Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm on my phone Boo so I can't send you any links but if you google Pat Ogden you might find some interesting insights. She specialises in trauma. Also Babette Rothschild is another one.
I have a few infographics on complex trauma which are also useful. They are saved to my pinterest but I'm sure Google will point you in their direction.

    Remember knowledge is power :)

Thank you Persepoly, I shall google them.
I have never heard of complex trauma, only the shell-shocked-soldier kind, and thats not me, so will have to do a bit of research on complex kind....I didn't know it could be on pinterest, coooool, will do a search there too. Thanks again.

Turtle, well done on your staying power, i've just been given the all clear to return to work and despite being off work very irritating i'm now scared of returning, hoping you have better days ahead.

Is there any end to this absolute s***e?? I just can't get it together to get well, i am literally just going through the motions of life. I had my clinic appointment last week and they applauded me on how well i'm doing being back to work, keeping it together etc. Right now I am sitting at the desk in work trying to hold back the tears & I don't know why, I feel blank inside like I'm stuck and can't move forward make plans or just do anything. Even simple things like going for a walk feels like a mammoth task. I'm in a what's app group with my friends, there's four of us on there and every time a message comes through I just want to scream and again...I don't know why. Excuse the self pitying rant, I am just so unbelievably fed up of it all, it just never goes away.

    Hi guys...

Has anyone ever picked a therapist themselves without a referral? I'm lost. No idea how to pick. presume that's the anxiety kicking in about getting it wrong but seriously. I haven't gotten beyond a look on google. Would really appreciate any tips

Have a look at IAHIP website and also IACP. They are the accrediting bodies and will have a directory by county of reputable psychotherapists.

Then it's a case of ringing around. Some may have websites which will give you a good insight in to their approach. Chances are you will need to see more than one initially as you search for the right "fit". The first session should tell you whether or not you feel you can work with that particular therapist.

Best of luck to you :)

Edited to add; another way would be to contact a therapy centre. So basically a clinic offering different types of therapies, CBT, psychoanalysis, etc. Expect to pay at least €50 but some practitioners will negotiate. There are those who charge €80/90 but they are at the top of their game with years of experience behind them.

If you find the right therapist it will be the best money you ever spend. I've been there myself :)

Thanks, just a bit at sea about it. Burned through a few before before I found one I could talk to but they were all referral type things. Now I've to decide for myself my perfectionism (something I need to deal with) is running wild.
It'd be funny if it wasn't such a pain.

Accredited is definitely a thing I want, yeah. It's just so hard... There's so much information on how to do this but at the same time almost like there's none on how to say "okay I'll try this one". Sorry, total verbal overload.

Yes. I've done this. Way I tried it was to make appointments with 3 possibilities and asked them to talk not about how me really (aside from giving them my story outline) but how they would treat, what they'd suggest regarding appointment frequency and typically how long they might expect us to work together.

Based my decision on the overall feeling I had after meeting each.

Down side to this is you're effectively paying for a few sessions which aren't treatment per say and there's still no guarantee of picking the best one.

Well done on going back. Pain is a horrible thing.

Can you get out for a walk at all? It's a lovely day out. Good vibes going your way

Gremlinertia, I've only seen this part of the thread

Apart from going for a walk and getting fresh air?

Whats your lifestyle like, food drink etc?

What else do you do for yourself? Exercise, binaural beats, holistic treatments, counselling, etc

Having a bit of a downer at the moment, sort of out of the blue. Was out at the shops in a relatively good mood, came back and the gas alarm was going off in the apartment. Was fairly sure it was a false reading as there was no gas smell and the gas hasn't been on. The gas people came and he thought the same thing but it turns out there is a leak. This is the second leak in two months. This is a fairly new apartment so I'm surprised. I'm feeling down and don't feel particularly safe or able to relax. I am renting and only just moved in at the start of December and to be honest it has me thinking about moving out, although my lease is not up till December. They fixed the gas leak before and this is a different one but it doesn't fill me with confidence.

