Has anyone tried the Green Spot Chateau Leocille Barton?

Chateau Leoville Barton Its been mentioned quite a few times on this thread now as being outstanding.

If you've had the regular greenspot, its got all of that pot still depth and body, but with an added floral almost botanical quality which i assume is the wine casks in action.

Its a few steps ahead of regular greenspot for sure and thats saying something.

Would i be better off adding a few more euro and going for the Yellow Spot?

Depends what you want. Yellow spot isn't any better than green spot imo, it's a different dram with a different pallette.

It's a bit heavier than greenapot, more robust, a bit spicier, has more wood in the taste and is sweeter with Christmas fruits.

green is lighter with more fresh summer fruits like apple or peach, much less wood.

I could drink a lot more Greenspot in a single sitting than yellowspot, not because one is better, but because yellow is just richer & heavier. but that's just me.

Poured out a glass of the O'Briens whiskey last night.
First time I've ever done it but I threw most of it down the sink!

Ended up rinsing out with regular Jameson!

The O'Briens will be set aside for any visitors that I don't like! :D

If you can find a bottle of Powers John lane release.

You pretty much get the yellow spot experience at a more reasonable price point.

Tesco often have this reduced and you can use competitior vouchers for a further reduction.

Are you sure it's the John Lane's release?

I've never seen it in Tesco but my local Tesco has a fairly limited whiskey offering in general.

The Three swallows release I've seen in super value.

Got it myself , it comes with a map/drawing of the distillery for some reason.

Galway tesco has a nice selection of good whiskey.

3 swallows is on special atm in tesco but i can't remember the price low 30's I think

Johnnie Walker Black Label. Anybody else a fan?

This is what the john lane sig release bottle looks like. Its not a whole lot cheaper than yellow spot though, yellow spot is about 70 quid, John lane is 64 quid (in celtic whiskey shop) . For the sake of 6 quid, just get the yellow spot if thats what you want.

There is a powers "signature release", but I dont think its a substitute for yellow spot. its lovely, but quite different from yellowspot.

Some people love it, i found it very "meh". for the price id rather a bottle of talisker or one of the dozens of other subtly smoky scotches,if you want a subtle smoky malt. I got a bottle on sale in o briens last xmas for 30 quid and even at that, i didint think it worth it. its certainly not worth it at the normal 40 euro price.

I personally love it, but its a bit pricey for a blend.

Speaking of Johnnie Walker. What happened to the Red Label? It used to be very drinkable. Had it recently and everyone I had it with agreed it had changed and not in a good way.

I picked it up actually seeing as it was reduced, not sure if I would pay €40+ normally.

I haven't had it recently myself, in what way has it changed?

Not sure how to describe it. It tastes younger, less smooth and feinty. It tastes cheaper.

All JW products seem to be moving to younger stocks. JWB still has the age statement but the rest are gone more or less.

JW Black still has the complex flavours you would expect from an older stock, despite being a blend. Red used to be one of my favourite "everyday" brands, but Ive had one or two glasses of it in 3 years, and won't be rushing back anytime soon.

For anyone who drinks it, Powers is on special in Tesco at the moment. €20 for 70ml. That's a big saving. Usually around the €29 mark.

I always keep a bottle of Powers on the shelf so picked up a couple of bottles.

just in time for the hot whiskey season too :)

Crested Ten is my favourite with a few cubes of ice and a splash of sprite zero - it was my Grandfather's drink, though he didn't "ruin" it by adding anything. My local Super Valu has reduced the price of it from €36 to €30.

Yellow Spot is 80e in the CWS.

Sure if you want YS don't buy JLR.

But for 15 less for me you're getting a very similar taste profile of very similar quality for 15e less.

If you're happy to try either Id suggest the JLR.

Is there any issue storing whiskey in a crystal decanter ? e.g. from exposure to light or air.

Lead leaching. Not all crystal is lead crystal, though.

Finally opened up this rye which I'd bought via flaviar during the summer

Oh dear. It's Waterford from about ten years ago if that makes any difference

Bought a bottle of High West a couple of years ago and still haven't finished it. Sickly sweet for my taste.

Town Branch is a lovely bourbon.

Was it the high west bourbon you bought? Really like ryes myself and wish I had access to more.

Here was the only scrap of good news I've come across all bloody morning:

    http://connachttribune.ie/specialist-city-whiskey-shop-is-given-the-go-ahead-089/

Great, as I think we all need a stiff drink tonight.
