Heading to France in a few months and am planning my spending already.
Leclercs have a few which appear to be quite cheaper than Irish prices. I'm not familiar with any of them and would appreciate advice (nice to drink, good value, etc.)...
    Irish
    Tullamore Dew Phoenix @ €40
Connemara Peated Irish Single Malt @ €31.90

Was in Dordogne over Easter. Very little Irish in supermarkets and only basic Jameson , Paddy, Bush, Tullamore, Teeling and very little else. Saw no Tull Phoenix in Leclerc this time or any time last number of years. Leclerc is my go to for wine BIBs and have been in dozens...no Phoenix!

Beware websites....shops do not necessarily stock. Auchan used have good range of Redbreast/Yellow/Green Spot and others...not any more. Still list them as mail order.

What struck me this time compared to previous years was the much more restricted range in Supermarkets. The prices on basics are cheaper than list here but the specials here can neutralise this.

Two/three years ago , I got Jameson 12, Jameson Gold and Paddy Centenary. Some in specialist shops but Auchan Cherbourg had 12 yo and other interesting. Not any more.

In summary, no great joy. Nicholas might have greenspot at about 45 but they are retail chain in towns/cities.La chasse is part of the fun but dont expect too much.

If you want to try heavily peated scotch then there's Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig 10 or Ardbeg 10. All great whiskys, if you like smokey bonfires! Lighter smokey scotch would be Talisker 10, Caol Ila 10, Bowmore 12 etc.

You listed all my favourites. Keeping on the lighter, and cheaper, side ever try Ardmore Legacy?

Seems like more peated Irish whiskey will be coming to market in the future. Ardara distillery in Donegal seem to be taking a stab at it.

As regards cheap stuff I grab a bottle of either Powers or Paddy, depending on which is on offer - Powers is better obviously but there's not a huge difference between them in terms of quality.

Bought a bottle of Jameson tonight for the first time in ages - it's not on the same level as the other two or Bush White. It's definitely a cut above - especially with what I can only describe as a "chewy" aftertaste with a definite pot still aspect to it - for a mass market whiskey I'd forgotten how much is going on there. For the price, 9/10.

Problem now is, due to its national and international popularity Jameson is rarely on offer even on bank holiday weekends etc. :(

    Scrap the cap!

Ha, just shows different tastes. I don't rate Jameson at all, and tend to leave it for the tourists.
Powers I consider to be one of the best bang for bucks out there, especially as you can usually pick it up for 20e in one supermarket or another. But would drink it full price as I really like it. Different league to Paddy as well imo.

Likewise Bushmills White. That and/or Powers, always a spot on my shelf.

It's just stylistic preference. I'd have Jameson or Bush over Paddy or Powers. ;)
    I'm not even a fan of John's Lane. I'd imagine there's a trend there.

My order of the big 3 would be Powers first, Jameson second & Paddy 3rd. Powers to me tastes like a much dearer whiskey than it is, however the other two feel appropriately priced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,926 ✭✭✭beardybrewer

I've been enjoying Kilbeggan the last couple weeks especially its lingering mellow burn. Normally my everyday is Bush White which is so smooth it disappears a bit too quickly.

I've had 'em before sure, but my poor memory doesn't rate Paddys/Powers at all. Actually I have a very fond memory of having Paddys behind the curtain of a Kerry sweet shop once (that was all they served). Maybe I should mix it up and give Powers another go.

Agreed about Jameson hardly ever being on sale. It's a standard and a solid offering. I think of Paddys as being paintstripper by comparison but that was honestly 10 years ago since I've had it so maybe worth one more try too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Useful.Idiot

I had Paddys at a musical festival recently, was surprisingly enjoyable as I always used to think it was bottom of the barrel stuff (Bell's scotch holds that current crown for me). Would be very interested in comparing the 3 Irish standards side by side, maybe also with a Lidl/Aldi Irish whiskey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,705 ✭✭✭2011abc

I’d consider the ‘basics’ / auld reliables to be Bush /Powers/Paddy and Jameson but Lidl/Aldi 18.99 Irish good and Kilbeggan /Tullamore and a few others are also worthy if expanding the field

I'm just finishing a bottle of Ardmore Traditional Peated. A quick Google tells me the legacy is the replacement for the Traditional release since 2014. I must've picked up one of the last bottles of Traditional as I only bought it last year.

