Is this the thread for the wind? I created one (as per usual a different thread for a different event) but it was locked. Any input from mods?

Why create a different thread for the same storm?

12z NNM showing very similar ppn as per the 6z. Northern coast with an upgrade of the heaviest showers now making it onshore.

    For both now. :)

I did not close your other thread, however, I reckon one thread is sufficient.

Thanks for the response. Going with previous trends I decided to open a new thread as wind and snow are very different things (We had a different threads for the wind and rain aspects of a storm before!)

    Has this been officially named?

Is it likely to be windy in the midlands tomorrow?

Yes, but neither are really that significant in that the high winds are mainly a risk for coastal areas/offshore, and, the snow risk will be more of a nuisance factor. Any snow that falls will be pretty transient.

According to UKMO....MetE named it. Dropping them in it! :P

Dublin's in Ireland isn't it :D So yes, it's under a yellow warning. Don't expect too much.

Very blustery here in West Clare at the moment, although calming after the passing shower.

That is some Wintry forecast for tonight from MetEireann Tonight

Showers will continue tonight and will merge to longer spells of rain, sleet and snow overnight. Accumulations likely, the most over the northern half of the country and over hills and mountains in all areas. Some hail and thunder also with gale force and squally westerly winds, stormy in coastal areas of the west and southwest. Lowest temperatures between zero or minus 1 and plus 3 degrees, risk of icy stretches in sheltered areas most especially in the east and north.
    More

Area of low pressure tracking well off the North Coast but the strongest winds in the Southern two thirds. Could be some big gusts in those squally showers.

    2IDTWhO.png?1

Very wet here overnight and increasing blustery showers this evening with 11.8mm now in the gauge. Bite in the wind at 6.7C, 10 min avg wind speed 23 kph , gust 50 kph here near Tralee.

Those showers coming in off the Atlantic look pretty hefty

Heavy hail and sleet shower here in Galway...unusual for a storm to be coming down from the north-west tonight should be interesting

Sitting here in Donegal Town watching radar too. Heaviest looking radar showers I've seen in a while. Remains to be seen how the travel over land. I'll keep ye posted. Should be hear soon.

    Intense hail here in Castlebar!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,336 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Galway / Clare getting the strongest winds around 4.00/5.00 and peaking a couple of hours later in Kerry. Looks like plenty of strong wind making it well inland in Southern counties for a time early morning.

For someone who doesn't have the vaguest understanding of all this is there any snow likely for Carlow/the South East?

    Cheers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32,688 ✭✭✭✭ytpe2r5bxkn0c1

It seems that the high wind to the south will draw down cold air with snow and ice to the northern half of the county overnight.

I doubt the South East will see much.

That radar image on the previous page gives a much better idea as to the intensity of the showers that new met eireann radar is useless now

I notice ME use a different radar colour code on the RTE forecast (utilising the yellow & red) to the one used on their website which as Hooter23 states, is quite useless with too many similar colours, making the rainfall density near impossible to read. I emailed them about this, but got no reply. :(

south-east meath missing out as well. realistically it will be the usual places that will see any worthwhile lying snow: inland Donegal, Northern Ireland, Cavan and Monaghan.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,336 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Part of tonights weather associated with Jake: the ever increasing spherics moving closer to the NW coast no doubt bringing big squally showers of hail with them.

    That's not correct imo.
The vast majority of the country will see falling snow. Lying snow may be confined to hills further South.
Either way a fast melt tomorrow morning.
Having said that we wait for snow all year so in that regard it should be memorable.
just make sure you get up early

    Squall line

Thats not a squall line as it doesn't have the highest DBZ returns on the leading edge. Still nice though with the odd sferics thrown in.
