Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't know whether to be delighted or devastated at the winner of the terrier group :o
She's a little cracker. I think she'll give them a run for their money for Best in Show :)
The Border was to die for too :o

Will they actually do anything though? Remember a few years back when they had certain breeds that were excluded if a vet deemed them too extreme - bulldogs, basset hounds, clumber spaniels - not a word of it for the past couple of years. Does that mean it worked? Or have they just forgotten about it.

I thought she meant the whole breed and all Kc competitions, not just specific dogs being withdrawn from crufts, maybe I got that wrong?

I don't know if they are doing the vet check thing this year. I haven't heard anything about it.

Awww that whippet would melt your heart.

Bless the owner, never won a first before now best in group in Crufts :)

    And only 19

Just go in from dinner to see the hound group judging, did I miss the helper dog of the year award and the Mary Ray display?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,340 ✭✭✭borderlinemeath

So the judge is a collie specialist, is it fair to assume the Border Collie is going to win?

Ah I'd hope they have no bias, I think that whippet is a stunning looking dog.

Delighted for the Westie owner, but not for the breed.

Reserve to that beautiful whippet :)

Wife called it. 1 & 2. Poor Westie is tired.

    :(

I'll just sit here now and wait for the newbie threads asking where they can get a cheap westie.

    *May be a slight exaggeration

Delighted that such a lovely dog won, but like you stheno, crestfallen for the breed :(

Bailey's expression when that Pekinese was on the screen - like he couldn't decide if it was a dog or not and whether he should bark at it lol! :pac:

Yeah, they already suffer unmercifully at the hands of puppy farmers, and with the health problems that the more poorly bred westies have, it's not great.

    Beautiful little dog though

Westies would be a puppy farmers favourite, plus badly bred Westies can suffer from severe health problems, particularly skin issues.

People will see this win, and decide they want a westie, go for one on the cheap and then dump them or fail to treat any health issues that arise.

Big fan of border collies here, and loved that collie. Delighted for the Westie though, very charismatic little dog. Whippet was a great choice also. I had a feeling that the winner would come from the last three.

Eric (the Pekinese) is such a little furry butterball, reminded me of tribbles from Star Trek

I wanted the peke to win. Only people who havn't room for a monkey would get them :p

The breed has been utterly destroyed by back yard breeders and puppy farmers in the past 20 years. So much so that I'd bet they're gone beyond the point of no return... In Ireland at least, but I suspect it's a global problem.
It's very, very hard to buy a westie in Ireland that will not suffer with one of the major health problems that afflict the breed at some point in its life, and/or exhibit behavioural problems. Always known as a long-lived breed, you're doing seriously well to get them to 12-13 now. When I was a kid, you'd reasonably expect your westie to reach and exceed 15, with dogs of 17-18 commonplace.

It's amazing how people can change and manipulate how different breeds look over time.

I'm just happy "toadline" bullies aren't a recognized breed.

    What are toadline bullies?

Is it a variety of EBT? I love them, think they look fierce stupid but having fostered a couple, they were fab fab dogs.

:( These poor dogs. They're being bred as a fancy 'type' of bully breed in the US by some pretty extreme backyard breeders. Some of the most appalling breeding to change the appearance of a dog I have ever seen

Just googled that as I'd never heard of it...

    Christ :(

    WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE???

Why do they want to breed these things? Soon (arguably already in existence with some breeds...) they will have this:

They're bulldogs bred to look like toads in stance. For the sake of your sanity and blood pressure do not Google them.

I'm just home from Crufts. The Border Terrier was indeed to die for. Absolutely fab. I was sad to learn that the beautiful Westie got BIS. I dread the consequences for the breed.

Had a fantastic time but glad to be home.

I went to Crufts on Friday, to help out with the Canicross demo, so I made it to the main arena, who'd have thunk it. They had clubs from all over the UK, to promote the sport, and I'd asked if I could also be part of it, as we'd like the sports to grow here in Ireland. I ended up leading them in, in my nice green t-shirt :) If anyone is slightly interested, its on Day 2 of the live feed on YouTube, starting at 2:25.

I was only marshalling, but was given a dog pass, I contempleted taking Ghost in, a husky/retriever cross who is a complete lunatic, would have been fun to see what he would have done in there, but instead I took Vincent. He had a great day, starting off with the bus from the car park, then we just wandered around, and he got loads of attention and hugs. He is a broken husky, he has a woolly coat, only one ear, and the tip of his nose is missing, but everyone loved him. As I was also given a collecting ring pass (the area just behind the main arena) I felt we had to do this, definitely something to treasure.

I am not into showing dogs, I have a lot of friends who are, and they enjoy it, so I'm not anti-showing, but would rather be out and about working the dogs. There was a long distance trek in England on Saturday and Sunday organised by the Alaskan Malamute Working Association, very few teams there on the Saturday as most of their members were showing at Crufts that day, but lots of dogs took part on the Sunday that had spent Saturday in the show ring. Exactly what it should be all about, dogs that are fit for function, so hopefully changes will continue to be made by the Kennel Club, maybe they will up their game after this year's controversy and dogs that are fit, healthy and able to fulfill their working purpose will do well in shows.

Saw a picture of an alsatian that looked like it had been hit by a car... it was best in breed in this garbage. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at crufts :/

What a brilliant photo. A real keepsake.

I'd tend to agree. Breeding for some distorted idea of form rather than for the health of the individual pup is reprehensible. The GSD (German Shepherd) was walking so appallingly that nobody, let alone an expert, should have given it a prize. The poor thing was a mess.

I'm not anti-showing either. What I love to see in the show-ring is a healthy, happy dog that has a great relationship with the handler. The KC needs a right royal kick in the arse for allowing some of these poor animals to represent 'breeds'.
