Ashbourne East Flooding issues

    Folks,

I am sure if you live in the East side of Ashbourne, you are aware of the problems with the stream that runs from Rath Lodge, through Race Hill, Brookville/Huntsgrove, and then onward via Ashewood and Archerstown Wood to eventually join the Broadmeadow by the Golf Club.

On several occasions over the last 15 years, this stream has caused flooding in varying parts of the town, the most recent being November 2014, when a number of houses in Rath Lodge, Huntsgrove, Ashewood and by the Golf Club were flooded, along with business premises on the main Streeet, and a significantly larger number of houses lost their access due to significant flooding in Hunters Lane by the telephone exchange.

Meath County Council have engaged consultants to produce a report on the problems, and their report has now led to a Part 8 Planning application to enable changes to be made to the stream in a number of places.

The plans are on public display in the MCC office at Ashbourne until Feb 11, and can be commented on until March 28th,

As proposed at present, there are a number of shortcomings to the plan that could mean that €500,000 will be spent on the upgrades, but they will still not provide the expected protection to Huntsgrove, Brookville and the newer areas of Ashewood and Archerstown wood, On that basis, I have already commented and rejected the proposals as outlined in the plans on display,

I want to encourage anyone that lives in the areas affected to view the plans, and comment on them, the main worry is that the scheme has incorrect flow rates in the critical areas around Brookville, and no action has been proposed to deal with a sewer (now the responsibility of Irish Water) that restricts the flow in the area behind the Brookville apartments.

If these 2 issues are ignored, the next flood event that has similar magnitudes to the 2014 event will still cause problems in the critical areas mentioned above, and the scheme will fail.

Please, if you are affected, read the plans, and comment, it will only be as a result of people commenting that MCC will have to make changes to the scheme to give it the capacity to deal with abnormal events.

    Thanks

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁
