Shouldn't be too difficult, it's hardly uncommon.

It's pretty difficult to get in Dublin. Have tried to get it a few times but not stocked anywhere.

Took me about 20 seconds to Google that the CWS stock it.

They still had about 6 packs of the Writers Tears in Tesco Arthur's Quay, Limerick this afternoon. Had to pick one up.

Woodford Reserve is great stuff as well, nicer than Bullelit. Said I may as well pour a glass of it, for a litre of it for 40 euro at the airport in Majorca a few months back.

Finally got my hands on a Writers Tears Copper Pot gift set with two glasses today in Tesco Liffey Valley (f**k me but that place is HUGE) at €35 it's a steal

The local Tesco is a horrible little kip and never stocks anything premium.

Will be cracking it open with the brother in law on the evening of Tuesday week :)

    Scrap the cap!

Pulled my Laphroaig 10 out of the press this evening, I love the little bit of sweetness you get on the tongue.

Tried the Irish Reserve Single Malt 26 yo whiskey from Aldi after a sabbatical. A much improved animal from first opening imo

Just got into Whisky in the last year, I'm still not getting soft on the pallet or gentle caramel notes, but with a few cubes of ice I feel really grown up at 53...!!!

I've Tried Johnny walker black, red, Jameson, Black bush, Cork something or other, Killbegan, Bullit, Makers mark, woodford reserve, Redbrest jesus that's a lot of empty bottles in a year for a non whisky drinker :D:D

Is it not to do with them filtering it trough charcoal thus artificially enhancing the flavor? I read that because of this it doesn’t meet the requirements of a whiskey in the US and after a bit of two a fro many year ago with ABC they agreed to brand it Tennessee Whiskey

Nope, it meets the letter of the law - filtering is explicitly allowed and there are charcoal filtered products sold as Bourbon.

The filtering is legally required to us the Tennessee Whiskey name, though. But it doesn't stop it meeting the requirements for the Bourbon name.

They simply prefer the branding, makes it seem like something different - and it works.

Any suggestions on what to try for someone relatively new to whiskey?

Have always been a fan of standard Jameson. Have tried Redbreast 12, Redbreast Lustau, Jameson Black Barrel and Yellow Spot.

I really like the Lustau and the Black Barrel was unusual but tasty. Was really underwhelmed by the Yellow Spot.

Have a taster bottle of Writers Tears Copper Pot at home to try next.

For a unique Irish whiskey experience I'd recommend Glendalough 13 mizunara. The whiskey is finished off in virgin Japanese mizunara oak which is rare and very expensive. Won World best Irish whiskey recently. I tried it at whiskey live and also had a small measure last night and its very nice and very different from your usual Irish whiskies.

Anyone recommend a decent rye in the lowish budget category? Bulleit is €30 in Tesco at the moment, is that fairly ok? Willing to spend a little more than that if justified.

Thanks, I'll have a look at it.

What do people generally find is the best way to taste new whiskeys without having to invest in a full bottle each time?

I know there are occasionally whiskey tastings around Dublin and the celtic Whiskey shop does some taster bottles. I also came across this which seems like a great idea: https://www.lmulliganwhiskeyshop.com/Articles.asp?ID=257

The best way is just to buy a measure at a bar. Pop into somewhere like the Dingle Whiskey Bar where they have a massive selection and a wealth of knowledge so that they recommend you something you're interested in.

Tastings and tasting sets are indeed the next best ways. Dingle whiskey bar also do great weekly tasting sessions. This is really reading like I work there or something but I just love that place haha

Have you tried Green Spot? A lot of people who don't like Yellow Spot still really enjoy Green Spot as they're quite different. The Greenspot Leoville Barton expression is a favourite of mine.

Green Spot and Bushmills Black Bush are two fine whiskeys, both worth a try.

Bought a Talisker 10 in Tesco today for 30 quid. I usually pay 55-60 for it.

And I only went in for bread..

Surprised you're a fan of standard jameson and didn't like yellow spot. The fact you like Lusatu and black barrel and not yellow spot has me struggling on what to suggest.

