Benitez would be a sensational appointment. Probably one of the best ever that a struggling Premier League side has made. That said, I'd be surprised with him (or any manager worth his salt) taking the job the way the club is run at the moment. You'd never know though, maybe Ashley has had his eureka moment.

They'll be fine this season anyway. They've easily got enough to stay up ahead of Sunderland and and Norwich.

Shocked that Rafa is even considering this job tbh!

Ashley must have promised him a lifetime supply of those massive Sports Direct mugs.

Shocked that Rafa is even considering this job tbh!

Fact of the matter is he wants to manage in the premier league more than anything. He said in an interview 3 weeks ago that his wife wants him to stay in England and manage an English team.

Out of the big English teams who are available?

    Man city? Guardiola.
    Liverpool? Klopp.
    Arsenal? Wenger.
    Man utd? Mourinho.
    Chelsea? Conte.

He doesn't want to wait around for a team that may never ask him to be manager. Newcastle are one of the biggest clubs in the EPL.. With one of the largest stadiums.

Sure, we have been mismanaged. But the reports say that he has been given the go ahead to be full manager to be in charge of football matters and transfers on and off the pitch.

Also, in the interview he said he follows all the teams in the EPL in detail, just in case. He has to know that we have a good team, and with the right manager we can get results.

Also, look at out fixtures. Out of the bottom 4 we have by far the best chance to survive.

So.. To sum up, he can take control of a sleeping giant, become a hero, work a 30 minute flight from his family, get paid buckets of cash and potentially raise one of England's sleeping giants back to the top half of the table.

Question is, why wouldn't he take the job?

I take your point but I'm surprised he didnt wait to see if they stayed up first!

He can keep us up sure. And if not he goes to Valencia with no damage to his rep.

    Rafa too good for them.

Moyes would be a solid appointment imo

Rafa is a class act, a cultured European manager, no business going there.

Rafa managing Newcastle in the championship?

Also from Madrid to Newcastle fighting reegation? Must be the biggest fall in such short time.

True, I'm really going to miss his after match interviews. He was the comical Ali of the soccer world.

    .

They could re-appoint Joe Kinnear and probably stay up this year.

Their remaining games are about as easy as could realistically be asked for and all they need is to be tightened up defensively considering that they have some very good ammunition at the other end of the pitch.

There's absolutely no chance they'll go down under a manager like Benitez.

If Arsenal fail to win the league this season, I think Wenger may move on. Arsenal and Rafa would be an excellent match. Newcastle would be an awful move for him.

Wow Paully thought Evertonians were pessimistic - every year you predict Sunderland for the drop - as a neutral its a straight shoot-out between Sunderland and Newcastle - one year I suppose you will be right ;)

Don't rule out Crystal Palace, they have a tough run for the next month or so and they haven't won a league game since before Christmas.

Rafa would be mad to go there, Valencia in a couple of months would suit him far better.

The one factor in Newcastle's favor though is just being in England. You'd have to imagine he'd like to work near his family again. Even then though, you'd imagine he can bide his time and wait for a less...turbulent job to open up.

Youre joking, right? How are they one of the biggest Clubs?

They last won a trophy 61 years ago!

They havent finshed top 4 in 13 years.

Theyre season average finish is beyond a midtable team.

Cant see why Rafa would touch the job. Poison of a club.

Well this is what happens when you use vague terms like "big club". by some criteria, they arent. By others, they most certainly are.
    Trophies? Not a big club.
    Wages spent? Big club.
Transfer fees? Not a big club.
Stadium and fan base? Big club.

Newcastle are a "bigger" club than almost any other team outside the top 8 of the league. The fact that they are consistently crap doesnt help matters but lots of "big" clubs have that problem.

    And?

We are in the top 20 richest clubs in Europe. Only a handful of stadiums around Europe bring in more fans then we do week after week.

We are ****e yes, but the potential is there. Ashley has taken the cheap option on managers his entire time here. Someone like Rafa is just what we need. If someone can get us playing, we can get out of this mess.

No reason we shouldnt be competing with the likes of Southampton, Everton and West Ham. We're aren't deluded idiots who think we should be top 4 every season. That's preposterous. But the likes of Everton, Swansea, Stoke etc turning us over easily everytime is ridiculous. It shouldn't be happening. We should at least be COMPETITIVE against the likes of those clubs. If Leicester can do it, why can't anyone else?

I think it could be great move - despite what some say here Newcastle are a big team - they probably helped create the Premiership into the cash cow that it is - they were rocking in the mid 90's with Shearer and Keegan - if he keeps Newcastle up he will be deemed a hero , Ashley is releasing cash , so everything else will be a bonus, and he can prove himself as a manager - thats what make managers managing small or troubled clubs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,740 ✭✭✭✭MD1990

Don't think its that bad of a move as I'm sure Benitez will have control over transfers. If he can keep them up the club does have decent potential.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,337 ✭✭✭✭monkey9

I'd certainly consider Newcastle to be one of the biggest clubs in England. Considering the fallout Rafa has had with club owners in the past, I think he's mad to take this job right now.

But if Rafa was to get it right at Newcastle, it'd be a great club to be at. Hope he does well there if he gets the job.

If he has full control over all footballing matters, it could be a good move for Rafa and the club. If he's under the same restrictions as every other Newcastle manager, it's doomed to fail.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 40,061 ✭✭✭✭Harry Palmr

Shouldn't they have waited until after the game? Presumably Ashley has his man...

If the club are looking to be ambitious then now is the time to break every shackle that's been placed on the club and try a new approach.

If Ashley wants to stick to his speech about "making our own luck" then this is the only way he can go about things. It's not every day a manager of this calibre comes knocking so they have to do this right.

Outside of United, Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool there aren't many other clubs I'd rather manage than Newcastle. The potential is amazing, IF you have full control over things and are allowed compete financially.

    GET IN MY SON!

    Things to note:

In my opinion there is no way Rafa would sign up for more of the same. This is a rebuild job with funds available to do just that

Amazing signing for Newcastle, better than anyone could have expected. For once credit to the club for pulling this off!

He's taking over straight away (not chickening out of next game away to Leicester)

Job title is Manager, not head coach. Critical change of approach there

He will have the full support of the club, and the fans

    Bloody hell.

Who'd have thought that when he was appointed at Real Madrid last summer.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster. He won't last a year and I'm surprised at Rafa taking the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,358 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

One thing is for sure, it is the absolute best appointment available to Newcastle, and they pulled it off.

    An amazing coup.

It's no secret that Rafa wanted to manage in England again, as his family love the country, but Newcastle still had to sell the 'project'.

What I will say is, he will endear himself to the fans. Ignore Real Madrid fans, and ignore Chelsea fans. When he goes into a club, he buys into the culture of the club as much as he can. He won't be perfect, and you'll get frustrated with him, but he'll root out the chancers, and turn the team into an effective unit, if given the time to do it.

He's not a miracle worker, but he'll get the basics right, and Newcastle, before long, should be harder to beat than they have been in 10 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,710 ✭✭✭✭Paully D

The best appointment a lower Premier League team has made in Premier League history.

    Sensational appointment.

If he is left to his own devices, it's a game changer for the club.

It'll be ironic that Newcastle change their manager just before the derby and win it considering Sunderland have done it every year for the last 4. :pac:

Would have been a great appointment at the start of the season not sure if he can turn them around in short amount of games left after the damage mcleaen and the board have done.
