    Hi!
My son and friends heading into 2nd year UCD in September are seeking house to rent for 2016-2017 near UCD.
2 guys, 3 girls. Ideally, would like a twin room and 3 single rooms.
Anyone know of a house to suit?

It's far, far too early to be looking. Even if someone knew of a house right now, no landlord is going to rent it to you 6 months in advance.

You'll need to wait until July/August (but before LC results come out) to start looking really.

    Many thanks for that advice.

    Hi!

My son and his flatmate travelled to Dublin to view a property this week, incurring significant costs.

Letting agent was aware that the lads were students and were looking for a house for four students. A number of communications sent to the letting agent re. their attending the viewing, finalising travel and viewing times etc.

The lads were early attending the viewing, first in, and, after the viewing, immediately notified the letting agent they were interested in renting the property.

Late that evening, I received a text from the letting agent advising that the landlord only wanted working tenants who have employer and landlord reference. A wasted trip to Dublin..............Annoying, as the letting agent knew in advance of the viewing the lads' status as students.

There seems to be very few properties accessible to UCD in the kids' price range. Is it likely, they'll have to re-think and look at renting in another area of the city, with possible 2-bus, 1 hour journey each way?

    Regards

shed loads of students rent houses / apartments in and around DCU.. Glasnevin, Santry, Whitehall etc... no need for an hours bus trip... if at first you don't succeed etc...

Not much good for UCD though.

OP, unfortunately for students (and their mammys) UCD is located in one of the poshest, most expensive parts of Dublin. So finding cheap accommodation within shouting distance of Belfield is going to be a tall order. Landlords have the pick of high earning professionals, and that is where students will lose out.

If you are on a budget, you are going to have to think about going a bit further out & yes, they probably will have a commute. Have a look on the Dublin Bus website at the buses that pass the UCD campus. (Off the top of my head, I think the numbers 11 and 46A do, but there are probably others.) Then start looking at properties along those bus lines. Only having to get one bus will cut down on commute times.

Agree with the above poster that trying to take over the lease from someone else, would be the easiest thing to do, if they can find someone.

Thanks, folks, for the postings, nice to know about DCU, even if it's of little use to UCD!!!
Spent til late last night e.mailing auctioneers, probably a waste of time as they post what they have on Daft.ie etc.
The kids are heading into 2nd year, don't know any final year students, so no chance of finding a place via students, alas.
    Will keep on searching...
Are there any online community noticeboards for the D4 area where one could post ads? 😀

Rent in Nutgrove and cycle or get bus 17 to UCD. Cheaper rents and handy enough.

Thanks for that tip- the lads were advised that the 17 bus route not the best- is it reliable and frequent?

Have you contacted the Students Union? They might be able to help.

Katie have a look at Bray, rent will be cheaper and it's a direct Bus route to gates of UCD, buses every 10 mins and about 35 - 45 mins each way, bus route is 145

    21/25

OP, don't email letting agents. Pick up the phone and ring them. It can't hurt to initially make contact by email, giving all your details & requirements, that you can refer back, when you are talking to them. But always follow up by phone too. Don't wait for them to email you back. They rarely do, at least that is my own my experience of answering ads on Daft.

It still suffers from the bad reputation it had years ago but apparently it's a lot better now, the real time bus signs and app help with that.

But really they should cycle, very easy cycle across to UCD from Nutgrove. Get a decent lock and lock the bike properly and they'll have a very cheap and reliable transport for college and around town.

Just had a look at Daft.ie nutgrove doesn't show up so expand to include Churchtown, Ballinteer and Rathfarnham. The actual Nutgrove properties will show up in those searches.
