Why did ichthyosaurs go extinct?

Ichthyosaurs were always hardy creatures. They gave birth to vigorous live young, and may have been warm-blooded. Undoubtedly they were exceptionally sturdy, well-diversifed creatures, and I think that...in spite of the fact that brusque climatic changes might have had something to do with it...the main cause of their extinction is still to be sought.

There WAS a degree of positive evolution among the various species of ichthyosaurs; at any rate, I see no obvious reason why they should have evolved further to any great extent, considering their apparent resilience and adaptability.

Perhaps we should look for the reason for their extinction more in predator competition, increasing sexual sterility or epidemics. Or a type of contamination in the seas which would have affected them particularly.
