    Hi,

My 04 Mercedes E200 kompressor (1.8L) showing dashboard warning "SERVICE BRAKE VISIT WORKSHOP", I recently did got the new brake pads, new brake sensors & normal service done with local garage. However it appears that SBC brake unit needs some attention so I checked with Merc dealer who said they need to verify if SBC unit needs replacement which apparently can take a month to get the part from Germany.

My NCT is due already, do you think it can still pass the NCT with that dashboard warning? Is is worth trying or not at all? Any similar NCT experiences recently?

    thanks in advance!

I would doubt they would even test it as they would be worried about causing additional damage.

I'd say more or less any light on the dash is a fail. Well, maybe not the wisher washer water empty light ;), but anything vital anyway. How could it not be really?
And its not like the brake system isn't that important. A quick wikipedia search show the SBC is the actual brake system - mixture of electronics and hydraulics - so it doesn't really matter whether the pads are new or not.
When my ABS light was on a couple o years ago it was an immediate fail.

I would say that it's an nct fail for sure.
If your SBC unit is bunched then it's gonna be a very hefty bill.

I would bring it to a Merc Indy Specialist with the proper Star diagnostics to see what the problem really is.
If it is the SBC and you go with replacing it your will have to get the part from MB anyway but get the Indy to fit it as Labour costs will be lower unless MB will do it under some sort of warranty as the SBC is known to fail after a certain amount of brake pedal activations.

The NCT will fail if any of the following warning lights indicate a fault. I'd fully expect the SBC light to fail since it's a more sophisticated variation of ESC, ABS and EBS.
Malfunction indicator for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), antilock brake system (ABS), electronic braking system (EBS), parking brake, tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS), electronic power steering (EPS), or brake fluid warning lamp.

thank you guys for your input.

According to local garage the warning on dashboard is Grey Color which means only for headsup/information (not Red color which is a problem), and dashboard doesn't mention it to be SBC/ABS related issue in particular, so he is confident to get thru NCT.

Of course I would still to fix this thing, but will not need to worry about NCT.

Anyway, I'm also checking with another Merc dealer and see what they say.

    Any more inputs meanwhile?

The grey warning isnt a major problem eg when washer fluid is low etc.

Have you try to clear it by pressing the stalk on the left hand side of the dash?

I had mine in for NCT a few weeks back.
Since I bought the car about 10 months ago, the orange light for replace brake pads is constantly on as the previous owner damaged the sensor wire on the pads.

The display also beeps when the car is run for a few seconds with a red warning to check brakes, but they let it through without any question, as they saw that the brake pads were fine. I was full sure they would have failed it regardless due to the light being on constantly!

Sorry for so late reply here.
thanks guys earlier, just to update for anyone looking in future. Merc dealer refused to cover it under warranty over 10 years and without yearly regular service thru Merc Dealer only. Buying the new one costs 1800€+VAT. One guy from dealer suggested me to contact private garage who may fix for much cheaper. Anyway I had to sell the car at very low price to get rid of the headache.

Shame. While I'm sure you're are aware you can get the NCT done early and get 'credit' for the extra time. Just an FYI as it might prevent someone for getting caught out.
