hennessy or jameson for the weekend?

Try Jameson Crested or Jameson Caskmates Stout if you haven't already tried them.

If you're near Dublin city get into the Celtic Whiskey Shop for some Park Cognac.

Getting the ferry on Saturday to Roscoff, holidaying in France. Bought the Chita last year on the ferry and was left underwhelmed by it. Sipping green spot now and like it, anything similar Japanese or just stay with what I know?

So it turned out the selection on the Pont Aven was poor enough, or else I've most of them drank( I have). Stopped at 2 "La Caves" but couldn't decide and ended up buying RB12 for 40euro on the boat home. And a cheeky Morgan's Spiced litre for 13euro.

I see Macallan have dropped the NAS and reverted back to the normal.

    The 12 is some drop.

Had a glass of knappogue castle the other day. Distilled in 1951 and bottled after 36 years in 1987. Sublime.

Glendronach probably my fav scotch. The Celtic Whiskey shop are out of stock and they're no longer the main distributor of it. Awful shame.

Literally the exact same (bar the label obviously) as Redbreast Dream Cask 20 Year PX. Thought I struck gold :o

Looks similar, but the dream Cask bottles are 500ml!!

There's a specific forum for referrals codes like you posted, you're not allowed to post them in any forum other than that - mostly because the people who spam them usually don't let you know when something is a referral.

This is the "mobile" url: https://m.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1849

I think whoever edited my post misunderstood. I was posting the link to enter the competition. I figure free whiskey is of interest.
I don’t really want half the site entering tbh.

Had a go of The Irishman Marsala cask finish the other day in Garavans in Galway City.

Some drop that one if you are into the syrupy sweet end of whiskeys with backend peppery notes. I can see why the bottles sold out quickly with that one. Anyone tried it?

Priced a drop of DC2 in there too. 85 euro a measure now... Up from 65 to begin with supposedly.

I did. It asked Jameson (whiskey) or Hennessy (not whiskey) in the 'what whiskey' thread. Therefore Jameson was the correct answer. QED

The poster followed up his question about Hennessy or Jameson with a statement that he was "looking for whiskey to drink straight".

This suggests he's not aware that Hennessy isn't whiskey, hence my confusion.

My reading comprehension is fine. Yours could do with a bit of work though.

That was my interpretation of it too FWIW. Was focused on other confusion at the time though.

It might be the Irish sounding name of Hennessy that causes confusion to the unfamiliar.

If you found yourself at a party and they had no whiskey, but they had a bottle of Hennessy lying around, you should definitely try it as an alternative...
iirc Irish pot still whiskey's boom time was in the late 19th century, when the phyloxera pest destroyed France's vineyards and there was a shortage of brandy, cognac etc and Irish whiskey took over as the main late Victorian 'post prandial' or after dinner drink :)

Just to add a bit of confusion to the discussion, there is actually a Hennessy Whiskey, very rare but it was made..

Wonder about its rarity against the other bad cross branding attempt from Bailey's

I just received one of these bottles for a birthday present, I am not a big fan of it, so I was thinking of flogging it or swapping it for some nice JD (that's my preference) anyhow, I was just looking on amazon and they are looking for 419 sterling for the bottle of Midleton, is it really that expensive? or is it an error?

Edit: it's the older style box (single door), the regular shaped bottle..

They could be on the basis that if U dont ask, U wont get. I would happily (very) sell U one for 250 euro but if I was buying, I would offer closer to 150.

The fact you said you don’t like it, bore that mean you’ve opened it? In which case I wouldn’t pay more than 40 quid

The bottle is still sealed, I got a bottle about 7 years ago, it lasted about 4 years, I was basing my taste on that, I know they are supposed to taste different (years), but I don’t think they would be different enough for me to change my opinion. Not sure I would buy an open bottle of anything from anyone. Unless I knew them personally, then I would deffo pass :-)

    Hi all,

Returned home from holiday in France today and whilst there picked up a bottle of Nikka Whiskey Pure Malt on an impulse, it was about €30 IIRC.

Any suggestions as to how best enjoy the first sip? Neat, drop of water, cube of ice or have I purchased something which needs Coke to make it drinkable??

Try it whatever way you want that doesn't involve putting coke in it ffs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,432 ✭✭✭Wailin

A drop of water or neat would be my advice. If you really need to add ice just go with one ice cube. Chilling the whiskey can inhibit the taste.

It really is personal preference but try the above and see how you get on.

The Coke suggestion was a joke in case in my ignorance I'd bought paint stripper which I'm confident I haven't despite zero knowledge of Japanese whisky.

Thanks Wailin, my normal preference rightly or wrongly is to put a very small drop off water into my whiskeys, especially those I know are quality or hope are quality.

I do drink some mostly cheaper Irish whiskies like Paddy or Clontarf 1014 over ice as I think ice makes them more palatable.

Tried a glass this evening with a drop of water.

Nice but nothing special. Slight brandy mixed with honey taste for me. No regrets about buying it but won't buy again, will try something different from Japan next time I have an opportunity to buy Japanese.

Whatever way you like it but if it were me Id be drinking it straight with no ice.

Also, IN MY OPINION, MVR isnt worth drinking, there are better tasting whiskey for less money. If you have a bottle of MVR keep it a few years and off load it for a better whiskey. If you dont wanna do that then drink it straight.

I was given it by my wife as a present 2 years ago. I tasted it years and years ago when working in a bar and it was incredible but not quite sure how to get the best out of it.

There's no rules. What ever way you prefer.
People will tell you that X goes with ice, and Y with a drop of water, but Z is best straight. It's largely hearsay.

One except that's back by science is diluting cask strength whiskeys to better open up the smells. But that's only one aspect, so whether you want to do it is still personal.

Agree with Hogzy, it's a very nice present to get but I'd never pay for a bottle of MVR. Way overpriced for what you get, you're basically paying for the nice presentation box and clever marketing scam. I never add ice to whiskey except if I'm drinking jameson, and to me, MVR is just a fancier, more expensive version of Jameson.

Nikka coffey malt or coffey grain are both lovely Japanese whiskies but price is creeping up due to demand and diminishing stocks. Yamazaki 12 is another gorgeous one, but like most japanese whiskies, it's expensive compared to the usual 12 yo prices.

I like to taste it neat, then add a tiny drop of water.
It's a lovely whiskey, overpriced imo, but lovely.

I'd also strongly recommend that, if you don't have a favourite whiskey glass, to use a wine glass rather than a tumbler.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭ipodrocker

use a narrow wine glass so you can nose the whiskey well, if that is what you want.

Get a tuath glass they are great!
