Is there anywhere nice in Kildare suitable for a retired couple, somewhere with a bit of life would be nice, we have a budget of 170k but only looking for somewhere small.

you could buy a 2 or 3 bed in a 10 year old estate in Athy. for under 100k.

I'd say Kildare Town, but maybe just outside on the outskirts rather than in an estate.

Decent public transport especially trains for good daytrips with the travel pass, the fabulous National Stud (annual membership about €70), Kildare village for shopping and good selection of bars and restaurants.

For cinema and theatre, Newbridge is a short drive away.

Michael McWey is probably the best "local" auctioneer.

Maynooth is a fantastic place to live, you would need to shop around but you might manage to get a 2 bed place within your price range/

Yeah Maynooth is a world away from Athy or even Kildare town

As someone who lives in Kildare, I think a retired couple would do much better than to live in commuter belt town. Look down the country. You'd get a fabulous detached property (i.e. quiet) in Leitrim with lake views (no lakes in Kildare) for half your budget. Very friendly people, and if you live close enough to a town of substance like Carrick-on-Shannon you'd have a cinema, theatre, swimming pool etc (none of those in Maynooth), and due to the low population density they are never mobbed. (Just stay away from Carrick after dark at weekends: stags and hens)

The 2 things Maynooth lacks are a swimming pool and a cinema:(
There is a fantastic community though and everything you could need is within walking distance.

Both are semi-likely with the college expansion. KCC looking for funding for a joint venture with the college for a KCC operated but free for students pool and the cinema was on the masterplan - I'd imagine a small enough 5 screener or so.

Maynooth has a swimming pool in the Glen royal hotel!

Maynooth houses are some of the most expensive in Kildare however the town itself is a lovely place to live! You are beside everywhere with regular buses and trains into town!

Neither of us swim so no pool is not a problem. A two bedroom would be fine. I like the sound of Maynooth so will take a look there so thanks for that suggestion. We did look at Drogheda but that was so ugly we couldn't live there.

I think you will have difficulty finding a suitable property within your budget in North Kildare, even two bed apartments typically cost more than that.

Would you consider Enfield? It's a nice little village with a good range of shops and pubs and has pretty good transport links - bus and train to Dublin.

Maynooth is expensive and at that price level you run the risk of living beside students in an apartment. Kilcock might be better. Services not as good but nearby and regular train & bus. Hence, it's cheaper.

Would ideally like somewhere with bus and train services so if Enfield and Kilocock have these that sounds fine.

Kilcullen would be good too. Estates within walking distance to town and in the middle of Naas and Newbridge.

Train wise you'll have limited services out there, as you're on the Longford route and will have the same service as Longford does. You also have fares to go with it (if you don't have free travel). E.g. Kilcock to Maynooth is €6 single, for a 6km journey.
