People said the same things when we were linked to Suarez in 2013. Who cares? He's 23 and a proven goalscorer in a tough league for strikers. I'd take him.

He makes the John Terry/Wayne Bridge thing look like good friendship.

And Giroud cheated on his wife with a model he brought to the team hotel.

Who cares? Icardi is better than Giroud. Let's make a bid.

To be honest I'd be blown away if we got Lacezzette because when all the gossip and ****e was going around he's the one I thought we had the least chance of getting because of Aulas who's notoriously tough to negotiate with

I'd be delighted with the window if we ended up him mahrez and mustafi that'd be 4 players straight into the 1st 11 more or less

I saw on twitter this morning that we're going back with an improved offer for him. Of course, it was from "Sky Sources", so pinch of salt required.

He's nowhere near the level of Suarez, that's the difference.

The Ox has looked really good in preseason. Would be good to have a bit of competition for whoever comes in to play on the wing.

As for Theo, he really has lost it. He should have put one away last night, but just not happening for him.

    The season. FYP.

No evidence to support it, but wouldn't be surprised.

The notion we have to buy someone of that level to compete is a fallacy. Even a striker a little bit bit better or worse than Giroud puts us in a much better position than last season in terms of depth alone. If he has goal drought, off day or gets injured it's better to have another striker in the squad than not, someone who should manage roughly the same amount of goals in all comps as Giroud would make the world of difference and I think Icardi and Lacazette fit the bill perfectly.

Suarez is the best striker in the world.

The gossip machine is really in full drive these last few days.

The Mahrez thing has gone quiet, despite that 'knowing look' from Arsene yesterday.

The Mustafi thing has got a lot of traction in lots of circles, he'd be a brilliant signing.

Lacazette would be my preference over Icardi, and that has got some wheels too...

But remember, this is all just gossip... Until the jersey photo shoot is done or Ornstein tweets it, stay calm folks!

I don't know much about the foreign strikers but we won't win anything with the mis-firing Walcott, Welbeck or Ox as replacements for Giroud when he's injured or going through a bad spell. We need someone a lot better than them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,828 ✭✭✭gosplan

I don't really mind and can't particularly pretend to know which is better between Icardi, Lacazette and Mahrez.

The only reason I go for Mahrez is because I think we might still sign a CF if we get him.

That's true, but completely missing the point I was making.

    This is so true.

Plus if Giroud got injured after the window closed, top 4 would even be a stretch.

For that reason plus the fact that Wenger was willing to spend 20+ million on Vardy, a player with no resale value, plus the fact that Ozil, Sanchez and Kos will definitely go if we don't show some ambition, I've no doubt Wenger will sign a decent option up front.

Re Mahrez, reports in France suggest that he won't sign a new contract with Leicester and that his main concern is playing style.

I wonder who has a distinct playing style that would suit eh :P

Wenger keeps mentioning last week of window

We will prob have to wait until then to see who we get

I think the most obvious thing is we're in for Mahrez but he's waiting to see if a better offer comes along.

Interesting. Lyon sure do love talking publicly about transfers

Good stuff- essentially it's down to how much Wenger wants Lacazette. He will leave Lyon if we're prepared to pay enough.

Mahrez and Gomes aren't remotely similar?

Would he go to Barca to sit on the bench though behind Suarez Neymar and messi though ?

Leicester sign a new winger, maybe it'll happen......

Ah, thought he was a winger. In any case, I remember seeing El Mundo Deportivo recently suggest Barcelona are done once they pick up a sub striker. Haven't seen Mahrez heavily linked in any Spanish papers at all this summer.

So how we would we like to see us line out before liverpool? Expecting Ozil, Sanchez, Cazorla, Mert all out, and no new transfers (so hopefully this will be obsolete by next week!) Id say

    Giroud (Hopefully back to Work)

    Iwobi - Ramsey - Ox

    Wilshere - Xhaka

    Monreal - Kos - Gabriel - Bellerin

    cech

Think it'll be Walcott up top unfortunately. Isn't Cazorla back? He'll definitely be starting if so. Wilshere is out for a week apparently, which means he's out until about November at the earliest knowing our luck so I doubt we'll see him against Pool

Edit: just saw Cazorla is out, bollocks.

Sanchez was on the bench the other night too. He's probably fit to play.

Akpom up front please, he might lack PL experience but at least he's scoring goals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,326 ✭✭✭batistuta9

    cech
    bellerin kos gab monreal
    ramsey xhaka
    ox iwobi campbell
    sanchez

  • Registered Users Posts: 305 ✭✭Ajfunky

Yeah if Giroud and Sanchez are out i'd lob Akpom up front. I just don't want to see Walcott near the team, even agains twhat will probably be a fairly weak defense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,603 ✭✭✭smilerf

Elneny will definitely start before Jack.
Hope Akpom starts ahead of Theo

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,307 ✭✭✭DarraghF197

    Akpom
    Ramsey Cazorla/Wilshere Oxlade Chamberlain
    Xhaka Coquelin
    Monreal Gabriel Koscielny Bellerin
    Cech
Hopefully one of Cazorla or Wilshere would be fit - maybe they could rotate at half time. The season hasn't even started and the squad looks stretched. I'd nearly fancy Akpom over Walcott to be honest. Didn't realise so much of our key players are out. First game looks a lot harder than it originally did.

Wenger said Ramsey and Sanchez back for next pre-season game.

Judging from that timeline, Ozil, Giroud and Kos should be back for opener. If not though, and assuming Wilshire and Caz out (worst case)

    Cech
    Bellerin - Gabriel - Chambers - Monreal
    Xhaka - Rambo
    Sanchez - Iwobi - Ox
    Walcott

I think out best team for the season, not including anyone coming in is probably...

    Xhaka - Rambo
    Sanchez - Ozil - Caz
    Giroud

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,791 ✭✭✭✭AdamD

Cazorla's the slowest player in the team he can't play on the wing

No. He's been centre mid only for quiet some time now

    For me its

    Xhaka - Cazorla
    Ox- Ozil - Sanchez
    Giroud

But I hope we can add Mahrez to replace Ox

But he was 2 years out wide first. Only played center mid in his third season.

Edit: just checked it and he played a fair bit more on the wing. Scored nearly all his goals there too.

Oh ye of little faith. We'll probably line up like this against the Mugsmashers:
    Cech

    Harry Bell Mustafi Gabriel Monreal

    Xhaka Elneny

    Mahrez Ozil Sanchez

    Lacazette

It's going to be very interesting to see what Wenger does with his 'best starting 11'.

For me, you'd assume that Ozil, Sanchez, Ramsey, Xhaka and Giroud/World Class Striker are definite starters. That leaves one place for new winger/Ox/Theo/Caz/Wilshere. That's not even taking into account Coq and Elneny.

I'm sure injuries will help him decide in the end.

Why would you think he would drop cazorla who was our best player last season until his injury and when the wheels came off our title challenge?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,756 ✭✭✭emergingstar

    Cech
    Bellerin. Gab. Chambers. Monreal
    Xhaka. Elneny
    Ox. Ramsey. Sanchez
    Akpom

I reckon we will start like that against Liverpool

I really don't think Caz was our best player, but that's a matter of opinion.

My point is that he misses out purely based on who I think is definitely in his best starting 11. Caz causes a bit of a conundrum, because when you play in his position, you need to be contributing goals. I don't think he got a single goal last season.

He was our best player he kept our midfield flowing. When he got injured it fell apart.

As you said matter of opinion.
