I was convinced that they wouldn't get as far as releasing the whiskey with that name. I was wrong about that.
It's still wouldn't surprise me if the name gets pulled. If this happens and they handle the publicity correctly, it could give the brand a boost by being in the headlines again. I think the IWA were asleep at the wheel when that brand came out.

Nobody, who knows that whiskey can be aged, thinks Proper 12 is 12 years old.

I suppose the regulator is more concerned for the casual whiskey drinker who scans a shelf and sees a plethora of names and numbers and lands on "Proper Twelve" thinking it's very good value compared to all the other 12 year olds.

Didn't crested ten eventually become crested to avoid misleading people into thinking it was ten year old whiskey?

Yes, I believe that was the reason for the name change.

Don't underestimate the ignorance that is out there regarding whiskey.

A barman once explained to me the difference between Irish and Scotch whisky - Scotch is blended and Irish isn't.

Tour guide at a large distillery - "It has to be triple distilled to be legally called Irish whiskey."

Bought a bottle of Method & Madness Single Pot Still at the weekend. Haven't opened it yet but have tasted it before and I'm a fan of these in general, particularly the pot still bottles. This one is batch 2, "French Chestnut"
Batch 2 of this special Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey has been matured in a combination of ex-oloroso Sherry and ex-Bourbon barrels before being transferred to chestnut casks sourced from the Isére region in France.
Method and Madness reinforces Irish Distillers’ “continued commitment” to experimentation and innovation at the Midleton Distillery.

There is a newer version aged in Hungarian Oak but that one is a bit more expensive.

Was in the UK last weekend and there was a 2 1000cl for £75 deal for certain whiskeys. Got a bottle of Jameson Signature and a bottle of Aberfeldy Single Malt. Had never had the Jameson before so having a wee one now, tis nice, very subtle. Havnt had any of the Aberfeldy yet but the chap in the store recommended it. Any opinions?

As an aside, drinking whiskey is only a recent phenomenon to me and its very much a home drink rather than a night out one. How does one know whether a particular brand is better with an ice cube or not or is it purely personal preference?

Always going to be personal preferences

A few glasses in I'll argue to the death that certain brands need ice/a bit of cold water/nothing but that's my preference on them - others will be different.

I use a small amount of ice in most. I've found a few that benefit slightly from being a little bit cold but the melting ice kills them for me (the basic Jura) - but others will disagree; and that's fine. They're right for them!

Cheers. I generally stick a cube or two in myself alright. Have mainly been drinking Red Breast 12 (absolutely love it) or Black Barrell.

You'll probably like Speyside and low/no smoke Highland (which Aberfeldy is) Scotch if you like those; but if you're only getting started you should probably try anything and everything. Maybe in a whiskey bar first rather than buying everything!

Trying Redbreast 15 for the first time, excellent whiskey... would prefer this to the RB 12 cask strength for sure.

Is it worth 40 more than the 12 im not too sure

That would depend on the kind of wood the stairs is made from :pac:

Is Aldi's Clarke's bourbon discontinued? Haven't seen it for a while.

Was surprisingly decent for an everyday drink.

What's Woodford Reserve like? Enjoyed the last bottle of bullet bourbon I drank and I can get a bottle for £18.

Enjoying a bottle of it at the moment that I picked up in duty free. Had never really got into Bourbon but I must say I'm quite liking it!

Highly recommended, love it and much better than Bullelit in my opinion.

Yeah I purchased it 2mins after posting. Even at £18 I'll use it for some whiskey sours if I don't like it neat.

I'm off to England fairly soon anything over there in the supermarkets (Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Waitrose etc) that is a good deal compared to buying in Ireland? Just looking for everyday good value. I'm also on a mission to get beer for our local beer tasting club so will be visiting every supermarket I can get to.

Tesco the best for beer. Morrisons has Northern Monk stuff.

I'm not new to the beer side of things, 60+ different beers so far this year. Tesco is good but I find Morrison's (maybe because I used to live in Yorkshire) the best.

Whiskey all I know is I like it :D but not a clue what is what.

Nah Tesco is the best now. They got some craft beer nerd in charge of all the beer buying so they have loads of stuff. Maybe this is better moved to the beer thread.

45,000 barrels of Jim Beam have been destroyed in a fire in Kentucky. Works out at around 6.75 million bottles. One of the fire fighters said it was the best smelling fire he's ever been at.

Sainsbury's usually have good deals on selected spirits including whiskey

Was passing through Thurles today and found it in Aldi there. At €14.99 it's hard to knock it.

Is this a new one as distinct from the current one or the previous one or the dillon one or the fitzgerald one or the gilbeys one or various other versions?

You should be able to get greenspot for c45/50 euro in Nicolas....a chain of wine shops, mostly in cities /towns in France. No idea how it compares to any Japanese (never tasted one) but at that price , greenspot is a good buy.

On a more general point, caves (independent wine shops) sparodically have good Irish. Supermarkets are getting worse...basics only. I tour them ...la chasse... and sometimes do well.

As far as I'm aware there's nothing Japanese targeting the pot still taste profile - it all targets Scotch variants. You'll find similar tastes from other pot stills, all of which are Irish.

Chita is basic enough stuff tbh. Noting special at all.
There are far better japanese whiskeys (that are affordable). But Greenspot is very different.

They're a few that deviate from the scotch profile.
But none as fat a pot still. That's still only found in Ireland afaik.

Really like that one, near to the end of the bottle now so trying to make it last!
Have the Hungarian one waiting as as replacement.

Interested in people opinions on if the new RedBreast labels will result in a price hike ?
I'm planning on picking up a RB 21 later this month.
Not sure if i should wait, but don't want to see it jump 20-30 euro's.

Any advice on a whiskey? I love RB 12, compared it to Green Spot just now and although Green is excellent I still prefer the RB.

Anything in a similar vein i might like? Have an unopened bottle of Powers Johns Lane that I got as a present that should hit the spot.

Redbreast 12 cask strength is a step up from the standard 12, a lovely whiskey. Worth the extra imo.

Same as, hard to beat the RB 12 but a soft spot for Green Spot too. I keep going back to the Teelings small batch for good value, easy on the nose and smooth enough.
I'm interested to hear more of what the two lads above were talking about, Method and Madness, and where it can be got?

Didn't like the Powers John Lane that much at first but it's definitely grown on me.

If you want to move up a bit from Green Spot, Yellow Spot is a fairly logical choice. Not tried Red yet nor do I expect to until its bedded in and goes on a discount at some point!

Johns Lane is a very good product also.

Method and Madness are "experimental" bottles from Middleton. They are a bit different from normal middleton but are worth checking out.

I tasted a few of them at a tasting but they can be bought in the airport and celtic whiskey shop for sure.

They have a range, single malt, single grain, pot still etc. And then different batches within that.

There's also apparently a Gin and a 31 year old single grain if you've €2k+ lying around!

The Jura is lovely. Monkey shoulder is nice too - almost too easy to drink, would be good in cocktails too.
But think the Jura would be easier to get home as it is boxed up.

I don't see much there personally, the Laphraoig doesnt look to have an age statement, the Jura I've seen much cheaper, not a fan of JW, and never heard of Monkey Shoulder.......

You won't get the Jura in ROI for €35? Unless you mean up North?

Monkey Shoulder is a new category of whisky, a "blended malt". Unlike other blends it doesn't have any grain, just malted whiskies. In this case, Balvenie, Glenfiddich and Kininvie. No age statement though. I'd say most similar to Chivas.

Thanks guys, might invest in a bottle of Monkey Shoulder to enjoy on the porch in the evening as the sun sets on another scorcher of a day :-)
