Swipe from the left side of the screen to the right.

It just goes to a blank blue screen home screen exact same as in pic but without newsstand

Go to settings (swipe down on screen to open a search, and search for settings if the icon has disappeared too) then go general > reset > reset home screen layout, see if that brings them back

Are you typing "settings" into the search bar?

Try rebooting the phone. Hold the home and sleep button together until and apple appears on the screen.

Only thing you can do I think is restore it.

Yep restore in iTunes and put your backup from iTunes or iCloud on there after and hope the issue doesn't return. If it doesn't, might need to set up is a new device.

Sounds like a software issue the phone needs to be restored.
