    Hi There,

I'm trying to help my Dad out. He's not great with technology but he's looking to get a system with spotify to play music. Not sure on an av reciever or just speakers or both.

    Options:
    • av reciever with wireless speakers (must have spotify)
    • Speakers that have bluetooth or wifi connectivity (must be able to play spotify from phone)
    [*]

if going down the first option (av reciever), I don't think he'd need to super high spec system.
If going down the speaker only option, I'm thinking he'd be better off spending a bit for some quality.

Anyway, what do you think? I hope you can help.

    Cheers,
    Andy

HI Paranoid, thanks for the post

Is it purely for playing music or is he interested in surround sound also?

If just for music, then definitely I'd say to go for something from the Denon Heos system. This is a wireless streaming music system, with sources like Spotify/Tidal/Internet Radio etc. - http://www.denon.co.uk/uk/heos

For a decent Hifi quality system, he should look at the Heos amp - http://www.denon.co.uk/uk/heos-amp -  and adding a pair of decent bookshelf speakers or floorstanding speakers - Something like Monitor Audio Bronze 1 or 2 bookshelf, or Cambridge SX80 floorstanding

If its just for convenience, then the likes of the Heos 1, 3 or 5 make a very good option as a stand alone speaker

This system is also a multiroom system, so if he wanted to, he could add a 2nd/3rd..... room to it and all link together
It is fully controllable from Smart phone/tablet app

Have a look at the above and let me know if you have any other queries

    Regards
    Brian

This is brilliant information, very much appreciated.

Yes it's really for music. I'll look into and share the heos stand alone speakers. I really like the idea of buying and adding speakers for different rooms down the road. Good stuff.

However, is there a lower range av receiver with Spotify capability and the option to buy wireless speakers for both music and picture? Or can wireless speakers be used to sync with picture (hdmi). I'm thinking about delays between sound and picture.

He'll mostly use it for music but I just want to explore the options for using the same system to watch the odd movie with surround sound.

    Thanks again,
    Andy

I have an older Onkyo model to this http://www.richersounds.ie/p-201457-txnr646.aspx
It has spotify connect on it so you can play spotify through it and control it via app on your phone. Very handy.

HI Paranoid, as fuse says above the onkyo 646 would be the entry level that has spotify capability built in, but in theory if you have spotify on your phone/tablet, any amp which has bluetooth should be able to play it for you
