The missus has a bottle for me for Christmas. I'm looking forward to savouring it as I've only had it out before.

Red spot picked up, looks like it should be coming back in stock

Plenty of red spot in Celtic whiskey shop

Whats the verdict on red spot lads?

I only tried it at whiskey live (first sample i went for in fact) and wasn't blown away by it.

Would like to give it another go, maybe at home to savour it some more but thinking of redbreast 15 instead which I'm well acquainted with and love. Cheaper too.

Picked up a bottle of Cardhu in tesco, looking forward to giving it a try.

Picked up a bottle of Cardhu in tesco, looking forward to giving it a try.

Well i really loved the Cardhu I opened last night, tight the aromas were amazing and followed through in taste.

Opened a Bushmills 10 tonight and whilst is normally be very happy with it it has a much narrower taste and is a lot firey than the Cardhu which I'm a bit afraid is now setting an expectation level i won't be able to match very often unless i win the lotto :-(

As said previously I'm only new to Whiskey, Drop of Kilbeggan tonight, bit rough around the edges..

Most other Speysides are quite like Cardhu. It's just the most easily available

What would you lads drink your whisky from? Id always use a glencairn glass as I've a set of four. I find it funny in films they always seem to use a heavy cut crystal glass, but I'd never consider one for a drink.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,432 ✭✭✭Wailin

Glencairn all the way. The Tuath glass is grand too but not a fan of the awkward base shape.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,511 ✭✭✭VW 1

I've one of those too, the base i dont mind too much as i dont hold it that way, but the outward lip means you're head is way back having a sip.

    Tasting : Glencairn

    Drinking - Tumbler

I've eight different glasses for drinking beer so I use one of them. Must buy a glencairn today actually. See if it makes a difference

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,511 ✭✭✭VW 1

The part i dont get about drinking out of a tumbler, if it tastes and smells more intense out of a glencairn, why not always use a glencairn? That said, beer glasses would work just as well assuming the glass narrows towards the top.

Because the base annoys the **** out of me and is more easily knocked over and I find the lip of it too sharp for repeated comfortable drinking.

Fair point.. I like the sharp lip. Not criticising btw, let everyone enjoy it whatever way they fancy!

Have to drink out of a tumbler, glencairn is ok for tasting...but it's just too awkward for a proper drink for me

Currently sipping nikka from the barrel

  • Registered Users Posts: 71 ✭✭Whiskey Eire

I drink out of the glencairn too. I find I take my time more with the drink.

I use a small brandy glass half way between glencairn and tumbler in size, and fits one ice cube for scotch nicely.

always been meaning to buy a glencairn but I'm quite content with my (heavy) Waterford Crystal tumbler, all I'm short is a cigar and a Reliant Robin parked outside :)

I did the tour in the Irish whiskey museum at the bottom of Grafton st, for 16 quid you get 3 whiskeys, a tour & a branded glencairn glass. For anyone looking at buying one, it's an hour well spent.

    Red Spot verdict:

Very tasty, gorgeous colour, nice long finish whilst still being quite light.

Probably not 115e worth but definitely more worth its price than the Yellow Spot.

Green Spot lb for lb probably still the king of them for me, but all in all very happy with it.

I'm coming to the end of a bottle of Hibiki 12 that I only price checked a replacement of recently. Would cost north of 500e because of the shortage of Japanese. Think I'll keep that put away for a while and have the Red Spot for my premium tipple.

Surprised to find a bottle of this in a hamper. Didn't think it was available anymore :)

Very interesting! It was rebranded simply as "Crested" a few years ago. Was always a lovely one.

Got a bottle of Method & madness single grain from a friend, must be the first virgin oak barrelled whiskey I've ever had, as it really impacts the flavour, it's like drinking a lovely whiskey in a carpenters shop it's gorgeous.

Yeah, I've had the Crested but not had the original. Apparently it's different from what I've read.

Will be tasting the Glengoyne shortly and can't bloody wait! Have a good one folks.

Sipping away on my first Japanese whisky, Nikka from the barrel. Delighted herself picked it up, more smoky/peaty than irish whisky but very light and delicate, not overpowering at all.

Just got my present from my brother, a bottle of bourbon called Noah's Mill. Never heard of it before now but it's extremely highly reviewed online.

At 57% it packs a punch. Going to ease into things by having some Woodford Reserve first.

Didn't end up getting a bottle of MVR in the end
Opened my present yesterday morning and the wonderful Ms Brinty was after getting me one. Think she's a keeper lads ;)
It's a 2018 bottle and I've no intention of opening anytime soon

Bloody gorgeous! Definitely one to let breathe awhile and take your time with.

Full on sherry and spices but intense oak too from the long maturation. You really taste it's age. 48% but no burn at all, just very smooth.

I only had the one dram as had plenty of wine beforehand.

    Did you have the Middleton?

Got a nice selection for Christmas (see attachment). Never had the Ardbeg but love peaty malts so looking forward to it.

I did. Very nice but will have to try it fresh without having ate and drink 6000 calories beforehand.

Sounds like a great foundation for a tasting session

I've cracked open a bottle of Lag 16 as my post dinner drink. Needed something different for a bit after yesterdays pot still extravaganza.

Oh yeah, Woodford Reserve to start followed by my present, Noah's Mill. Some heat from it that fades, lovely, lovely stuff!

Going back to Irish later with some Green Spot.

    What’s the Lambay whiskey like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

had some Lustau after dinner yesterday, so very festive. Got a bottle of Laphroaig Select in Newry at the weekend for 20 odd pound and that was smashed through on Christmas Eve with my two brothers, nearly gone already ooops :P love it though.

Have been gifted Highland Park 12 and Johnny Walker Black, I like em both. I bought a bottle of Woodford for a mate and had a taste, it's really good. Might be my new favourite entry level bourbon. Might have Nikka from the Barrel or Green Spot Leo for this evening. Some good whiskey drinking been had this Christmas, stomach is in bits.

Disappointed with the small batch given the price. Trying to be a cognac nearly. Had a nice long finish though.

    Havent had the single malt.

    What’s the Lambay whiskey like?

I like the Lambay, received it as a gift. Find myself sitting down to have one glass and end up having 3/4 glasses

Re: the Lambay cognac angle, it's produced in partnership with a French cognac company in their old barrels.
It is nice - I'd be very happy to receive it as a gift - but thought that at 40+ euros you are comparing it against the likes of Writers Tears & Bushmills 10yo which I much prefer.
But if you're a whiskey drinker who also likes cognac, you might find it just right.

Got a bottle of Red Bush as a present, don't like the look of it at all even though it smells well.
Got a set of Lismore tumblers too, can't see the hype really even though there's a very "soft" lip to them. RB 12 year old onto a Bushmills next.

Brother in law was a Christmas dinner guest, he didn't arrive with one arm as long as the other and kindly brought me a Cardhu 12yo single malt. Hardly any peat at all, but that's fine as far as I'm concerned. On one level it's quite good, if you'd told me it was a NAS Scotch I'd say it was very good, but I'd be somewhat disappointed with the lack of depth and complexity of flavour for a 12yo single malt (nowhere near a RB12 for instance.) I can see how it's a good basis for blends (Cardhu forms the backbone of Johnny Walker) and it's by no means a bad whisk(e)y but I wouldn't be rushing out to buy myself another.

I'm now working my way through the Writers Tears Copper Pot gift set that I bought for myself - very nice indeed and the two tasting glasses are imho the perfect size and shape for whiskey.

Single pot still whiskey like RB12 is made from a mash that incudes unmalted barley, so you wouldn't expect a similarly aged single malt to be as complex.