I really enjoy the Traditional Peated version anyway. It's not a strong peat but it's very drinkable, would definitely buy another bottle!

Will be between €500-€600 I'd guess. Would you be considering paying that much for a whisky?

I'm seeing a few ads on facebook and instagram for the Game of Thrones whiskey collection €500 for 8 bottles of scotch, usual suspects like Cardhu, Laguvalin, Talisker are in it but I don't see any age statements or what the blends are. Anyone know anything about it? I remember lots of posts on r/whiskey a few months back of Game of Thrones whiskies but they were mostly Johnny Walker from memory, is this a new thing or just only coming to here now? I'd have no interest in the full set but wouldn't mind one or two bottles if they were interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,592 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Why is a Game of Thrones collection entirely Scotch? Bushmills 10 and the promise of something from Echlinville should be sufficient :pac:

Doesn't look like anything special to me but I haven't watched one episode yet.

It's being promoted as a very rare collectors item with a lot of hype from reps about how quickly it sold out and how massive profit will be made by anyone who sits on a full set for a couple of years.

I can't see the logic at all, Amazon had the full set for 398 pounds last week.

They are new whiskeys - not reskins. Lag is a 9 year old. Can't remember about the other but not many have age statement from what I can recall.

They were initially released in states and then eventually over here this year.

Reviews were mixed for them - very few people felt they were worth the asking price. I guess if you are into the series it would be nice to have a few to try.

Deal with Diageo so had to be all the distilleries they own. A Bushmills version would have been good though!

Ah fair enough, i thought this was different to the US release. Not overly into the TV series, liked the books allright but wouldn't go out and spend €60 on a bottle unless it was going to be worth it.

I got in earlier but you know on the day of sale it's going to be a probable sh*tshow.

It tanked completly for the press release at 7 when most people were probable trying to get on.

Christ, it's not out until the 27th and website has crashed already! Demand for this will be off the charts with only 924 bottles available.

    It's being sold as a collector's item.
There are a lot of sets being released, but so far they have been selling way above retail in auctions.

Only released officially here this week I think and they are flying off the shelves.

The big gain on a quick flip is likely gone, but they may go back up in a few years. Nice looking set for display too.

Buy 'um all, they'll be worth a fortune.

I've tried various types of hooch there but nothing I'd describe as whiskey.

I did pick up a bottle of Midleton in Beijing Duty Free at a great price a couple of years ago so keep an eye out.

    It's okay.

No maturation warehouse in/around the distillery which was disappointing to me (insurance being the reason due to the previous big whiskey fire in Dub back in the day). Lovely to see the stills in person they are impressive.

Nice visitor centre. Whiskey tasting at the end is not really detailed. Kinda just thrown at you, not discussed at length (I did the more expensive whiskey tour for 30 euro I think).

Others might have a better impressions but I've been on better (more personable) tours.

Edit: Should say I went when they were flat out on a busy day so might have influenced the quality of the tour a bit.

It did the tour with my Da a couple of years ago. Really enjoyable why to let a few hours slip by.
You'll get the story of the whiskey fire and history of the brand.
The tour is good but prepare for serious heat.
Found the tasting at the end good. If you want more info just ask. Our guide was more than happy to go in to detail for anyone interested.

Ya the johnnie walker white walker one. I think I'm going to buy them. €560 I think it's a decent price. I did price them individually and they were around the €460. Obviously being GOT limited edition you'd expect to pay a premium for them. Some off licences are selling for €800+ which is ridiculous altogether.

That is a bit mad @ 800+, but they were making that at auctions all right.
I grabbed a set myself, but must pick up the white walker one too, it's meant to be Sh1te, but good to have it with the set I guess.
