Cool wet start here near Tralee having gotten down to 1.9C ( ice on cars further inland ) . Showers in the morning gave way to a fantastic bright sunny afternoon and evening getting up to 10.7C, WNW breeze was cool but it has calmed now. Still plenty of Congestus and Cumulonimbus about so a shower could still happen.

Grange's March 2016 Summary

Cool and sunny with average rainfall.

Rainfall: Average rainfall. Most unremarkable March rainfall wise since 2014
Rainfall total of 46.1mm was exactly average for March (100% of LTA) and it was the most unremarkable March rainfall wise since 2014. This was the first month since July 1990 with exactly average rainfall and itself is the second only occurrence in my records. I recorded 16.7mm of this total on the 26th, a new daily maximum rainfall record which bet the previous of 14.5mm in March 2008. Other than this day, there was no remarkably wet day with all other wet days recording falls of less than 5mm. However, the 14 day dry spell from the 10th - 23rd was interesting and it was the longest March dry spell 2012. It failed to be considered a drought though in Ireland standards (15 days or more - remarkably close). Overall, March like February was not remarkable for rainfall.

Temperature: Quite cool overall. Coldest March since 2013
For the first time since last October, it was a cooler than normal month as it was expecting to be and it was the coldest March since the record-breaking cold one of 2013. I recorded a mean temperature of 5.7c, -1.5c below the LTA which comes to the sixth coldest March in my records (2013, 2010, 2006, 2001 and 1986 were all colder). My maximum of 14.2c on the 12th was my lowest maximum for March since 2013 (which didn't even touch 10c). My minimum of -4.2c on the 18th was my lowest minimum for March also since 2013. What was remarkable about this March was the fact that the previous December (2015) was +2.8c warmer than March and that it had a higher maximum, minimum as well as number of days above 10c. Despite being cool and this remarkable fact, March was quite benign temperature wise overall.

Sunshine: Relatively sunny. Sunniest March since 2003
I recorded a total of 125 hours of sunshine (134% of the LTA) and it was the sunniest March since 2003. However, comparing with recent years, it was still the dullest March since 1996. This is because that every March with the exception of 2013 since 2009 has been sunnier than the one just gone. I recorded 10.1 hours on both the 14th and the 17th which were my sunniest March days since 2012. I recorded 3 completely dull days which is about average for March. Despite being sunnier than normal overall, March was unremarkable sunshine wise.

March 2016 like February will not be remembered very well as there wasn't anything remarkable about it with the exception of the fact that December 2015 was warmer than the month by a long way.
