The new season kicked off last night - still not a patch on Big Brother US, but it seems a hell of a lot better than previous seasons.
Seems to have a bigger budget than last year, looks and feels slicker, and has grown up a little bit. Also the housemates, on first impressions, seem a lot less annoying than the last few seasons.

Seemed like more of the same sub-par BB Canada to me.

As ever, it's already littered with twists with two pretty big ones getting dropped on opening night. Casting seems a little too on the nose too with plenty of replicas of previous contestants. Not sure if I can put up with a full season of gambling references as they got old after about 5 minutes.

And I know I could not put up with a full season of Nicki Graham.

Saw the first episode a few weeks ago and hated it. I disliked it so much that I didn't watch any more. I didn't get a good first impression of the housemates and the hotel/casino theme grated.

This morning I threw it on in the background while working and it really grew on me. Despite being an attention seeking muppet, Nikki is hilarious. She freaks out at the weirdest things and cries at the drop of a hat (which makes for great TV).

Tim is a scream too. I never saw his series of BB in Australia, but I can see why the Aussie public took him to the end - he is very likeable and will go far (unless backdoored).

Joel is probably the most interesting of the Canadians. A bit of an underdog against the alpha males, but could go far in the right alliance.

It has the potential to be a good season, but nobody is standing out as being a strong player (apart from Tim) - they are all playing it too safe.

Yeah, I think Tim is great and I really like Joel also. You're right about Nikki, she's annoying as hell, but really entertaining at the same time - and I think that she suits BB Canada better than she ever did BB UK.

I don't rate a lot of the other players, but I do like that they're all at least trying to play the game and the alliances seem to want to go after each other. So far, it has been more enjoyable than the previous Canada seasons (which I know isn't saying much), but it'll keep me going until Big Brother US returns in June.

I've never watched any of the Aussie seasons, are they any good? Or is essentially the same as The UK version, where there's zero strategy involved?

Yeah the Aussie one is like the UK format (audience voting), but it's slicker and not as tacky as the UK version. Much higher production values. The Aussies are really good at reality TV. They took a break last year, and I'm not sure if it's on this year either. Worth checking out if it pops up though....

What season was Tim on it? If I can track down the episodes, it'd be one I'd go back and watch.

Excellent. Just started watching that Season - already love it. The Aussie's do seem to do Reality TV very well. Their Amazing Race is very good, as was Beauty and the Geek Australia (not sure if it's officially ended or if it'll be back at some stage) and their version of The Biggest Loser is quite good as well.

Their Masterchef is the best of all of Masterchefs (including UK, USA, South Africa, Ireland and New Zealand). Starts in May.

If you're looking for a new Aussie reality show to watch, try My Kitchen Rules - season 7 started a few weeks ago and it's bloody brilliant.

I may try them at some stage, but I've never watched any of those cooking shows - except the odd episode of Come Dine With Me used to be on in the staff room during my lunch break sometimes, but I've never seen Bake Off or Masterchef or anything. Maybe it's time I gave some of them a shot though.

I've grown fond of the season too.

Interesting vote this week. Did Tim think he had the deciding vote? Seemed like a strange one considering how close he was with Cassandra. Joel looks to be playing the middle very well which could see him go far.

Looks like floating will be a legitimate strategy for this season. It's got a bad reputation but playing the middle can be a safe option to reach the end game.

Thought she`d be a nightmare at the start but I'm rooting for her now.

Love Tim's HoH - making them all nominate each other just like the Aussie BB was a great move. It'll probably come back to haunt him next week, but I was actually surprised at how pissed some people were at his decision to do it democratically like that. Especially for those who haven't had a chance to be in a position of power.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,373 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised he wanted to be HoH to begin with. He was floating by nicely in the middle but now everybody has reason to be a little pissed off with him.

I thought the house would have manipulated the situation in a better way in order to put 2 big players (Dallas, the brothers, Jared) up against each other but they kind of used it as a legit means of venting and bitching which give Tim lots of info but it also paints a bit of a target on his back.

I'm totally converted! I really thought Cassandra would be a useless Victoria knock off but she actually is playing a great game.

I was surprised she wasn't in the top 2 for HOH vote.

Not 100% sure why the brothers were top 2 either but I'm only following episodes so there must be more on the feeds I'm missing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,512 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

It has been a pretty decent season so far. Nothing stellar, but very enjoyable. It would be less entertaining without Tim and Nikki.

Rooting for Cassandra too, she has really grown on me.

Impossible to pick a front runner, nobody is standing out. They will all end up picking each other off depending on who has power - it really could go in any direction.

The one thing that still annoys me Arisa's phony enthusiasm.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

It's still watchable, but definitely if Tim and Nikki weren't in there it would be a really poor season. None of the other personalities are big enough to keep it entertaining. I like the Joel-Tim-Cassandra alliance and would like to see them go to the end. They're doing a good job at manipulating the game.

Im loving this season, I've watched the previous ones in bits and pieces but never really got that into but Im hooked on this one, I think its just watching Nikki again, and I love Tim. The international housemates make this season...

I can't stand the brothers anymore... they're so stupid...

While I am really enjoying this season, without Nikki and Tim it would've been an awful season. I mean Cassandra is great, but without Tim to bounce off, she would've been wasted. Going by past seasons and this current season cast, I just don't think the Canadian version is particularly entertaining, so unless they do more international players next season, I think this may be the last Big Brother Canada I'll watch. Not a patch on the US one, even though the format is essentially the same.

Cass better get a bit of luck in the next few comps resulting in her hopefully winning this.

I'd like to see Cass win it, with Tim as the runner up, but if it means the brothers don't win it, I'd be fine with Kelsey taking the title if it comes down to them.

Cassandra needs to win now after surviving last week

Won't be watching BBCAN again. That final was cringeworthy. Felt like most jury members would have been more than happy to spoil their vote.

Kind of bad form from Tim to notgive his spot in the final three to Cass to then just quit in the HOH comp because he hadn't studied. He should have known at that stage that he either needed to be in a position where either of the other two would want to take him to the final or he needed to know his stuff. I think Cass was fuming for most the finale.

Yeah, that finale was complete cack. The Jury questions were all pretty much the same and the answers were terrible. How Kelsey didn't win against those eejits is beyond me and I was fuming as much as Cassandra was that she wasn't in it. Cassandra, Tim, Joel and Nikki made this season watchable, but it's becoming glaringly obvious four seasons in, that the Canadian Big Brother just isn't up to par. I had been hoping it might just take a couple of seasons to find it's feet, but I'll probably just stick to the US version going forward.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,512 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

I had a few episodes on the back burner because I had gotten bored with it. Flicked through them this morning just to see who won. I didn't really like the brothers at the start and that didn't change by the end. Out of the final 4, I would have preferred Tim or Cassandra to win it.

Tim is a muppet for forfeiting that comp but to be fair, he wouldn't have had a chance in the last one (also a history comp).

Ah well. I could say now that I won't watch next year, but who am I kidding? :)

I've watched a couple of seasons of the US BB and I didn't enjoy them at all; I didn't give a crap who won and I couldn't even tell you any of their names.

I was wary of the Canada version because of this, but I really liked it. Maybe the people are just more likeable (except the idiots who won!) - but maybe it was just Tim and Nicki who carried it. I was raging Cass didn't at least get a shot at the final.

I'm going to go back and watch S3; hoping to enjoy it as much.
