I've tried looking online for an answer to this but is proving difficult.

I'm applying for a DBA role in my current job. Vast majority of our clients use SQL Server 2008r2, the other minority being SQL Server 2012. So I primarily work with 2008r2.

I see that there are 2 routes to go down:

    --SQL Server 2008 Course/Exam--
2778 Writing Queries Using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Transact-SQL
    6231 Maintaining a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Database
    6232 Implementing a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Database

    --SQL Server 2012 Course/Exam--
    20461 Querying Microsoft SQL Server
20462 Administering Microsoft SQL Server Databases
20463 Implementing a Data Warehouse with Microsoft SQL Server

Which course am I best off doing?

SQL Server 2008 makes sense as we deal mainly with it. But, long term 2012 will be better as it's future proof and people could upgrade.

Would the 2012 Course/Exam cover most of what's involved in 2008?

I could do 2008 Course/Exam and then do the Upgrade to 2012 exam (457 and 458) - but - how much knowledge will I need to make this transition? Can't find any transition courses around.

    Thanks!

I thought that you could do 2008 and upgrade throught a path.
20462 Administering Microsoft SQL Server Databases
20463 Implementing a Data Warehouse with Microsoft SQL Server

Most 2008 exams have been retired - 2008R2 may be the start of what I'd consider the current generation (proper 64 bit support, modern reporting services etc) but it is rather old.

Some of them were still available in March and gone now. If there's any left I'd still go straight for 2012.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yeah, I noticed that. I'm going with "20461 Querying Microsoft SQL Server 2012/4" and "Administering Microsoft® SQL Server 2012/4 Databases", especially as they cater for 2012 and 2014 versions.

Can someone recommend me the best training company to choose from? I'm stuck between New Horizons, SureSkills and GlobalKnowledge. My preference is to have a classroom and lecturer based - i.e. the lecturer going everything first, then we work on it on the labs.