I moved here in the hopes of starting over and cutting my daily commute but this has me feeling uncomfortable again. I also bought a bike this morning and feel a bit stupid now as it's like I should have waited and it was as if I'm tempting fate by doing so and thinking things would work out.

Am trying not to make any knee jerk decisions but I'm not happy.

Its not easy I was in a similar situation with my apt block before Xmas, gas leak and all Bord Gais did was leave leaflets for us to call them at 2am in the morning, I chased it for peace of mind. And it was fine in the end.

Put it this way you have recorded it so there is a full tracking of whats happened, they made a site visit (they don't this for the sake of it) , you mention it was twice in the past few months. Have you involved management company\landlord with your concerns. All we can do is enquire professionally and then get on with things.

I don't mean just get on with things in a glib way, just that once everyone is aware who should be aware, ie the main stakeholders, bord gais, mgmt company ,landlord, thats all you can really do. We can't fully protect ourselves 100% as much as we would like to do.

For me i made a complaint to mgmt company as i felt that was in their remit, I don't think I should be chasing utility providers when they could be doing it and it worked out fine in the end. Best of luck with it, do something you enjoy for the evening, reward yourself, you've done well. We can't know everything don't be too hard on yourself :)

Hi all, I'm new to the thread and sort of don't feel like I have a right to be here after reading what some of you have had to deal with.

I'm suffering panic attacks and anxiety. I wish I could just stay in bed and never have to get up.

I feel like I'm looking at life but not taking part in it. I'm scared of almost everything and don't like myself at all. I never used to be like this and I miss 'me'.

    Thanks.

The gas maintenance people showed up and could find no leak even though the main gas supplier said there was a small one. He explained everything to me and demonstrated how there was no leak showing up on the equipment and he checked everywhere in the boiler that can leak gas and the pipes and said he was happy it was safe. The gas alarm I have is not that reliable apparently but that doesn't really explain how our version of bord gais could detect something the gas maintenance couldn't. I also found it weird this alarm went off even when the boiler wasn't on, or the hot water and there was no smell of gas.

Anyway I have another different handheld device that does work and it detected nothing so I will just use it and leave the alarm as I don't fully trust it.

Yeah the letting agent knows all about it. They organised it to be fixed very quickly, was done in about an hour.

Part of me thinks about moving but my lease isn't up till December. Another part says to relax and it's been checked and signed off. I spoke to one of my sister's who said to relax, it's been checked and to enjoy the weekend. Easier said than done.

Try to listen to the part that says relax. A professional has told you everything is as it should be. I know it's not very easy but it would be a real positive to push through.

    Thanks.

It's mad how our brains get obsessive about things and can't think straight.

So true unfortunately. Hopefully you'll be able to put your mind at ease now that it has been given the all clear. :)

    Hi all

Where would I get a list of private psychiatrists in the County Mayo area? Is there a way of finding out if they specialise in certain areas such as children with social anxiety?

    Thanks

See below from a few posts back.
Have a look at IAHIP website and also IACP. They are the accrediting bodies and will have a directory by county of reputable psychotherapists.

Finding their area of focus is best done by calling and asking. Maybe write out your 3-5 key questions beforehand and have them ready when calling. With calls like that it's easy get off the phone having forgotten to ask something.

    Hi

Thanks for reply but looking for a list of psychiatrists as opposed psychotherapists.

    It seems impossible to find!

Your GP should assess you and should refer you in the first instance. They also should have a list of private psychiatrists that they use for referral. If they don't, get another GP.

I am so, so, SO lucky to have the counsellor that I have. It's actually priceless to have someone who understands you inside out and can help you make sense of everything. I spent most of today with her - she doesn't even charge me - and I feel so drained but so much better after it. There are some really really good people in this world. Knowing her restores my faith in humanity!

That's often the case when I visit too.

There really shouldn't be such a variation of the doctors there.

I told this lad some stuff then when he was writing my script he asked a question which clearly exposed the fact he hadn't listened to a word of my biggest stressor ARGH
