the year so i'm lucky if I get to read three pages of a thread in total in between calls. Sucks monkey balls that you just can't get a minute to switch off, even just to talk shyte with your colleagues, more so than being able to do nothing. Will not be getting a permanent job in a call centre any time ever.
