Forgot to post this up. Absolute bargain at £15.95 with free shipping to UK (use Parcel Motel). Already used this kit and it's an absolute doddle.

Last time I worked on the suspension of an e39 it had a MacPherson strut setup!

Aye, E39 has McPherson struts at the front. Both in the normal and V8 chassis

No, BMW e46 pushing towards 200k miles
My mother had a 06 megane that had the poorly designed window regulators and in the 9 years she owned it, the only thing that broke was a window regulator.

Ah Upper/Lower, whichever way they are :p Should keep her happy anyway, tyres to get next after I see what I can fit when the rear coils are installed.

I have an obsession with clean looking cars, i don't like badges, big spoilers, chrone plastic, stickers etc.

Of course if the car was a Subaru or GTR then spoilers etc are fine :)

But for me the plastic chrome makes it look tacky.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,361 ✭✭✭Boskowski

After 18 years the headlights just look horrendous, really takes away from the overall clean look of the car.. So today I bought sheets of sandpaper, 2000 & 3000 grit, some rubbing compound and buffing attachments for the battery drill. 20 quid for the lot and I gonna restore them to their former beauty on Saturday or so.

Not quite alone! I've said it a couple of times in the past too. The 2 kidney grills on a BMW are their defining design feature and I think it looks way better to have them stand out as the manufacturer intended.

    You're not alone :)

Every BMW I've had has had their defining chrome grilles left alone, from the lowly 318is to the 535i and everything in between.

Know theres a difference in the E39 V8 grilles and regular grilles? I'd like to show you a pic but every other hoohaa has it blacked out  If I'm arsed I'll get a pic of my one up later to show the difference. Imagine throwing away that subtle hint :( I don't see the point of say having a black 4 door E46 330d se and blacking out the grilles... Not on my watch!

The only time I've blacked out a grille is on my Merc (similar to this W140), but I left the chrome surround alone. Gives it a more outdated/agri look. But it only works on a car that's been lowered, otherwise it's fairly silly... Otherwise I leave the badges and grilles alone as they left the factory

All subjective to me and my own views. If you don't like them, tough sh*t

Chrome all the way for me too. Not sure how accurate this but I've been told that in the E** generation, the chrome grilles signify 6+ cylinders.

Not a bad little addition IMO.

Not sure about the mk2 but with the rear on the mk1 only the genuine Ford one will fit, due to the curvature of the window.

The old wiperblade was a Bosch and looks exactly the same as the Ford one :) This is possibly the first non-OEM part I've found on the car so far though :p

I've not got any photos but been busy purchasing:

4 new tyres, still waiting - hopefully have them tomorrow for immediate fitting & 'testing'

    Tax :(

Tar remover, fallout remover, super resin polish, clay bar, collinite 845, a drying towel. Few spray bottles, rags cloths etc.

Toying with the idea of a DA but we'll see.

Gearbox & diff oils, engine oil & filters etc.

Not sure what's next on the list, either I start upgrading stuff or start replacing parts that don't really need replacing :pac:

A citroen c3 wiper arm can take it's place with a 13mm spanner. That's what I did and it looks better being a smooth wiper arm.

4 new Pirellis, onto my borrowed set of wheels. Much needed tyres made a big difference :)

I may also invest in a new breaker bar that I jeep in the car, I muled the head clean off my one opening bolts :D

Be careful on the Pirellis!! Lots of chinese stuff will out perform them in the wet!!

Never found them a good tyre in the wet but really good in the dry and with excellent steering feel and progressive handling.

Knew there was something different about your back wiper. Looks well.

Meh, the mods have finished, as far as I'm concerned. The clear side repeaters have gone a tad yellow, lost their crisp clear colour, can't get to the inner side to give them a rub of toothpaste or the likes... they'll do!

I changed my oil with some 5w30 FS mobil1, fixed an exhaust hanger bracket that broke off with some metal putty (temp fix will need welding), the bushing for the exhaust need replacing, they are very soft.

I also gapped my spark plugs, and I have a throttle body gasket for when I get around to cleaning it. This was done as the car has developed a hard start recently, but it has improved a lot since cleaning and gapping the plugs.

Thanks to some badminton match on today which left me with clear roads, I can confirm that the Merc held on very well onto the rainy roads all over pissy wet Meath

Only time will tell when they wear down how well they will perform then. The vredesteins performed very well in the wet up to circa 2mm of thread

Test drove an E92 during the week and decided I didn't want to spend quite that much money at the moment so may scratch this itch by ordering this later today to replace the current one which has given up after 4 years. Any thoughts or better recommendations?

It looks cheap and nasty to me. I'd be worried about battery drain issues or even more worrying, it going on fire.
