If I was gonna drop 70euro on a bottle today, I'd just go straight out and get a 10yr Ardbeg. But I like 'em smokey!

I was thinking the same. Or a Talsiker 10, on offer for €47 from O'Briens.

Is it sold out already? Gone off Celtic. Was considering it as a Christmas present for someone (not myself!)

Cheers mate, i said i was topping it up
She knows i like a nicely priced one.
You're normally a good guy for recommendations? Any idea's?

I don't get the impression of smoke from your posts (although Talisker is always a fantastic dram if you do want smoke). I'd look at a Speyside - I quite enjoyed BenRiach, the 16 is in price range and not too difficult to find. Not had Glendronach but it'd be in the same ballpark although they insist its not a Speyside!

Not a smoke fan yet but we'll see
    Speyside is good for now

    Hey lads,

If I was to walk into Tesco/Dunnes, specifically the ones in Galway (Galway Shopping Centre) and wanted to buy a bottle of whisky with little to no knowledge bar having drank a bottle or two of Jameson for <35, what would you suggest? (apologies if this isn't appropriate for the thread)

Black Bush or Crested will both be under 30 at the moment.

In Tesco, Black Bush @ €26 and Powers Three Swallows @ €36 is probably the best value on Irish whiskey available in this jurisdiction.

Johnnie walker black £16.99 on Amazon,

Just started a bottle of Gold, very mellow easy to drink with little to no smokiness, enjoying it.

Trying to convince myself to buy a bottle of Midleton rare?!?!

Funny, was just coming in here to post that I'd received a bottle of it as a present today.

In my mind its very good, lovely to drink, but in value terms I don't know if I'd be paying 150 for it.

Some of my favourites would be yellow spot, john powers lane and redbreast 12. But if its worth the premium of almost double the price of one of those, I don't think I'm convinced.

    You got it for nothing
    Why would you be upset???

    Enjoy
I'll give it a good home if you want

Who's upset!? Was delighted with the gift of course, just saying I don't think I'd pay that type of cash for it.

Going to do a side by side tasting when I open my redbreast 12 cask strength when I open it at Xmas.

Got an early present of a bottle of Nikka Taketsuru last night. Love all the Japanese whiskeys I've had so far and this one is no different. Very sweet.

If anything.... buy a bottle, and leave it in the cupboard for 10yrs. Then sell it.

Btw.. I'm looking for a bottle of 2003

I got a gift of a bottle of 10 yr old Glen Deveron and it was lovely. I'd say the 16 is excellent.

Some suggestions please. I'll be passing through some good duty free shops in the next couple of weeks. I'd like to try a very good Japanese single malt. I'm a big fan of Yellow Spot, Redbreast 12 and I'm currently nursing a 21 yr old Glenfiddich.

    Ideas? TIA

Redbreast Lustau is fantastic, reminds me of a 16yo Bushmills at times.

Slightly higher price range than the Yellow Spot or Redbreast but I can't recommend Hakushu 12 highly enough.

Nikka from the barrel a bit cheaper and great as well.

Only got off my arse to look for a Dingle today. Foxes sold out, Celtic sold out, Mitchells don't have it on their site and aren't answering the phone right now. Time to get something else a bit special for that present instead!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,191 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Mitchells have some but the price is now 80 - too dear for me. Writers Tears Redhead at 44 was bought instead

Opened a Bullet Bourbon recently. Very nice and very drinkable neat.
Will be replacing when gone and will probably try the Bullet Rye also...

Another bottle of powers gold label, I still have the one in it's box from last year. I wonder if anyone wants a trade. I used to be able to swap out in the off license but they stopped doing that.

    Irish coffee material.

Anyone know if the duty free would have much selection Irish whiskey in the likes of Kuala Lumpur/Asian cities?
I'd say they would be dirt cheap but I don't want to have a choice of Jameson or Bushmills.
Otherwise, I'll get the whiskey in Dublin and get them to hold on to it until my return.

Probably not a lot more than Jameson / Bushmills brands as you say. I was travelling from Sao Paulo recently and that was about the extent of the selection.

Be wary if you're looking to get the Duty Free price, you must bring the whiskey with you to your final destination otherwise you'll have to pay the full tag price if you want to pick it up on your arrival back to Dublin.

    Not your cup of tea?

For the price you pay for a bottle of Powers, it's an excellent whiskey.
It's my nightly tipple. I'd be happy if someone got me one.. no-one ever does though :(

I didn't realise you had to bring it with you, I was thinking of the shop and collect option in Dublin. I'll just have to bring them over to asia with me I'd say.
Any tips on the best value here, up to €70:

I'd be thinking Yellow Spot @ €54 or if you wanted to go more expensive the 15 year old Red Brest @ €69. The 16 year old bushmills is great too but I gather from your post above that you are not mad on Bushmills?

Ask to taste before buying as they sometimes have a bottle open for tasting.

Yup the whole point of duty free is you're not paying the duty in the country where the item is bought, the EU has a rule that you pay the duty in the country of purchase but further a field you don't pay duty but the contents must be consumed outside the country of purchase, that's why it's sealed in a bag as opposed to stopping people opening on planes.

Redbreast 15 over Yellow Spot every day of every week.

Red Breast 12 and Writers Tears cracking as well.

Nikka Coffee Grain a good option if you want to try Japanese.

Ah no I have nothing against them I just meant I don't want to be picking from a selection of 3 of the cheapest blended whiskeys that are in every shop.