Possibly Green Spot Chateau Léoville Barton

Either of the caskmates iterations should be fine, and on the cheaper end of the scale also. I thought they were good value for a decent whisky.

Been building the stocks back up over the past few months, in preparation for the silly season. Currently have the following to get stuck into over the next couple of weeks:

    Famous grouse smoky black
    Chivas Regal 12
    Jura 10
    Johnnnie Walker green label
    Johnnie walker collector's edition
    Green spot (x 3 bottles :p)
    Highland Park 12
    Bowmore 12 single malt

Sainsbury's in Newry have a good few deals on at the moment, well worth a trip. Still raging I didn't pick up a bottle of Glenlivet founder's reserve for ~€25. They also do a wide range of 50ml tasters for a couple of pounds each if you were looking for stocking fillers.

Yeah they are sold out a while now in Mitchells, but still taking orders for post Christmas delivery.
I've heard that the next batch will have a cardboard tube, not a metal one like the first batch..

My understanding is that the airport got huge supplies as a main market and still has some left.
Most retailers in Ireland e.g. O'Briens sold out almost instantly.

€30 in Tesco until the 24th. And if you purchase (with other groceries) using a €10 off €45 spend voucher, that brings the effective price down to €23.33!

what's the founders reserve like? what would you compare it to? I've seen its a best seller on Amazon.

Buying a gift for a whiskey drinker, I know people would have different tastes but which would be nicer red breast 12 or jack daniels single Barrell or is there another drink around that price range (€60 ish)?

    Thanks

Edit: there is a cardhu 12 on offer for 30 in Tesco, that nice or does that offer say it's not as good?

Personally the Red Brest is the best available for that price and is the one I'd recommend.

Talisker 10 Year old is €30 in Tesco and is a good option if you'd prefer scotch.

The other option would be Green Spot for €50 (O'Briens) which would also be very good and is cheaper than you usually get it for.

I really liked the Glenlivet 12yo, the dropoff to the Founders Reserve is dramatic. Better off going 'up' to 10 year old Jura or 'down' to something like Monkey Shoulder or Chivas Regal.

    Green Spot >>> RB12

If he drinks American whiskey, you can get some really good stuff in and around that price. Town Branch etc.

It's a matter of taste and opinion you can't say one is better than the other. Red Breast would be to more people's taste though I would imagine.

Due to the abundance of Tesco Vouchers doing the rounds I ended up in there today grabbing a bit of lunch and picked up a Talisker 10 after all the praise here.
Looking forward to trying that over Christmas.

Loads of Proper 12 on the shelf too :D

You literally said "RB12 is the best available at that price". You also clearly stated that this was merely your opinion. You somehow then say that RB would be to more people's taste.

Of course the entire thing is subjective. All I did was give my two cents.

Cardhu is a nice, smooth scotch. The offer is because Tesco have nearly every Diageo whiskey on offer for some reason

Where? I am still chasing it!

    Any luck in getting one?

There was 2,700 bottles and I think I read somewhere that 600 of them went to America.

I wonder is there a big difference in taste between it and the other Dingle brands that sell at 46.5%?

Anyone here try them and taste any difference?

Yep. O'Briens turned up trumps! Not tasted. Reports on facebook suggest it is (emmmm) popular because of scarcity rather than excellence. Some went to UK as well.

Third of rare Scotch whiskies tested found to be fake

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-46566703
More than a third of vintage Scotch whiskies tested at a specialist laboratory have been found to be fake, BBC Scotland has learned.

Twenty-one out of 55 bottles of rare Scotch were deemed to be outright fakes or whiskies not distilled in the year declared.

The tests were conducted at the East Kilbride-based Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC).

It used advanced radiocarbon dating techniques to reach its conclusions.
    ...
The rare whisky bottles identified as fakes this year included an Ardbeg 1885, which had been acquired from a private owner, and a Thorne's Heritage early 20th Century blended whisky purchased from an auctioneer.

RW101 said a total of 10 single malts purporting to be from 1900 or earlier were found not to be genuine.

Hardly surprising stuff like this would happen given the profits which can be made.

For outright collectors (who will never drink the stuff) once you can make the bottle and label look convincing you're home free, the contents could be anything!

    Scrap the cap!
