Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Pet Gate for Small Pup

    Hi,

I recently got a Bichon frise. He's settling into his new home quite well. Sleeps in his crate at night, without a whimper.

When I leave the house for a few hours, he is content in his crate.

I'd like to give him a bit more space when he is on his own for longer periods, but not the run of the whole house, just one room.

I'm looking for a door gate that he can see out of. Not having much luck, can anyone offer any suggestions please?

A baby gate? I got one quite cheaply in Argos when trying to introduce two cats.

Depends on his size. I would generally recommend a standard baby gate, even a cat won't get through the bars on that, but a small pup will. Something like this has no bars, but I would be concerned that the pup might get stuck trying to squeeze around the edges while you're out.

And ultimately they're probably going to scratch and bite at whatever barrier you put in the way, so a cloth barrier will fail eventually. If the bars on a standard baby gate are too wide to contain him, you'll probably just have to wait until he's a little older.

We have an wooden Ikea one that has two pieces to fit wider openings (Argos etc will have similar ones).. You could maybe offset the second piece to make the gaps between the bars smaller? I also have a pop-up/fordable barrier that hasn't been ripped yet but don't know if it'd survive a pup lol! :phttp://www.boots.ie/en/Lindam-Flexiguard-Travel-Baby-Gate_26906/ - I got it for €25 in Tesco a couple of years ago ;)

Good idea to let your puppy have more space, but still keep him restricted/safe!

Have a look in your local charity shop, or donedeal or adverts.ie - I got a STOVE GUARD - i.e. a guard to keep children away from stoves! - and took the panels apart to use it in various places to restrict my dog when he had a cruciate replacement. Worked great. Since then, Ive used a charity shop stair/baby gate (€5), to which I attached some chicken wire. Or of course you can buy new :D

Looking at the ikea one again the bars are quite close together - I don't think a pup would fit through them. (you can get that family card thing at the top of the escalator and get the discount ;) )

    Thank you very much Intheclouds,

I ended up buying this very same one with an extension in Argos.

Before that I was going to buy a pet gate at twice the price in Petmania.

So now my pup has a bit more space and I don't have to worry about couch being eaten.

You saved me a good few quid there with your suggestion much appreciated.
